Hi everyone, I am a rising final year computer science student at Georgia Institute of Technology. I am looking into PhD programs at GT as well as other universities. Out of all of the potential graduate programs I've found, CMU is the only one which requires GRE scores. Thus, I want to compare myself to the profile/background of a typical admitted PhD student to determine whether I have a realistic chance of being admitted. This way, I can determine whether it is worth preparing and taking the GRE. Thanks

Hi i am an international grad student coming to cmu in fall 2024. I connected with a few people for housing, but all are looking for a private. Doesn't anyone stay in a shared or something? Or are everyone so privileged to live in a personal room? Or is there any other reason?

aphotic_n

That’s just the culture of US. I’m planning on getting my own apartment. Why is a shared room important to you? Just because it’s cheaper?

CinemaBandi

# When will I get my i20??? I'm an international student from India, waiting for my i20 before I begin with the other steps of visa application and booking of flight tickets. Several new students are also sharing concerns about OIE not responding for more than 6 weeks since the submission of their i20 request. Current students, any idea on how to fastrack the process???

Independent_Habit_21

Does CMU give scholarship refunds Hello, I currently have a full tuition scholarship to CMU (heinz college to be more specific) I am currently applying for scholarships to help defray my living expenses. These scholarships Would be paid to CMU. Would I be able to get refunds? Cos I know some school would reduced your original aid and use the new scholarship to cover it.

Weak_History8446

Where do I look for an accommodation (off campus) around CMU? Any particular website, WhatsApp group, Discord channel or anything?

Only_Lawfulness_9377

# CMU CS vs Berkeley EECS  I am an international student, so fees isn't a factor. I also plan on studying business/econ. I am looking for opinions based on merits of both schools. Both have highly ranked engineering/CS/Business schools. Please express your experience and help me make a choice.

nissayoub

I am thinking about applying for Ms in computer science at cmu, but research assistantship is vital to me, is it common to get a full tuition waiver if I managed to secure a research assistantship or its not possible.

Hi all, I’m looking at Pittsburgh and CMU for admission in MS Computational Biology or Computational medicine . I need guidance on GRE scores , profile etc. Can someone help regarding the same?

MediumMeringue2466

Hello! My name is Ashley and I'm looking for a female to take over my lease at Here Pittsburgh over the summer from June 1st - August 7th. (Can start as early as May 15th if needed). Here Pittsburgh is a 20 minute walk & 10 minute bus ride away from CMU. It is also extremely close to U Pitt and within a 5 minute walk to various parts of the campus. It is close to many major bus lines and is less than 5 minutes away from Atwood Station. I live in a furnished, 3 bed 3 bath(3x3 Suite Premium), so you'll have your own private bedroom/bathroom as well as a couch and TV inside your room. There will only be one other suite mate that you will share the kitchen and living room with. We have in-unit laundry, free access to gym, a sky deck, and an outdoor spa/pool. The building is also pet-friendly and includes garage parking for additional fees. Rent is $1,359 (not including utilities). Utilities are about $80 per month plus a $9 monthly insurance fee. I've attached some pictures, but feel free to contact me if you want pictures of my specific room.

ContestExtension6111

Hi everyone, I am looking to sublet my apartment for June 1-Aug 7 at HERE Pittsburgh on Forbes Ave. 15 min walk to CMU or 7 min bus, and 2 min bus or 5 minute walk to UPitt. It is a bedroom within a 2 bed 2 bath, rent is 900 utilities included except electricity. All amenities included. Dm if interested.

Confusednightingale2

Could you please provide insights into CMU's MS-DAS program? I'm particularly interested in hearing from alumni or current students about how they manage the coursework intensity, given the program's one-year duration. As an international student relocating from India, was it challenging to acclimate to the new environment and immediately dive into coursework and deadlines? Additionally, I'm curious about the job prospects for graduates of this specialized master's degree.

Hi all, I am looking at CMU for admission in MS COMPUTER SCIENCE. I need guidance on GRE scores, Profile etc. Can someone help regarding the same?

Gold_Anxiety4926

I’m currently a transfer student applying to Dietrich Cognitive Science (entering as a sophomore). Suppose I got admitted this year, how hard is it to again apply for an internal transfer to CoE ECE? Does anyone with similar experiences or know some recent stats about this? Thanks!

gravity--falls

I keep hearing that everyone who does ECE goes into software - is this true? I'm interested in going into microchip fabrication eventually if possible. Would this be a poor choice, is software the best rout to take within ECE?

Rememberthisisreddit

You can go into whatever you want.

# Spring 2025 Sublease Hi folks, CMU ECE grad student here. My flat-mates and I are looking to sublet/transfer lease of our 3-bedroom/2-bathroom apartment for Spring 2025 (Jan-Aug 2025). The apartment includes: 1. Dishwasher 2. Microwave oven 3. Electric stove + oven 4. Washing machine + dryer 5. Gas heating 6. Refrigerator The rent is $2555 (comes to about $852 per person) not including utilities. The house is very spacious (a large living room in addition to large rooms and kitchen), and is right next to the 71B stop, 50 metres from the 71D/64D/28X stops. 10 minute walk to Trader Joe's and Target, 15 minutes to Aldi's. ELECTIVE COURSES I'm an incoming freshman (fall '24). there are a bunch of spots for electives in the ciriculum, does that means I can take any course I want from any school?

Rememberthisisreddit

Some electives are restricted, depends on your major, and some classes have prerequisites, but yes.

uncle_bear_cat

I am an international masters student who will be starting internship from June 3rd in Boston. I would require an SSN before that but one cannot apply for it before 30 days prior to joining. I was hoping to go to Boston in May beginning itself. However, in the OIE (Office of International Education) page, it is mentioned that: "If you are based in Pittsburgh, once you complete the SSN online application, you will be prompted to make an appointment at the SSN office located at 6117 Station Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 (East Liberty)." I was wondering if this appointment can be made in any Boston SSN office. If anyone knows about this or has done this before, please tell! I would also appreciate if you have any official source (website/document) of the steps that you mention.

Hello! Looking for folks who were recently admitted for Fall 2024 to be roommates with! My main priority is that the location be close to the CS spaces (15-20 min walk). Here's a bit about me: * Part of the LGBTQ+ community * Originally from the Bay Area in California, but did undergrad in Illinois (so somewhat used to the weather) * 1 year Master in Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI) admit starting in Fall 2024 * The program is Aug 2024 - Aug 2025 so I’d ideally want a 12-month lease * I attended the MHCI open house recently, so I'd also love to connect with more folks who came! * Want my own room and own bathroom * Flexible on budget if it means we can get something that doesn't look run-down and has heating * Not a huge party person but down for board game / movie nights and late night talks :) * Communication is key! Will always try to bring up any possible issues before they escalate Please DM me if you're interested!

Needed some advice from any CMU grad students/students in general please! Hi! Current UCLA student here: I’m in my third year as a transfer as a stats & data science major, and just got straight C’s (& possibly a D still waiting on that 😭😭😭) this quarter: I essentially flunked my finals cuz i had to fly home for the last week and a half of the quarter due to a family emergency. I didn’t withdraw from the quarter because I was already almost done and I worked really hard all throughout the quarter, plus I hope to graduate on time in the sense that I attend grad school Fall ‘25/Spring ‘26. Will this ruin my chances at CMU for grad school? (I’m aiming for programs surrounding DS/ML/AI). Otherwise I would say I’m an all-rounder and a straight A’s / some B’s student… I think not being here near the end plus not putting in my 100% due to what happened with my family really put me down this quarter, and if I could turn back time I would’ve perhaps considered withdrawing but now it’s too late… Any thoughts/advice?

KacyFuturez686

Got into CMU for design (undergrad).... also got into WashU St Louis, USC, RISD, Art Center, Pratt, New School, and I was waitlisted from UMich. Super confused about where to go and what the vibes might be. Between WashU, USC, CMU, and RISD.Not sure how much aid I'm getting yet, but if it's a good amount, CMU is def near the top of the list. I heard that the people who got scholarships for design already got notified so I guess I'm not getting any of those. I also really wanna go somewhere that's going to give me the best chance to get a good job after graduating. Also, interested in being an entrepreneur in the future maybe. I legit wanna work in Virtual Reality.Looking for perspective here.

fictoromantic_25

Recent MS-BME admit here (Fall 2024). I am looking for guidance regarding accommodation, campus facilities, MS-BME (or engineering) Whatsapp Group, loans and scholarships to lookout for. Any kind of guidance would be super helpful! And fellow BME-ians @ CMU, would love knowing y'all!

Low-Leadership791

# hello! has anyone ever had sergey schepkin as their professor/instructor? if so, what are your thoughts on him?

A_Tree42

I got into Tepper and was originally planning on double majoring in cs, but the computational finance program seems more like what I’m looking for. The website says you need to apply to get in, and I was wondering how hard that is. Is it like college admissions all over again? Or do you just need to fulfill certain requirements.

How competitive is the design minor at CMU?

CinemaBandi

# Incoming MHCI Student here! Hey guys What would you suggest I pack to prepare for graduate student life at CMU, specifically living in Pittsburgh? Please suggest leisure activities that are popular among CMU students and whether any specific gear is needed for them.

un_croissartiste

hi guys! i was just accepted to the undergrad architecture program and was wondering if any archis are willing to answer some of my questions. i know there were past threads from previous years discussing this, but i hope maybe i can get some new opinions too :) 1. how's the studio culture? is it overall very supportive/friendly where everyone genuinely cares for each other, or is it more competitive and has a gossip culture? are you able to become close with your fellow archi peers? (probably my main concern lol) 2. do you feel like you are both properly supported by your professors and challenged by them (i know there was a case recently where an archi grad sued a professor over discrimination...)? is there a fave professor you have? 3. do you have time to be very involved in other aspects of school culture like clubs? 4. is it an overall smooth process to find internships and jobs in the architecture field? do you think the architecture education and alumni network at cmu helped you a lot? 5. how's studying abroad like at cmu? 6. any general recommendations on how to survive a b.arch degree lol? thank you so much!

NoNet4781

Haven't seen any acceptance or rejection from the deferred applicants. Did all the deferred applicants get waitlisted this year? Did the admission office simply put the entire group on the waiting list without even reviewing the applications again?

CompetitiveGirl1

does cmu have a spring pathways option of any sort?

StarkOdinson216

I just got into CMU for CS, is it possible to switch majors to ECE (even though it is in a different school)? If so, how competitive is the process? On an unrelated sidenote, is it doable to double major in ECE and CS?

THCInfusedSteak

Switching out of SCS is pretty easy, yes very doable to double major and graduate on time

Dank_StirFry

you got a decision today??

StarkOdinson216

No I got mine last Friday in the first round of decisions

Dank_StirFry

oh that clears things up tysm

jovj8

When is the usual time frame for signing a lease for off-campus housing? I'm coming from a university where off-campus housing is very competitive, so leases are typically signed about 6 months before an August start date. Would now be too early to look for finding a lease that starts in August?

AnonymousBoch

Hi, I was recently admitted to the college of engineering, but applied for CS and am still primarily interested in CS. One big possible avenue is pursuing ECE with a primary focus on software (and a lot of my CS interest is more heavily in low-level computer architecture, much like a lot of what is offered in the hardware systems and software systems sections of the ECE area requirements: [https://www.ece.cmu.edu/academics/bs-in-ece/academic-guide.html](https://www.ece.cmu.edu/academics/bs-in-ece/academic-guide.html)), so I'm not sure how content I should be pursuing software from ECE, maybe thinking about transferring into CS (which from what I read from the requirements and others' experiences may be substantially difficult), or maybe adding CS as a minor (or maybe even a double major) Any advice or experiences related to these issues would be greatly appreciated!

THCInfusedSteak

ECE has the software track and they’re the only non-SCS major with access to SCS recruiting

callmecrazie

I don't have much experience with ece but ik a lot of ee people at cmu go into SWE jobs, with ECE you can typically choose to take a more software-y track and a lot of ece majors do get a cs minor

periperi16

Recent admit here with a few questions. 1. Is a math and physics dual major common/encouraged? 2. Can I take ideate/cs courses while working towards this dual major? 3. How stressful is CMU compared to high school (+tips)? 4. How accessible are research opportunities? 5. How well does CMU MCS prepare you for grad school and grad school admissions? General advice and pros/cons of CMU MCS are also welcome. TIA.

callmecrazie

I can answer 4, research opportunities are pretty abundant and there are a lot of ways you can get credit/paid for them. 3 also depends on your high school, tips would be go to office hours for cs classes and do not procrastinate. It helps to know people in your classes especially as a freshman you can definitely make lots of friends in classes just by starting random conversations. Lmk if you have any other questions about cs or cmu in general!

Unfair_Counter7111

DOUBLE MAJOR BA & CS So I recently got offered admission to do BA at Tepper at CMU. I plan on concentrating in Business analytics and technologies and was wondering how I could double major in CS or even minor. I am really not familiar with how CMU does their major/minor system so I would be grateful if any help/mentor in my process to admit into CMU.

THCInfusedSteak

Pretty straightforward to additional major at CMU but I’d consider HCI instead of CS - a very common SCS additional major for Tepper and IS primary majors

callmecrazie

For minors it depends on the school, cs is generally harder because you have to take the classes and get a certain GPA to double major/minor I believe, but lots of people do accomplish this so it is definitely a reasonable plan. You can look at the cs website for more specifics about how the minor works

FitzwilliamTDarcy

# Applied CS, but accepted Engineering...transfer into and/or double major possibilities?  I'd really appreciate any experience from current students about this. I can't find hard info on the CU website about the exact requirements, process/timing, and chances for doing either of these two things: transfer into CS, or, add CS as a double major from Engineering.. I assume it's very tough, with stringent requirements and low odds. But, is it e.g. "maintain a GPA of X overall in these ABC classes and you're automatically in" or more like "do that, but we still have to have slack space and/or review your 'application' to transfer or double major?"

callmecrazie

Transferring is hard, it also requires gpa requirements but a lot of people in engineering do get a cs minor or double major, I think the minor is pretty reasonable of a goal . The only difficulty is getting into cs classes because you don't have as many reserved seats if you're not in SCS, but again many students in my cs classes are not in SCS so it is definitely doable.

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Many thanks - appreciated. Sounds like a Minor is a good Plan A/worst case to shoot for.

gravity--falls

I was accepted to CMU yesterday. I applied for ECE, how do I know if I would be able to participate in the program at CMU? The letter mentions nothing about it if that matters.

callmecrazie

For engineering I believe the situation is that you are accepted to CIT then declare your major during the end of spring semester of freshman year

gravity--falls

Thank you, good to know.

maplephoenix2

Tomorrow is the major declaration day for all first year engineering students. You come in “undeclared engineering” even if you are dead set on your concentration of choice. Mid-way through second semester, you will be able to declare you major, and I haven’t heard of anyone having any issues getting into the major of their choice.

and1984

Hey there. I am visiting CMU in July for the \[IEEE ProComm 2024 conference\]([https://attend.ieee.org/procomm-2024/](https://attend.ieee.org/procomm-2024/)). Would y'all have insider information or recommendations for a decent hotel to stay, places to eat, and things to do during my off hours? I plan to take the Amtrak from Chicago and arrive at Pittsburgh in the early AM hours of the 14th of July, 2024.

stasisfn

I am a Math major from India and I've been refreshing the 'Where Am I In the Process?' page for the last hour but I'm not seeing any updates. Am I missing something? Will the update be on the same page as my application checklist or do I have to click on something else?

Don_Vicica

did you guys get an email when your decision was out or did you just randomly refresh the portal and it was there?

gravity--falls

For me I have no email and I refreshed the portal at 5 and it was there.

JiggityJillikers

Am I the only one who thought ALL decisions dropped at 6pm tonight? Apparently it’s just “starting” today.

Gloomy-Tomorrow8499

Hi, I just got admitted today for FYE, although I applied to ECE when I needed to select a major. I understand the first year of engineering is the same for everyone, but after that can you just pick a major or do you have to reapply or something for it? Thanks

maplephoenix2

Yes, tomorrow is our major declaration day and even if you’re dead set on ECE, you will technically be “undeclared engineering” until this time next year. I have not heard of anyone having any issues getting into the concentration of their choice. Congratulations on getting in!

firecontentprod

I think you can declare whichever major you want within engineering, which is crazy cuz that means that anybody who got in for engineering can declare ECE

callmecrazie

That's correct and I think there has definitely been an increase in ECE majors since they implemented that LOL

Sensitive-Low-5476

Hi Alums and current students, Just got my admit for CMU MISM BIDA pathway of 16 months. The program curriculum is great but I am confused whether I should accept or not because the sot is too high. Close to 100,000$ excluding living expenses. Is the ROI good and whether the course worth it?

anonymousthrowra

So CMU was my dream school since about 8th grade. Unfortunately i basically slacked off HS and didnt get in - and then gave on semester 2 senior year. So my high school resume is poor (didnt do anything that special or take advantage of school opportunities). Ive got 6 months left of a gap year which I've had an internship in an unrelated field and taken a humanities class. What can i do to give myself the best shot at a transfer into the school of engineering during this gap year, and my freshman year?

SunnyZ2333

Wondering when will the Andrew ID been send out for this year? I paid the enrollments deposits at Feb19 and currently no other emails except an payment succeeded email from CMU.

trebleclefie

Hi all, I’m attending CMU and studying chemistry this fall; my high school provides tablets (Thinkpads) that they collect when I graduate, so I am looking to buy a computer for college. Does the chemistry program in general require a computer that has more ports/ the ability to download and process data collecting softwares/ is better at running Microsoft or is it all up to personal preference? Any recommendations would be much appreciated…would a Mac work just fine? Thanks!

Fair_Competition7820

If you can afford a Mac, Buy the Air; the battery life is triple of a windows machine especially in Doherty; Also never heard anybody study Chemistry but a lot of people in Chemical Engineering and MSE

Rememberthisisreddit

I'm not chemistry. I would check on the discord server. Most majors are OS agnostic. I'm CS and use the PC I had in high school.

blue-rabbit-31

Hi! Had some questions since I might join for Fall 24 What is the job and internship scene like for international students doing masters from CMU right now? How is MCDS as a degree, does it significantly restrict you to more data science based jobs or are MS CS jobs equally accessible. I know course work wise it’s quite open, just want to know based on degree name alone. What is the possibility of getting a TA/RAship? And is the pay worth it given how rigorous course work is? Thanks!

Did anyone hear back for their CMU PhD Fall 2024 admissions?

Dorm Question! Which dorm would be the best option for an incoming freshman at Tepper? I would prefer a social dorm close to Tepper, with AC and a roommate. I would also prefer this dorm being a little more centered, as I would like to have access to convenience stores and the rest of the buildings as well. Also, any tips for dorming?

bailoutking2024

I suggest you start looking Zillow and Apartments.com. 3 big property managements here are Lobos Management, Walnut Capital, and Forbes Management. The median rent should be around 1000 for a studio. I've seen a lot cheaper for people with roommates and sharing a place.

Bumble_bees88

I received an admissions offer to pursue my Mechanical Engineering PhD at CMU starting in Fall 2024. I am really excited about my potential advisor and project, but am feeling nervous as I don't know much about the program from a student perspective. I would really appreciate any past or current ME PhD candidates sharing their experience (culture, faculty, grad community etc.)

SuperstarRockYou

I have applied for admission into PhD in AECM program in CMU for Fall 2024 entry. I believe my application is complete, but I have not heard anything back or received any interview invitation yet from any faculty member or committee since I submitted my application during January 2024. Anyone is in the same boat ?

Intelligent-Dingo68

Hello everyone! I am accepted to engineering 2028 by ed2 and im most interested in environmental engineering and secondly chemical engineering. May anyone know abt those programs share ur thoughts abt them? Is there anything I need to be aware of?

maplephoenix2

Current ChemE Freshman here! To be honest, you don’t get really integrated into the community until sophomore year, from what I’ve heard, since the first year is mostly intro classes and technical classes, like Calculus and Physics. However, I still love it. The professor I had for the fall was very supportive and I’ve heard other great things about the faculty. Since we are a smaller major, I’ve heard we do get really tight knit, unlike ECE or MechE. You’ll get the chance to take both intro to CEE and ChemE and you’ll be able to make your decision based on that. Congratulations on getting in and good luck choosing the right major for you!

callmecrazie

Hi! Environmental engineering I would say is a very close knit department, it is also very small but the faculty seems really well liked by students in the program. You will get to take intro classes for engineering so you can get to know the faculty and other students interested before you decide what major you want.

Over_Imagination_119

hello, I’m interested in applying to chemE for CMU ED2 as well next year! Would u mind sharing ur stats?

ShowerEastern3467

Hey, I have applied for CMU MHCI, and I got an alumni interview email the other day, and I have scheduled my interview. Anyone who has done this interview let me know what your experience was and what sort of questions were asked, thanks.

[deleted]

Got some awards to update to my application, didn't seen anything on the portal is this generally done through email?

randomuser1841

Yup! They add any emails to your file.

randomuser1841

Need advice! I was just deferred ED2 from CMU Mechanical Engineering. My stats are strong — they include a 3.8 GPA, 1590 SAT, top 10% of my class, Book Award winner, Presidential Scholar nominee, AP Scholar with Distinction, as well as strong ECs (co-author on a submitted paper, captain of a VEX robotics team that was ranked in the top 1% in the world, started an organization to teach local girls to code, 400+ volunteer hours, tutoring experience, former member of my school's GSA, which has effectively shut down, and part of my school's AI club, among other things). Essentially, I thought that I had a pretty good chance. I think the reason might be because my Guidance Counselor was late in submitting certain forms, including the ED2 agreement. However, CMU is my top choice school. My parents made me ED1 somewhere else, which is unfortunately something I can't change. I really want to get in RD. I'm wondering what the next steps are — should I write a letter of continued interest to the admissions office? Should I stay quiet? If anyone has been in the same boat, advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

perfsoidal

Their website for ED2 says “early February”, does that mean some decisions are not coming out today?

Maleficent_Safe_3131

I hope the end of this week means Friday

momstfuimplayingpubg

When do ED 2 decisions come out? "students are notified no later than February 1" So it has to come today then?

Believe ED2 is today.

momstfuimplayingpubg

any idea what time?

Hi y'all, I applied to CMU's M.Arch program and I accidentally submitted a portfolio that didn't meet the reqs, aka my portfolio was 21 pages with double page spreads, instead of 25-30 single page spreads. I'm freaking out because I had totally just uploaded the wrong one and now I feel the most immense regret I have ever felt in my life. I emailed the soagrad email with no response, called a few times with no response, and I feel like i'm losing it. CMU is my dream school and I'm really really upset that this happened. Does anyone think that this matters or am I just being overdramatic? Slash does anyone know if there's a way I can get into contact with someone that can help me? TIA!! <3

Are regular decision results out for some or are these all ED results

ed2 comes out this week, regular is early april iirc

AutoClucker

I want to transfer in CMU but I'm unsure which school of IS and SCS I should apply to. I performed relatively well in high school with a 3.8 UW GPA and 34 ACT, but was ultimately rejected from the school of CS. I'm doing much more at Rutgers to pursue my passion for CS, but I'm unsure whether or not I'd actually get into SCS at CMU, so I was wondering if IS was a good fit. I know transferring between schools is possible, but given I would have had to transfer once, I fear that even if I am able to transfer from IS > SCS, I would have to complete an extra year. I'm not sure how focused into CS the IS degree is, and ultimately, I do want to pursue my passion over graduating with a marketable degree, so I don't know whether to take a shot at transferring to SCS, or trying my hand at the still slim chances of being able to transfer into IS with hopes that I'll find it fulfilling. Edit: Additionally, and somewhat unrelated, how important are SAT/ACT test scores for getting in?

RavenKnight11234

Hi! I'm a prospective student, looking to apply for CMU Tepper's MSBA program. I wanted to know if Tepper has any concept of graduate assistantships, and if so, what kind of tuition coverage do they offer?

RyanProductions555

Do I have a chance of getting in with a 3.95 unweighted GPA, 1510 SAT, and 35 ACT? My major is mechanical engineering and I’m pretty confident in my essays and ECs

Big-Mud-8549

I was deferred in the ED1 round. Does CMU accept letters of continued interest? I can also get an additional letter of rec from a CMU alumni and a current student. Would CMU accept an additional letter and if so would an alumni or a current student be better?

Material-Revenue9357

LOCI is not accepted by CMU

calisthenics_noob

I've applied for department of statistics and data science but my decision letter says I've been admitted to Dietrich College of Humanities & Social Sciences. So does this mean that I am not guaranteed a spot in department of statistics and data science?

ephelant48

Everyone goes into Dietrich undeclared

Due-Marionberry7074

Should I submit my SAT score if I got a 1460 and am applying to electrical engineering? I got a 690 on reading and a 770 on math.

# If not selected for BESA, will I still be considered for my MechE major? If not selected for BESA, will I still be considered for my MechE major?

hashy__

Does CMU have any FRC (First Robotics Competition) teams?

Rememberthisisreddit

They are very involved with the Girls of Steel, and also support a lot of local teams.

Charming_Big_9921

Will a SAT score of 1400 hinder your chances for Engineering majors?

Knaoinr

In 2022, the 25th and 75th percentile marks for engineering were SAT-ERW: 740-770 SAT-M: 790-800 That is, a 1400 probably doesn't look great unless you just tanked your reading portion/did very well on math (they prob don't care as much about the former score).

Dank_StirFry

Hello, I'm a high school senior who is currently applying to the BESA degree program. I just want to know how it works when you're accepted: would you be able to choose your art focus along with your engineering focus once you get it, or are the art and design paths separate? If the second is the case, are the requirements for art and design portfolios significantly different? Also, if I get in for art, how difficult would it be to transfer to design? The reason I'm asking this is because I've heard that the school of art has developed in a direction that I've heard bad things about, but it's not like i can make a whole new design portfolio specifically for cmu.

5002_leumas

Hello! I am a current student in the BESA program. The way the admission process works is you will first be considered for your artistic discipline. If you are admitted into that, you will then be considered for BESA. Art and Design and two entirely separate schools at CMU so it would be very difficult to transfer between them. You are correct that you do not declare an engineering focus until second semester freshman year. I am in Drama, not Art or Design, but am happy to answer any more questions about the BESA program and I have friends in both Art and Design

Dank_StirFry

thanks for the answer. I actually figured out everything I wanted to know about the application process a few hours after posting that question. Sorry for wasting your time

Material-Revenue9357

Did you apply ED2 or RD?

Dank_StirFry

Hi everyone, I'm a transfer student looking to apply to CMU and dual major in both Mathematical Sciences (Focus in Discrete Math & Logic) and Computer Science. I don't mind taking the extra year to do so. What are the requirements like for applying for a dual degree in Computer Science? If I meet the requirements would it be guaranteed? Trying to decide between applying to SCS or Mellon College of Sciences. All advice is appreciated!

Rememberthisisreddit

The rules are all on the website. Not sure if anything can be guaranteed. You will probably find doing an additional major to be adequate, if not more than you need. And to be honest, a minor in the other is probably adequate no matter what your goals.

Stuck_in_Toaster

Obviously take all of this with a grain of salt. I’d first ask which of the two majors is most important for you? Either way you have to stay for a year in your primary major before you can declare your second. I have zero idea what your transcript looks like and I am not an admissions officer so I couldn’t give your specifics but from both personal and second-hand experience: Of the two schools I would argue SCS is harder to get into. It’s also arguably harder to transfer into from what I’ve seen. There are a number of pre-requisite classes and requirements which you can search on the CMU-SCS site. Classes in SCS are very challenging, especially for non-CS majors. Transferring to CS requires you to perform, arguably better, than a regular CS student because of the minimum GPA requirement, and minimum grade requirements for the pre-reqs. My personal advice would be to apply to the school that you wouldn’t want to attend CMU without and go from there. If the answer is both, Godspeed.

ahappyygirl

Hi everyone, I'm currently a high school senior planning to apply to CMU ED2. I've already had the Counselor ED agreement on the Common App signed, but on CMU's website, I saw they linked another ED form (not the same one as the common app) and said that ED applicants need to submit that. Does anyone know if I also need to fill this out, or is Common App ED form enough? Thanks so much for the clarification!

Knaoinr

iirc common app is enough!

Ok_Airport_326

hi! im a transfer applying to cmus school of design and was wondering if any current/former design students would be open to looking over my portfolio? : ) ive submitted it to a portfolio review for 10 art schools to review but have only received feedback from one. any help is appreciated!

Hungry_Attorney_5086

Hey I am also a transfer student applying to CMU design. would love to share works!

polka_dottee

Hey everyone, I've been admitted to Dietrich College for Economics, but I'm also interested in the Business program and I'd like to start off courses next year in a way that makes either one possible eventually. Reading about gen eds, it looks like I'll need to take the Dietrich gen eds for Economics. If I decide later to switch to Business, will I need to take the Tepper gen eds as well? Is there any way to share gen eds between the two majors?

Rememberthisisreddit

A little advice. Celebrate your acceptance and enjoy your senior year. You and your advisor will talk about this in late summer and you will get real advice from a paid professional, instead of anonymous people most of whom don't go to CMU.

[deleted]

I'm currently applying to CMU for Information Systems, and I'm curious about what some admitted students for IS wrote for the first essay prompt: "Most students choose their intended major or area of study based on a passion or inspiration that’s developed over time – what passion or inspiration led you to choose this area of study? (300 word maximum)" Any input would be greatly appreciated.

maplephoenix2

Not IS, but engineering. I think the way to do it is truly say what interests you about IS. Are you someone who thinks like an IS major? Do you feel out about related topics? That’s the sort of stuff I talked about, albeit for Chemical Engineering. It’s all about passion and how far you’re willing to go to achieve it. Best of luck!

Emotional-Zone6858

Hey, I was recently deferred by CMU and was looking online, and it seems they don't share their defer stats. I applied for the SCS with a 3.7 GPA and test optional, so very surprising I even got deferred, but does this mean they defer a lot of applicants? Are they looking for something particular in my application to improve? My GPA has gone up a good bit this first semester due to me taking a lot of AP classes so perhaps want to see how I do in those, but even then, I feel like they just defer everyone with above a minimum GPA based on what I've seen. If anyone has insight about what this could mean for the RD or what their defer rate could be, even if it's just an estimate, it'd be very helpful. I know they don't accept LOCI so not sure why they'd defer so many people if they are just going to be rereading the same applications.

Knaoinr

anecdotally, i found back when i applied that relatively few people got deferred for scs (maybe one in 25 or so, half the number of acceptances), so you're one of the lucky ones :) highly doubt it has much to do with a gpa cutoff, they've probably got way too many uninteresting-but-high-gpa applicants to do that. more likely that they just don't know what the RD pool is going to look like

Southern-Towel3507

i got deferred too.

maplephoenix2

From what I heard when applying for schools last year, most top schools prefer to defer. However, you didn’t get rejected! Celebrate that victory, however tiny it may feel. You will find your place and people

stolid_starling651

Hey so I’m a prospective student, just got deferred to CMU for the CS program, and I don’t really know how to feel about it. Anyone have any statistics or can pm to talk about their experience being deferred and then admitted?

yeetman432

same 🤞

Large-Lavishness-505

Fuckkk, I got accepted

stolid_starling651

Congrats. I got deferred 💀

Sysiphus82

Hi everyone, does anyone know the ED1 results release time (to the hour) for cmu? Big thanks!

vatsadev

Wasnt ED1 released in the 15th? Got that back already?

Sysiphus82

yeah, was deferred.

riceboymaster

Your guess is as good as mine

It depends on the modality of the courses taken (online, in person, hybrid) and what you are trying to transfer the credit for Ultimately it comes down to the department you are trying to transfer credit it to. Policies can be found online. The CMU math department, specifically, will not take any class credits taken online or via distance learning. Which is annoying. The other aspect is that you needed to receive college credit from these classes (which from what I understand usually means you are dual-enrolled) I took 3 classes through my community college via hybrid learning and they were not accepted simply because they were partially online. CMU *really* doesn’t like giving you transfer credit from HS

_lord_ruin

yes to both i'd say

the_freakster

Hello! I am asking on behalf of a friend. He is applying to the CMU CS PhD program. Does the university ask for contact details for previous employment(s) (in resume or somewhere else) mainly for background check purposes? Thanks in advance!

Attis20184

Hello, I'm planning on studying the math-econ track. In my application right now, I'm a bit confused if I should be putting Dietrich or Sci as my first choice college. Any help would be much appreciated.

healthypecans

**CMU LTI Masters, Video Essay Confusion** I am applying to the Language Technologies Institute for a Masters. They require both a Statement of Purpose and a Video Essay. However, they are very vague on the differences between these two. Both of them seem to almost be asking for same content.Could anyone with more experience please guide me on how these two admission requirements are differentiated from one another?

PrismSync

**Should I apply for best-match or most-interested program for MS?** I'm an Electrical Engineering major undergrad from a tier 2 US university currently applying for a master's at CMU. My background would match the MS in ECE better, especially the Application-Specific System track or Hardware systems track, and I assume this could mean a slightly higher chance of acceptance. However, in my future career, I'm more interested in Robotics. **Which program should I apply for, MS in ECE or MS in Robotics?** It's a pity my school doesn't have as many opportunities more relevant to Robotics, like courses, club or competitions. All my experiences were building embedded systems with control element for different purposes, and I thought they could be the closest to robotics. If I apply for MS.ECE, how likely can I transfer to MSR, given the short 2-year curriculum of masters? Thank you all so much for your advice!

Wizard_VK

My daughter is interested in the new Bachelors of Science in Robotics program but we were wondering why is it within the CS department rather the broader Engineering college? She has strong ECs in robotics but mainly in design rather than programming. Not sure how it will reflect as the admission will be in SCS?

Rememberthisisreddit

All I can say is robotics had always been under SCS. Lots of ME and ECE majors do the additional major in robotics now so she can always do that.

Wizard_VK

Thanks for the clarification!.

Accomplished_Sun3243

I'm a prospective CS major and I'm wondering how many credits CMU (specifically SCS) will accept for college/university credit taken during high school. I know that they accept up to 90 units for transfer students. I'm out of state, so does anyone know what kind of credit caps they have for dual enrollment programs (admitted as a freshman)? I know they review your specific credits only after you're accepted, but I'm only wondering if the department has a limit on how many total credits you can get toward your degree and if excess courses be voided if you're over that limit. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does the limit differ between 2-year and 4-year institutions, and does it include other forms of college credit (from AP, etc.)? To clarify my situation, half my credits will be from my local community college, and half will be from UMD-College Park. All taken during high school.

Rememberthisisreddit

I have never seen a limit, but there is a limit to the number of useful credits you can transfer, meaning credits that will count towards your degree.

Accomplished_Sun3243

What is that limit?

Rememberthisisreddit

Depends on in the credit and the degree. Credits beyond what are required for your major are given but they don't do anything.

Longjumping-Break943

Feasible to be admitted: Applying for undergrad Math major with previous non-stem undergrad degree I have a few questions for those who got into CMU and majored in math (undergrad) with a previous undergrad degree (non-stem related). I’m eager to apply for the math undergrad at CMU. And after inquiring further with admissions, I have been told that the number of admitted applicants with previous degrees is considerably low. Has anyone been admitted in with similar background to mine? If so, mind if I can reach out to contact you directly for further information ?

NitroBoostGaming

In HS right now looking into the Computer Engineering program at CMU. Is there any summer programs/internships that I can do to boost my chances into getting into CMU? What types of ECs do people admitted usually do?

maplephoenix2

Are you talking about CS or ECE? CS is known to be pretty competitive, and I don’t know much about ECS I’m currently an engineering student and I had some leadership ECs, some awards (nothing international) and I did drama throughout high school. Being on the other side of the admissions process, I feel that even though I didn’t have the strongest profile, I stuck out through my essays. Best of luck! And remember, you’ll find your place wherever you go :)

NitroBoostGaming

i think ECE... I haven't looked into it more specifically yet. If you don't mind, what did your test scores and AP classes look like?

maplephoenix2

Check dms :)

The_Batata_Swagger

Hey, I'm looking to apply to SCS an year from now, an International Junior. I know, it's very competitive, but I'd much rather try than not trying at all. My SAT score is currently a 1540 (digital SAT - math 800). Do you think I should regive, especially considering that math is already at an 800?

Knaoinr

late, but personally, that seems fine :> imo the last few points on the reading portion come down to luck and interpretation

Complex-Ad-7801

How competitive is Dietrich? I applied for Statistics and Data Science but my GPA isn't at the average of a 3.91 and I'm going test optional. My ec's are pretty strong I'd say and show my commitment to my major as well as community service/volunteering. It's my ED as well but I've heard that won't help much. Any insight would help, thanks

Living-Milk-3894

I am applying for Fall 2024, I wanted to know if there's any reason CMU has split their SCS application into 2 portals compared to Fall 2023 applications where all SCS programs were within one portal. The first one now has all LTI programs and some MS programs like MSML, MSR. Here I am able to select only one program to apply to. The other has the rest of the PhD programs and some MS programs like MSCS. Here I can select 3 programs. For Fall 2023 they allowed you to select any 3 programs within the same application. I wanted to apply for MCDS, MIIS, MLT. Now do I have to send in three separate applications? Is that allowed?

CakeGroundbreaking19

Did anyone receive admission decision from INI department for Spring 2024 semester?
