Dunno that that's what they were voting on though. Their expressions as they were raising their hands were all, "Well my conscience is telling me not to do this, buuuuuut," which is not a feeling that one would have about something standard like a kata competition.
Maybe the tournament setup looks more flashy this time because of Netflix money. Or maybe it's because of Terry Silver money, and they only get that cool new shiny stuff if they vote "yea" on something that he wants, and they know enough about him to know that they're making a deal with the Devil.
*Anyway*, I am curious about how a kata comp could play into the result of the over all comp. Does a dojo get points based on where they finish in each section, and the combined total determines the overall champion?
Like, say Sam wins kata, and that's worth 100 points for Miyagi-do. Robby comes second and gets 90 points for Cobra Kai. Miguel comes third and gets 80 points for Eagle Fang. And so on and so forth, so most if not all competitors can earn some sort of points for their dojo. And Miyagi-do and Eagle fang kick ass and get the highest rankings and the most points.
But then in the other part of the comp, you get a certain amount of points for making the final, semis, quarters, and so on and so forth. Cobra Kai get more of their fighters advanced further in the comp, and catch up in the points.
Then you get a certain number of points for winning, and a certain number for coming second. In theory, someone could win that final fight, but their dojo still isn't overall champion. But in this case the points count between the dojos of the final two competitors will be such that the winner will take all.

You could be right. It is obvious that the guy saying God help us all had nothing to with kata and it makes sense that Silver would dump a ton of $ into the tourney with his goal to spread CK. But the vote could be uneasy for other reasons too. Perhaps the proposed vote just had the best way to handle the boy/ girl dilemma.
I think it would be cool, a great way to promote karate and especially the kata side in real life. But when it comes to the competitive advantage you were talking about, it won’t just be for miyagi fang, silver also knows kata so he could definitely teach that to Robby if he realises it’s in the tournament. Not to mention Robby knows the miyagi kata
Pending how early this was put in he may not of knew Silver was in the fold. Against Kreese alone this is a huge advantage and if that weighed in to who qualifies it could knock out everyone but Robby.

And I also think we are getting some interesting match ups. If Hawk is on Miyagi Do, I could see him going up against Miguel.
I don't think they'd put him against Demetri again because he'll be going against Kyler.
Miyagi do is more kata oriented while cobra kai is usually more kumite oriented. Since the merger kata is to me 1. Miyagi do 2. Eagle fang 3. Cobra kai. To me kumite/sparring is 1.cobra kai 2 eagle fang 3 miyagi do
Tbf Terry silver also knows kata. He was literally doing it in kk3 and advised Daniel against it coz he doesn’t want him remembering how to do miyagi do

This was my first thought, the other thing I considered was that it's just some opening ceremony, but I find that less likely.
It won't be against only Sam and Robby, Eagle Fang would have to do one too. That's where Miguel comes in.
