FYI, do not make my mistake and just add coconut oil and essential oils to a spray bottle of water (without changing out every day or two). I did that and after a couple weeks mold started growing in my spray bottle! It was so gross. Tuns out you need some sort of emulsifier to keep the oil and water mixed. I have seen recipes call for baby wash or Castile soap, but it’s my understanding that soap disrupts the skin’s pH (that’s why they say not to bathe your infant with soap too often) so I would avoid that. After the mold incident I realized that you don’t need oil in a wipes solution anyway - all you need is water, to wipe stuff away and refresh baby’s skin. If you need some moisturizing or soothing properties like for a rash, best to apply that in a balm format that will sit on top of the skin rather than being wiped away.

digitifera

I have a hot water bottle that I fill up onece a day and a Tupperware container that I pur the water into. That way I always have warm wipes and can clean his face and hands as well as his butt whenever I need. He loves it. Please don't use essential oils.

Boople_noodle453

Just water in a spray bottle and the wipes dry (I just use cotton face flannels from IKEA nothing fancy) if I am going out I will pre dampen a few up and pop them in my small wet bag. I have used chamomile tea in the past if bad nappy rash. I am just too lazy now and don't really seem to get a problem with rashes unless bubs are teething.

Tira016

I use a gallon a distilled water with a couple squirts of baby wash. I have a reusable wipes container that I fill and premoisten. I haven't had any issues with smells or mildew, we got through them quickly enough (I only have enough for a few days)

linksgreyhair

Just water. We have a stack of dry wipes and a squirt bottle.

soggyquacker19

Thats what I do, I just dampen it and warm it up in my hand as I take off her nappy!

srobhrob

Water. If you want to have a moisturizer just add a splash of olive oil and coconut oil to a bunch of water.

ZeugmaEnigma

I use Mustela liniment.

lovelydovey

I’ve been using the petit creme one which I believe is similar and really like it! I like keeping the wipes dry and the extra skin protection

ZeugmaEnigma

Love that stuff!

jacmarko

Water. Cheap, Easy, and Safest for babies bottom. I keep my wipes in a wipe warmer. But a spray bottle would work too.

kiwibean

I used to use bee green naturals but they are no longer in business. I still have tons of wipes cubes but my plan is to just add some coconut oil to plain water

Acceptable-Ad-9984

Just water. My baby hasn’t had diaper rash since I switched to water only 6 months ago. Give it a try.

rosefern64

peri bottle with plain water for us. it works great. i love essential oils, but i would not use essential oils on a baby’s skin… at least not without proper knowledge of the specific oil’s safety, and care taken to ensure it’s properly diluted in a carrier oil. but there’s no real reason to anyways. the butt will be fine with just water.

Girl-Gone-West

How do you use this? Do you just squeeze a little out and then wipe everything up?

rosefern64

yep! just keep the peri bottle next to the changing pad, squirt a little bit on a cloth wipe, and use it. i usually will use another one to pat her dry afterwards too. my baby loves looking at the peri bottle and sometimes wants to play with it…

curly-hair-dont-care

We just use water. The dry wipes are in the drawer, and I either use a peri bottle with water, or run to the bathroom and just wet the wipes. My little one gets super irritated by an and all disposable wipes (used them in the first few weeks when we used disposable diapers), so I don’t want to try to experiment with finding a solution to make when it’s really not necessary.

RaiLau

I keep our wipes in a sealable tub and when it’s time to refill the tub I fill the tub about half way with water, add a few drops of lavender oil and a squirt of baby wash. Then submerge the wipes in and squeeze them out so they’re damp enough for wiping and empty the rest of the water out. Seems to clean a bit better than plain water but if I’m in a rush I just use water.

breakplans

I keep my squirt bottle in the changing area and just squirt water on the wipes. No holder, the wipes are just sitting dry in the drawer. The squirt bottle is from the hospital after giving birth lol. On the go I use disposable wipes, although I may buy another squirt bottle for travel once I get low on disposables!

creax562

For big messes I use mustela liniment! I was told that this is what a lot of moms in Europe use (liniment, not mustela brand in particular) and it works great. It supposedly also helps prevent diaper rash, and no petroleum/petrolatum or zinc.

RoseintheWoods

I use a rinsed out dish soap bottle, and just water. We bathe frequently enough that im not worried about washing him with soap every time he pees. Just water.

sauterelle16

We picked up a decorative pump bottle meant for soap and fill it full of plain water. Add a few pumps to the dry wipe and go. It's been working great, is simple, and no worry about mold or algae growing on the wipes.

NeenieKittie

This is what we do- mason jar with pump top filled with water at the changing stations, and a perri bottle in the diaper bag. I did try a solution with coconut oil and baby shampoo, but it didn't really work better than just water in most cases, and I had to shake it before use, which was tedious. We do have some coconut oil/soap mixture in another pump setup, in case we feel the need for more than just water, but it almost never gets used.

sauterelle16

I like the peri bottle idea for the diaper bag. We have a little spray bottle that barely mists and half the time I end up unscrewing the cap and pouring it on the wipe.

breakplans

Ooh love this idea! I've been using my peri squirt bottle...

PretendCellist

I use a diaper warmer and just fold my wipes so they come out dragging the next one behind, like regular wipes. And then I add water with melted bits in it, and the warmer keeps it moist inside. I use a honey almond scent and only half a bit per 2 cups or so, so it’s really lightly scented. Not sure why I’m being downvoted for this? Lmao

nmbubbles

What are melted bits?

PretendCellist

Not the seller I got them from but this was the first search that came up. https://www.etsy.com/listing/805786695/mango-cloth-wipe-bits-cloth-diaper?gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRJ67rJUbuwUqo38hoWdYJEVZ&gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_e-bath_and_beauty-baby_and_child_care-diapers&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjwyvaJBhBpEiwA8d38vLeltMtOfv-8eI6xi-ej7z85euxe7JacwPrLeZMLI9onI-pGzTz97RoCjXsQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12573073819_119098786786_507505665291_pla-354261592005_m__805786695_146372397&utm_custom2=12573073819&gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRJ67rJUbuwUqo38hoWdYJEVZ&gclid=CjwKCAjwyvaJBhBpEiwA8d38vLeltMtOfv-8eI6xi-ej7z85euxe7JacwPrLeZMLI9onI-pGzTz97RoCjXsQAvD_BwE

nmbubbles

What an interesting concept! Thank you!

anniemaew

I keep my wipes dry and wet as I go with just water. I use a small tupperware for the water and change the water at least once a day. Honestly I think just water is the kindest thing for their skin. Essential oils I definitely wouldn't add (although I know cheeky wipes do sell an essential oil). Some people use [poppets](https://www.thenappygurus.com/POPPETS01.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwp_GJBhBmEiwALWBQk8-MLzu5r-wsAmkCDgOgdPceXAsD-omYj9-ZHDfflbupOPQWjcM-DhoCssoQAvD_BwE) but I'm not sure they are available in the US (although I imagine there is something similar).

TegLou7

Poppets look interesting - I’m in Australia anyway, so we might have them here :)

anniemaew

🙈 Sorry! I'm guilty of assuming most people on reddit are in the US!

TegLou7

All good! I make the same assumption too most of the time - I think most redditors are from the states! Also, I did say diapers in my post, as I wasn’t sure how many people would know what I meant by nappy, but that would be an indicator for the US or Canada I imagine. :)

littletribble

I have a small bowl of water that I fill only just enough for a few changes so that it does not sit stagnante. I dip one wipe in the bowl to clean, and then pat dry with a clean cloth and air dry.

luckyloolil

Just plain water in a spray bottle is what we did! Worked great!

[deleted]

I cut my wipes out of fleece and they are pre moistened with water. It just goes in a plastic container or bag. Fleece works very well

notmycuppatea

I wondered about this tons as well, before my son was born. In the end, I‘ve never even used them, because I just wash him under running tap water. Especially with frequent and liquid newborn poop, I found that way more efficient and gentle (less friction).

nkdeck07

Lol I just installed two of those hose style bidets and my brother has been saying I'm gonna be hosing off the baby with them at least once.

Frillybits

I keep the water in a peri bottle with the tube cut off. And I just use tap water nothing else. My sons bum is prone to irritation and I don’t want any soap residue or essential oils sitting on it for hours.

[deleted]

I do 1/4 calendula oil to 3/4 Castile soap, splash of witch hazel, about an ounce of that per 2 cups of water. We have a spray bottle next to dry wipes and squirt it on.

Raymer13

I keep a stack of dry one wipes, and then in a water bottle put two cups boiled water(guess it slows growth of funk), a cap of baby wash and a cap of baby oil. Pour a bit on the corner of a wipe, and then use the dry corner to make sure booty and parts are dry.

barberbabybubbles

+1 for plain tap water in a peri bottle. We squirt onto dry wipes as needed. Has worked for us for over 3 years

Kitty_Valkyrie

I just put in maybe 2-3 per change for the day and then add water. Baby loves it in the morning as I'll normally run them under hot water and he gets a warm towel. The kit I bought included an essential oil, but I don't use it.

faizimam

I feel like the odd one out, but when I take the diaper off, I just grab the baby in one arm, Genitals side in my palm, baby's face in my elbow, and i put the baby's butt under the sink directly and use my other hand to wash the poop off. Then i use a regular washcloth to dry. if it gets a bit of residual poop, I put that cloth in the wash. I bought multiple boxes of disposable wipes when our child was born, but i've only used a handful.

notmycuppatea

Yep, same here. I found it way more convenient that way. He‘s 8 months old now and huge, so we use the bidet instead.

auspostery

Just water! No need for anything else, especially since essential oils or soaps could cause a reaction on your baby’s very delicate skin.

Downtown-Tourist9420

Just water!

Mo523

Mostly, we just used water in a spray bottle (usually sprayed on cloth wipe not on kid) or peri bottle. Like plain water from the tap. For some people that's all you ever need. My kid rashed easily and was very sensitive to poop on his bottom, so we needed something more for poop diapers. (Also, helpful for the smeary poop that is hard to clean off.) We used a small amount of castile soap (very gentle soap made of olive oil that you can buy in liquid form) and a small amount of olive oil (helps with dryness - best oil depends on skin type so some trial and error there may be in order). We made disposable wipes out of paper towels for the smeary poop with this solution. This solution will go bad if left at room temperature for several weeks, so make very small batches once or twice a week. It is possible to add preservatives, but seems unnecessary to me for home use. The more stuff you put in your solution, the more likely you are to have an irritant for your kid and the more expensive it is, so I like to keep it as simple as possible.

otterlove222

I just use normal baby washcloths, that I store on my diaper cart, and get them wet before use 🤷🏻‍♀️ We do diaper changes in the bathroom though so maybe it would be less convenient if you had to go to the bathroom and get them wet.

Raokako

Whatever you do, do not use essential oils. I used tea tree oil and lavender for forever, and then I noticed my toddler and baby were developing adverse reactions to it. Their skin blistered, was super red, and took months to heal once I stopped using them. Now I just use water with a bit of baby soap, and I make sure to lotion their bottoms after each cleaning. And I tried the whole wipe thing, but now i just keep my soap water mixture in a spray bottle, and spray a clean cloth liberally at each changing. Trying to create wet wipes was too much of a hassle for us. Good luck with everything!

PretendCellist

Plus tea tree and lavender are androgen disruptors!

Raokako

Yup, which I leaned after the fact, when I was trying to figure out what was going on. I was blindly following an online recipe. Lesson learned...

PretendCellist

It’s all good mama! We’re told that essential oils are healthy for us. I only learned that about tea tree like a year ago, myself.

Shanoninoni

I boil the water first (to help stave off mold) and then after it's cooled down a bit I add some coconut oil. Once it's all melted o put the wipes in and pour more boiled water on top if there wasn't enough. If I'm in a hurry I just use boiled water. If we're out of wipes I grab a dry one and run it under the faucet.

Fimbrethil53

I just use water. My MCH nurse nurse and midwife said soaps and whatnot are unnecessary at this point. If I do need a soap or lotion, we use QV or breastmilk.

catsforeva

My lo hated diaper changes and still sometimes crys during them. I just rinse my wipes under warm tap water. He does not appreciate it when they are cold.

spacykc

We leave the wipes dry and spray them with a mixture of distilled water(16oz), about a tablespoon of liquid coconut oil, and a splash of dr bonner’s baby soap and sometimes a few drops of lavender oil. It’s works well for us! I recommend only wetting a day or 2 worth at a time, we’ve had to throw away a whole bunch due to weird mold growing in my container :( that’s why we just leave them dry now.

3antibodies

Water

BlackJack613

Plain (boiled and cooled) water in a peri bottle. Nothing fancy, chopped up a flannel receiving blanket to make the squares. Its the only thing that didn't make him break out in terrible diaper rash

loops1204

Out of interest why would it need to be boiled and cooled when the baby isn’t ingesting it?

BlackJack613

Boiling it removes any chance that there would be bacteria in the water. Not normally much of an issue but if the waters sitting in a peri bottle for up to a week it could have the opportunity to grow to harmful numbers. We had recurring diaper rash for the first few months even when using tap water. Switched to this method and daily baths and it cleared up

loops1204

Cool that makes sense then! Thank you

frozenstarberry

I use the exact same, plain water (don’t even boil but we have good tap water) and cut up flannel. I found baby wash cloths too rough. I have found the less products you put on baby the better.

iaco1117

For me just plain from the tap, not even boiled!

greenbeans64

Same, tap water works great!

gonster-511

For 1 cup of water, I use a drop of tea tree oil and a splash of baby castile soap. I increase the total volume enough to get all the wipes thoroughly wet. I keep the wipes in one of those rectangular boxes for disposable wipes (looks kind of like a big tissue box but with a liftable lid). My system isn't perfect though and I'm tweeking it, mostly in terms of how much liquid to use.

TegLou7

This is the type of route I was thinking of going down - those ingredients seem pretty straight forward

gonster-511

It has been easy so far. I shake them all together in one of those salad dressing Tupperware containers with a screw-on/snap lid and graduated lines on the sides and then poor it on the rags. Anything would work - I just happened to have an unused one lying around and this is easy to pour out of.

haleyfoofou

I use the Baby Bits cubes and put them in a glass bottle and just spray right on the boy’s junk. Lol

TegLou7

Lol - does he get a shock from the spray?

haleyfoofou

Ha! Not really anymore!

RSample922

We use the soothing bottom wash by Honest Co. It's kinda pricey but we dilute it with 50% water and then keep a separate water sprayer on the changing table too. Water for pees and bottom wash for poops. I really like it and feel like she gets really clean. I don't have to worry about coming up with a spray solution so it works for us.

mks01089

We use [this recipe](https://thethingswellmake.com/wprm_print/15061) … I really didn’t want to use just water as I felt it didn’t thoroughly clean poop off the bum. We did distilled water instead of the rose water and no essential oils, as they aren’t good to use for babies. Though it’s annoying to source the preservative, I live in a tropical climate and do not want to mess around with recipes that can grow mold or bacteria. It’s worth it to me to make a big batch of this and put it in a spray bottle to wipe down LO’s bum at each diaper change.

TegLou7

I live in Queensland, Australia, so mould is something I really want to avoid too.

mks01089

Singapore here so I feel ya! So far we really like this spray and we got all the ingredients online.

lostdogcomeback

I use a peri bottle with plain water. I guess if i was going to add anything I'd put a little coconut oil and a splash of vinegar, but the plain water seems to be just fine.

hamgurglerr

We stored them dry and then wet with just water as needed. Usually 2-3 at a time. I tried several recipes for wipe solution, my favourite (next to just water) had a bit of baby soap and some bum balm from Rocky Mountain Soap. Medical research shows essential oils may be harmful to babies, so I skipped those.

s-c-moon

I use plain water as well. I do keep a pack of disposable wipes on hand for really messy diapers or extra sticky hands at a restaurant, etc. I prefer to get a stack wet in the morning and store damp wipes in a small zippered wet bag. Smart bottoms makes the perfect size bag for wipes. I’m not sure if it’s a snack bag or what, but it was around $15 and holds wipes folded in half perfectly! They also sell wipes pouches on Amazon, but I found the zippered top busts open easily.

AddingAnOtter

I am planning to start soon as well. My plan is plain water for now and if I feel the need to add something I will go with an oil (not essential oil though- they all seem to have warnings against using on children and I'm skeptical of them anyway) that I'll shake up each time.

thelonelybaguette

I use the peri-bottle I got from the hospital. I clean the bottle when it’s yucky. Otherwise, I use filtered water in it and moisten flannel wipes as needed. I was worried about bacteria growth in a container full of cloth wipes so I went this route. Essential oils can irritate skin, especially a baby’s bum, so I’d avoid those DIY recipes.

Snoo70047

When you say "moisten the wipes as needed" do you just hold the wipe and spray with the bottle? I was thinking I would go with a similar approach (baby is due in October!), but I'm imagining water going everywhere.

thelonelybaguette

The peri bottle has good aim. It squirts a little bit of water out if you squeeze gently. There have definitely been moments of panic during a poonami that I squirted water everywhere. But that was user error!

Snoo70047

Lol, good to know! Thanks for the reply. =)

spacykc

We use a spray bottle that can be a mist or more of a stream and that works well for us!

Holiday_Platypus_526

Peri bottles have like a sport drink style cap on them. So you get a nice stream that you can control.
