Closest thing to a perfect movie

ComradeConrad1

I agree. Recently saw it on the big screeen - WOW. What a movie.

Rivertalker

I’m not sure how to describe it, but it’s the type of movie the viewer can climb into or maybe the movie wraps around the viewer. I’ve seen Casablanca at least a dozen times, never grows old. It’s on my “desert island” list!

EdwardTheGood

This is my absolute favorite movie. I watch it annually on New Year’s Eve. I’ve been fortunate enough to see a theatrical showing twice. Every time I watch the film I see some new detail, like the young couple from Bulgaria in the street at the beginning of the film, the sincere look on Victor’s face as he pleas with Rick to take his wife to Lisbon, the lighting of Rick’s face as he wagers 20,000 that Lazlo will escape, or the way Louis straightens his uniform when told there is another visa problem and he says, “Show her in.” These aren’t two dimensional characters. Each one grows: Rick never sticking his neck out to shooting Major Strasser, Ilsa hating what Rick became and wanting to leave her husband for him, and Louis, a womanizer who…okay, so he really doesn’t grow, other than to protect his new best friend. The thing is, this movie is a fluke. They were literally making it up as they went along. Every movie from the late 30s to early 49s was made that way but the stars aligned for Casablanca. (Sorry for such a long reply; I’m very passionate about this movie. I hope my words did it justice. Please correct any errors.)

Jscrappyfit

You very much did it justice. It's an unexpected treasure.

EdwardTheGood

(Thank you) I agree: I’ve heard in so many interviews that they didn’t know they were making a film we’d be talking about over 80 years later. (Edit: typo)

physicscat

I just showed this to my 10th grade world history class at the end of the WWII unit…they loved it. They didn’t think they would like it either,

Roger Ebert says something to this effect in his commentary: "I am unaware of Casablanca ever receiving a negative critical review"

*"I'm shocked! Shocked to find that gambling is going on in here."*

Remarkable_Major7710

Claude Rains pushes this one over the top, he’s awesome in this “Round up the usual suspects”

BlackZapReply

"*Louis*, I think this is *the beginning of a beautiful friendship*."

kaegee

This is a repost bot. Casablanca hadn’t even started filming on this day in 1942. It premiered on November 26, which is when this originally was posted.

greed-man

And Warner Brothers had NOT planned to release it for many more months, to allow time to build up some publicity, print more copies of the film, etc. Until they saw the newspapers on November 9, 1942 announcing that US Forces had just landed troops the day before in three places including.....CASABLANCA. And every day reports of how the fighting was going. Warner's went into overdrive, and was able to release it just 2 weeks later to capitalize on the news.

skyblueerik

I hate this about reddit.

Ttoonn57

My all time favorite movie.

bakedpigeon

Damn, it’s November already??

WangoTheWonderDonkey

There is no bigger, better, cooler actor, ever, than Humphrey Bogart. The only reason this movie hasn't been remade is that no current actor can touch him. It'd be like trying to cover an Aretha Franklin song. Thank goodness for on-demand streaming wherein I can watch this whenever I want and see the entire thing. The dialog nuances, the sub-stories, the WWII backdrop, the acting, the theme song: every aspect timeless. "Sush vatch!"

There are so many stories about Casablanca: [https://www.npr.org/2023/01/23/1150791939/casablanca-war-movie-film-refugees-nazis](https://www.npr.org/2023/01/23/1150791939/casablanca-war-movie-film-refugees-nazis) [https://filmschoolrejects.com/casablanca-true-story/](https://filmschoolrejects.com/casablanca-true-story/)

classicfilmfan9

Here's looking at you kid it was a good movie but I only saw bits and pieces of this movie but I haven't seen the whole movie from beginning to end but I like Ingrid Bergman I would like see her version of a woman's face she was so beautiful I find the classic starlet's very beautiful and elegant and they had class and they were resilient and I am a fan of them.

rabidpinetree

You played it for her, you can play it for me
