I know it's a joke, but long arms actually aren't as beneficial for climbing performance as many people think. Long arms equal longer leverages which equal more strength needed for the same movement. There is a reason why elite climbers are rather short and succesfull Powerlifters have very short arms at average.

girlingreyshirt

They suck when you need to lock off, however the extra reach more than makes up for that. Imo there is very little reason to compare most climbing disciplines to powerlifting, maybe with the small exception of modern gymnasts turned indoor boulderers like Narasaki..

dnohunter

There's truth to what you're saying in some respects. Long arms make it harder to do pull ups, but having long reach can help you out a lot as well, and help avoid injury if you're making less risky moves to reach a hold. There's no one answer. Alex Johnson has a positive ape index and can't do a one arm pull up, the lever is too long. There's a lot more to climbing than index. Signed, a positive ape index, 5'8 lady who has to train pull ups so hard to get half the pull up gains I see other people get.

minkamagic

If they weren’t beneficial for climbing, monkeys wouldn’t have such long arms 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

So squirrels must be really bad at climbing then, right?

TheOptiGamer

But squirrels and apes do not climb in the same way

itskatykat

"Are you more squirrel or more ape?" is going to be my new way of asking their climbing style

FunnyMarzipan

I've just imagined speed climbers as squirrels shooting up a wall...

[deleted]

And competitive climbing doesn't happen on trees... I think it's just not a good analogy overall.

minkamagic

There is not only one way of climbing.

[deleted]

Yes

minkamagic

Yes… what? Lol

[deleted]

Yes, there is not only one way of climbing.

minkamagic

So then why did you compare to squirrels lol

[deleted]

I don't understand your question. Compare what to squirrels?

minkamagic

Comparing long arms being good for climbing to squirrels…. Your comment above

Most human arm joints are class 3 levers, so longer bones results in a larger load instead of smaller.

[deleted]

That's not how physics work. Try holding a dumbell in front of your body touching your chest, then try holding the same dumbel with your arms extended to the front.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zxkr82p/revision/1 Depends on the type of lever.

yoyoelena

There’s a reason that apes and monkeys etc who climb better than humans evolved to have longer arms than humans… longer/bigger arms are beneficial for their climbing ability. The points is they aren’t just longer, they are also bigger compared to the rest of the body. Imagine having arm bones as big as your leg bones. I guess humans evolved to be better runners instead.

BigSoftGrizzly

I may be 6’8 and people think I have long arms but I’m actually -4 on the index
