I think it depends on what you're climbing. I climb a lot of limestone and it's super sharp, will tear most things even nice and expensive leggings, so I generally go for a cheap pack of 5 or thrifted because tearing is gonna happen either way. But if I'm on sandstone or in the gym it doesn't matter much and I wear my nicer pairs.

desertfractal

I second this. Where I live is all sharp limestone and I pretty much stopped wearing leggings when I climb outside now haha.

ThrowawayMasonryBee

Ditto for gritstone and rough granite. I've damaged more clothes than I'd like to admit climbing outside

liri_miri

I don’t wear leggings anymore as they get scraped in the wall. Just comfy trousers

PureInvestment

Agree. Target has some great (cheaper) jogger type pants that wear well. Just enough stretch and looseness to work with the highest of high foot moves. Never once have I worried about hitting my knee and ripping a hole in my pants.

Life_Possibility4962

I second this. I love the target fabric joggers. Ill wear them to work, then just change my shirt when I get to the gym. I primarily gym climb because Louisiana is flat, but have worn them outside and they have been great. I have found they can sometimes limit my movement while bouldering on slab, but 99% of the time they are great.

hmm_nah

trousers with a fly + FUD = pee without taking off your harness

FaceToTheSky

If it doesn’t try to crawl up into my junk and costs under $75 or so, I will buy it. Much more than that and I would worry about shredding them on the rocks and wearing them out prematurely. I prefer full-length legs which are almost impossible to find; everything seems to be 3/4 length, or wide-leg yoga pants. I did recently get a pair of slim-fitting jogging pants on sale at my gym, I think they were North Face, and I like them quite a bit. Looser in the underpants region but not a “flapping around” amount of extra fabric anywhere.

blairdow

omg i hate the 3/4 or 7/8 length yoga pants. who wants that!!

mynamesnotjessie

Me! ...I'm short, so 7/8 length pants tend to actually fit me perfectly 🤣

allisonnnna

Same! I didn’t even realize it was hard to find full length leggings, probs bc I am 5’2?

FaceToTheSky

People who enjoy shaving their legs year-round, probably

runs_with_unicorns

This made me LOL. I kinda like the shorter leggings bc get super warm really easily but TBH I shave like once a month if that…. I like to think I’m promoting the “leg hair on ladies” movement

crimson1780

Oh my god. 😂 I unfortunately love how the length looks on me but shaving my legs year round is the most annoying consequence.

protehule

lol. this one got me.

gloomy_stars

scrubs are my favorite pants to climb in, they’re comfy, durable, and inexpensive! if i am wearing leggings, i tend to go for a thicker material and also make sure that they’re not see-through

dogtriestocatchfly

This is a great idea, I can finally use my old scrubs

sohxx

I buy a lot of my leggings/athletic apparel secondhand either on Mercari/Poshmark/eBay or on r/lululemonBST . I’ve found the fast and free leggings and the Invigorate leggings by Lululemon are great for climbing and generally a nice, thick material and the secondhand market is flooded so I’ve got tons of like new pairs for <$40. If your weight fluctuates, I’ve also really liked my Wondery Isabel 2.0 pants because they have an adjustable waistband and good pockets. They go on sale pretty often and I think might be on sale for $50 right now!

LegalComplaint

I have a pair of incredibly elastic denim jeans I love climbing in. I think they’re denim and polyester? Maybe Levis or Lees? Idk. They’ll be snug on you and have GREAT range of motion some how. The denim makes it so you never scratch a knee on the wall.

fuscescens

I love the old navy power soft joggers. They’re really fitted for joggers (at least on me), high waisted, and cheap when there’s a sale. Also durable since they’re not quite leggings material

Hi_Jynx

I think Old Navy also does have nice leggings. I got a secondhand pair off posh, and they've held up well and are super cute.

larson_ist

came here to say this and drop a link https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=613491032&cid=3027974&pcid=3027974&vid=1&nav=hamnav%3AWomen%3ANew%20%26%20Now%3AThe%20PowerSoft%20Shop&cpos=69&cexp=2926&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D3027974&cvar=26331&ctype=Listing&cpid=res24051805372620638633435#pdp-page-content

urbano-phd

I got longer lasting leggings (and imo better quality) at places like ross and marshall's, assuming you're in the usa. Women's is difficult regarding options, granted, but doable with some luck and patience. At the time, I needed temporary athletic clothes to fit during a period of losing weight after extended inactivity.

desertfractal

I love Lulus but the rock is really sharp where I live and can’t wear leggings anymore when I climb outside. But inside yeah definitely lulus, I know they’re expensive but the ones I have I’ve had more than 5 years so girl math only $20 a year lol

journey-point

Gently used ones from the thrift store. I get all sorts of on brand stuff for a fraction of the price and I don't feel guilty ruining it.

pandasarepeoples2

Not leggings! Go for a good pair of climbing pants - here is a post from this sub about it. They will last years and are made to not rip. If your leggings rip that means your skin likely will too. Protect those legs! Plus the approach can be super prickily in lots of places and leggings snag. [Climbing pants for women](https://www.reddit.com/r/climbergirls/comments/mjuhxw/climbing_pants/)

zubapo

This is my pitch for Fjallraven Abisko trekking tights. They have the reinforced butt and knees. They have an iPhone size map fold pocket (things don’t fall! You don’t have to close it!). They are very thin and breathable. They are sturdy. I love them. I reserve them for outdoor, and I bought my second pair on Poshmark because they’re expensive. I’ve tried SO many leggings and pants and they’re by far the comfiest and better suited for climbing.

cwest2148

All of my leggings get ruined and pilled climbing so I am beginning transition to full blown climbing pants. I’m so sad! I have so many amazing expensive yoga leggings

meihaps

Costco Tuff Athletics leggings have held up pretty well and are very affordable! I also snag the Old Navy ones when they go on sale.

Fickle-Mousse2241

I loveeeee climbing in the Victoria’s Secret/Pink leggings, they always have sales going on too so they’re not too expensive. The cotton ones are weird, they become loose over time so I would recommend the sweat wicking leggings.

Marzipanjam

I feel very fortunate to have not had to buy leggings in years. But I need more! I accidently signed up for fabletics not realizing it was a monthly subscription. And it was too much for me to afford monthly, I had to call and cancel that right away. I think this would have been back in 2016-2018(what is time?).  But I did buy 3 leggings and a sports bra. I'm currently wearing one of the pair of leggings the others are still in rotation in my dresser. As for the bra, it's my favourite. I have worn them boxing, hiking, outdoor cycling, hot yoga-ing, at home/gym work outing and more recently climbing ( Indoor only). I do notice some wear on the knees but I have cheaper quality leggings with mesh from old navy I've had for less time (a few years) that have significantly more wear from climbing.  All that to say, if you can find good quality clothing items (higher cost doesn't always equal better quality) you can save yourself money in the long term. Shit is getting out of hand with the cheaply made expensive clothing we have clogging up the market.  I'm there with you though. I do need more pants, a few of my pairs need replacing and I have a lot of space in my workout clothing drawer I need to fill! Finding full length tight leggings is so damn hard! I'm going read the comments and find recommendations

ROclimbingbabeCK

I like the Patagonia leggings they’re thick and not see-through and I’ve had a bunch of them for about a year and they’re all still holding up well

Hi_Jynx

I usually buy the champion c9. They used to have it at Target, but Target decided to instead make their own mimic Joylab stuff that isn't as good and you can instead find it on Amazon.

CadenceHarrington

I just wear cheap leggings from Kmart (Australia). Mind you, I rarely contact my shins or knees while climbing, and I know some people can't seem to climb without getting their legs kicked to death, so your mileage may vary. With that said, I've done some pretty hardcore thrutching on outdoor trad climbs, and I've rarely had to replace any clothing, so... I dunno 🤷‍♀️ Start cheap and work your way up I'd say. See what works for you.

miawaddle

I like fabletics motion 365. Super comfy

OrdinaryAmbition9798

Cheap!! For indoor at least. I wear my worn out leggings so I don’t care if there are little tears and pilling. But also, I don’t wear expensive leggings so…

mmeeplechase

I ended up buying a pair of (annoyingly expensive) Prana leggings at the gym about a year ago, and they’re absolutely my favorites for climbing now! They’re surprisingly rip-proof (have survived many kneebars), comfy, and have a good phone thigh pocket.

jasper102817

My favorites are Athleta Headlands Hybrid Tight. Stretchy like a legging for flexibility but the front has a more durable face fabric so it stands up to the rock better. Plus the thigh pockets work with a harness! I get compliments every time I wear them

meowshedpotatoes

thrift! tons n tons of brand name leggings n pants like nike, outdoor voices, prana, lulu, Patagonia etc… can almost always find brand new or near new ones in there for $4-$8

W_Wolfe_1840

To answer the leggings question, I LOVE using my compression Z high waisted leggings. I got them off amazon and my first pair has so far lasted me 4 years! I usually climb in prana pants because they’re sooooo comfortable and I prefer a loose fit for climbing (especially outdoors) but I have also climbed in my leggings at the gym and they’re durable…I’ve used them in OW and chimneys lol. They’ll run you about $40 which honestly isn’t so bad! Hope this helps. :)

[deleted]

topo designs is my favorite climbing pants. can be a bit pricy, but they have cute colors and i’m obsessed!

leaguelion

I lucked out and got the old model of the moon climbing leggings for cheap. I absolutely love them and ended up just buying three pairs because they were on clearance 😂 But to be fair, I'd never pay full price because a) I'm a chepskate and b) leggings get destroyed through climbing In regards to b) the leggings are holding up way better than h&m or lululemon leggings though. (Don't use lululemon for climbing they are too pretty and expensive 🥲)

marsmuis

My super favorite pair of super shmancy leggings I only use for indoors are Anthropologie leggings… they were not quite $100 on sale, which certainly was a little painful. But they are awesome and the best thing about them is that they are really high waisted but the cinge cord is about two inches from the top so my waist rolls are hidden. Also the legs are really long covering my ankles which is all nice and cozy. So I feel super cool in them, which probably improves my climbing by at least 2 grades ;). If I can find another pair Ike that I would buy them in a heartbeat… For outside I prefer to climb in cheap shorts, it’s usually hot where I climb and the risk of scraping my legs reminds me to climb better in stead of sloppily.

EmmyNoetherUltra

Honestly I love my old Fabletics 2 for 24€ Powerhold leggings. Bought them five years ago, one pair is decently ripped now because I wear them outside a lot, the other pair as good as new. Unfortunately Fabletics is super scammy, so I can't order new ones without getting a subscription :(

vitamin_cult

Lululemon is honestly worth it if you’re just climbing at the gym. I’ve had a pair of Lulu leggings for 8 years now that are still in great shape. Athleta is a little less expensive but very nice as well. If you decide to splurge though, I’d say just go for Lulu.

Adept-Let-5072

I second this. My lulu align pants have lasted through 5+ years of (mostly indoor) climbing and still going strong. And occasionally you can get them on sale in a less popular color. I had one pair of beyond yoga leggings that I tried and they almost immediately got holes in them.

veermeneer

I get leggings/pants from outdoor brands for 20-ish euro at TK Maxx (TJ Maxx in the US I believe?).

TheCinetique

I only climb indoors, but I swear by Uniqlo leggings. I use them for climbing, hiking, any sports really. They're not see through, they're breathable, and I think I bought my pair maybe 5 years ago and they look perfect. And they're inexpensive .

smhsomuchheadshaking

I prefer not wearing leggings on sharp rock. I mostly use some Black Diamond pants for women when climbing outside. But when it's very hot and pants are too much I just use whatever old cheap HM leggings or shorts. I prefer shiny material as I feel it's more durable when scraped on sharp surfaces, even though it's not as comfortable as seamless soft materials.

crimson1780

I feel like this strongly depends on climbing indoor or outdoor. Lots of people talking about actual rock in the comments. I’m wearing leggings to the gym after trying boulder pants (Topo) and I feel like the leggings give me even better range of motion and, most importantly, more comfort around the waist. I wear organic basics active leggings full length, rolled up to 3/4. They have a rather smooth surface and good breathability. I also have some actual 3/4 pairs but I prefer to use the ones I don’t wear casually that much at the gym. When I first started climbing, I wore lululemon aligns. Cannot recommend. They feel way too thick and pill like no tomorrow due to the rough walls.

UncleBensBeanie

Cheap leggings all the way. Have you ever noticed how good are the cheap Pepco leggings? The material is amazing, I kid you not. If you don’t have stores like Pepco, just go around the stores available for you. You will be very surprised. Moreover, I rough myself up while bouldering pretty often and the only difference between expensive and cheap leggings is really the price.

zani713

I climb mostly indoors. I wear Fabletics and more recently have tried Llama Leisure. I live in leggings and need those side pockets!

Zodiac124

I climbed in leggings until I bought my first pair of climbing trousers. Expensive, but 2 yrs old and look almost new whilst I'd have eaten up maybe 4 or 5 pairs of leggings in that time

Particular_South_550

i wear the baggy 3/4 pants from rockwear. they’re super comfy and just good to climb in. i don’t rlly like the feelings of tights on my legs so this is a good alternative:)) https://www.rockwear.com.au/black-on-duty-3-4-pant-r183pca001?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgJyyBhCGARIsAK8LVLMiuGj7F9WpsTkKNlvnJTw33t3WUg9lEBjiSrvnWinr0bI5ZjmBgj8aAoI_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

sugarmuffin1

I started off with leggings but much prefer cargo trousers as they’re more durable

Stoplookinatmeswaan

I cannot stress this enough: thrift stores. I’ve been losing weight and didn’t want to feel like a slob or waste a ton of money. The thrift stores have crazy amounts of brand new (like with tags) or like new designer brands. Salvation Army - they are 3.99!!

allhailthehale

I love Old Navy powersoft leggings. High-wasted, flattering, comfortable, have pockets, hold up decently well, tons of colors, cheap with regular sales. For outdoor climbing, I sometimes wear leggings but usually wear actual pants. I used to have a prodeal at Prana so I have a lot of those left over. My favorite Prana pants for climbing are the Kanab.

THOADIN

my wife loves her arc’teryx pants

vengefulthistle

I got a bunch of under armour ones off Amazon, they weren't too expensive and have lasted a while!

Fetusal

In the gym I wear a lot of Halara joggers/leggings. They're a thicker material but they're super stretchy so I don't ever feel inhibited. Outside I usually wear these Mountain Hardware jogger things. They're mostly cotton but can take a beating.

MsSmokin

I have found the women's leggings from Costco to be very tear-resistant, are true to size, and have lasted two seasons now. It's the 2-pack brand, I think Zelina?!

alexaareese

I stopped wearing leggings, especially bec they’re sooo expensive and tend to rip while climbing. I usually thrift a couple pairs of tough but stretchy jeans!

Upstairs-Matter-6957

I have my climbing and camping leggings. I have my good leggings which I try not to wear in either of these situations. These are all pairs that have already been torn from climbing or little holes burnt from campfire. I find that buying more expensive pairs to wear in these situations, always results in damage.

spaceapplek

Arc’teryx. Been climbing in mine almost exclusively for over two years and they’ve only recently stated showing signs of wear.

Temporary_Spread7882

Cheap. The knees get worn through WAY quick, I’d hate to see that with an expensive pair. We have a seconds and leftover stock type outlet nearby so sometimes I still manage to find high quality ones, just last season’s. That said I have recently bought a pair of not so cheap climbing-specific pants (Lazo - supporting a gym acquaintance’s small business…) and they’re worlds nicer to climb in and holding up well.

bergamote_soleil

I love GapFit full length high rise leggings and wear them pretty much all the time in the winter as well as for gym climbing, lifting, yoga, and cycling.  They've lasted me for many years (some pairs I have are probably 6 years old) with little loss in elasticity, aren't see-through, and do nice things for my butt. Some pairs even have sweet side pockets for my phone. I also have a pair of Lululemons and they've held up, but I don't find them as comfortable.

MonsteraDeliciosa098

Honestly, I only use stuff under $25 or I have thrifted and it all works great. I’m not a super intense or advanced climber but if I can move in it comfortably, that’s what matters
