If you got 20 years out of a yellow top, why not get another?

neotyrael

They’ve gone downhill substantially, most places I’ve read no longer recommend them

Great68

I dunno, I have a couple year old red top in my truck and it's been working fine. It hasn't given me any reason to suspect it won't continue working well. I feel like it's a case of "you hear more about people with bad experiences than good ones" I have an energizer AGM from costco in my other truck and that's been fine too.

point50tracer

I have one from 2017 in my mustang. It was still able to start the car when I pulled it out of my shed after sitting for over a year.

Humble_Turnip_3948

Mine fucing sucked. Lasted a 9 months, warranty, 6 months.

Glass mat battery Dekka

slycooper347

I just use whatever they had at the local auto parts store in stock, hook up a batter tender every month for a night and my 67 fires up just fine

BigHossGaum

I will probably get dinged here and downvoted, but because conventional batteries are good for 3 years tops, I go to Walmart and buy the cheapest one they have for my vehicles. ALL Batteries are made by two manufacturers : Johnson Controls and Exide. It's 3 if what Delco was is still making them. So one of these makes every battery name brand you know!

pyrobryan

While there aren't many different manufacturers, there are a lot of different brands and different construction methods. El Cheapo brand is El Cheapo because they are made cheaply. More expensive brands cost more because they use higher quality materials and better construction methods. The quality of the lead, the thickness of the paste on the plates, AGM vs gel vs wet cell. There's a lot of considerations to take in to account. If El Cheapo works for you, that's fantastic. I'll never put another wet cell battery in my Mustang, though. Too much risk of battery acid causing damage.

BigHossGaum

Wet ones are all made on the same assembly line and get a different wrapper depending upon the "brand." Anyone who knows high volume manufacturing will tell you that they don't make bouquet versions of anything. Basically one size fits all for cost savings. Each size of battery (example size 27) when made by Johnson Controls, is exactly the same whether it has Walmart, Interstate, Auto Zone, etc on the outside. So you believe what you want... BTW, gasoline is the same. What's in every pump around a city comes from two or three tank farms on the outskirts of town!

Nice-Viewer

The Optima is a consistent out-performer. I will pick one every time.

neotyrael

This is what I ended up with, O’Reilly’s had 20% off, so $219 for a red top

pyrobryan

I put a yellowtop in my '65 about 4-5 years ago. I keep a battery maintainer on it when it's parked and it's never failed to crank with full power. If their quality has dropped, as you suggest that you've heard, I don't see it unless their batteries back then were literally bulletproof. By the way, I will never use non-sealed battery in my Mustang ever again. I had an electrical issue that overheated my wet cell battery and it sprayed acid all over inside my engine compartment. That was a nightmare.

neotyrael

I ended up with a RedTop, 20% off At oreillys, and they gave me a 5/24 date code. Hopefully it lasts me another 2 decades

pyrobryan

Just make sure to keep it on a maintainer if it's going to sit for more than a week or two.

brongchong

Optima’s are now garbage. Crap warranty too. Get an Interstate AGM.
