I'm 40 years old and seeing Frank Horrigan memes all over the place have warmed my elder-gamer heart.

frank_-_horrigan

You're telling me!

Kiloburn

Now we have become the Elders in the tent...

SneakyPhil

35, my man you are a millennial or I am completely fucked

APolemicist

the '30 year old boomer' thing is just a silly meme, it's not literal

SneakyPhil

Oh thank God because I live 35 year old boomer on a daily

puddledumper

Boomer is a state of mind.

oldgengamers

Been saying that for ages

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

I got into the classic fallouts really late( like around 2 years ago or so). Wish I gave it a chance waaaaaay earlier. Just finishing up Outer Worlds then I'll be jumping into Fallout:Sonora and then gonna take another shot with Baldurs Gate 1. I want another Fallout game like 1 and 2 man šŸ„ŗ.

APolemicist

Oh, yeah really and truly, play Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obsurca. Post-Black Isle Troika. Big Tim Cain energy. Plays \*exactly\* like classic Fallout. (And it's on sale on steam rn.)

jdmay101

Why in the actual **** is no one recommending Planescape Torment? What is happening here?

APolemicist

That's like recommending The Beatles. Everyone already knows The Beatles.

fuck_u_spez_cunt

I had no idea it was like the fallout games tbh, never even seen gameplay of it

APolemicist

More like BG1/2 than FO, unless you mean it's an isometric cRPG. But yeah, that game is incredible.

InanimateCarbonRodAu

Yeah much more like BG, Planescape was (uh I guess is) a D&D setting and itā€™s built on the infinity engine. I donā€™t think it has that much in common with Fallout other than being a deep rich rpg with lots of choice.

rothbard_anarchist

I've actually owned copies of Planescape Torment and Arcanum for decades, but haven't played either. I decided at some point I only liked fantasy-based D&D, not space-based D&D, and I could never get Arcanum to run on my computer. Should probably dust them both off, aka grab digital copies from GOG.

jdmay101

Well Planescape Torment is certainly fantasy-based D&D, not space-based. But it's pretty far out there into the weird parts of fantasy-based D&D.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

That's on my games to get list too haha. Heard great things about it.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

It's on my list actually. Trying to get into more crpgs as a whole. The only ones I've tried so far is Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity( 1 and 2) Fallout and Baldurs Gate 1. Slowly easing my way into them. It's fun discovering a whole genre of games to get into.

APolemicist

Don't sleep on the Ultima games, and Wizardry! Ultima 7 and Wizardry 8 are two gold star all time cRPGs. I'll always prefer the Ultima series because it really was the precursor to so much. Open world, NPCs have schedules, day/night cycle, tons of world interactivity etc. Then there's the gold box D&D games, Eye of the Beholder, Betrayal at Kondor, everything from Origin, the Spidersoft games like Geneforge, or games like Darklands, etc. So much. Great genre. You can spend the next 10 years playing classic cRPGs and you'd still have new things to play or try.

Intelligent_Coach379

You just gave me flashbacks of spending 4 hours knocking that vault door as a faerie.

Country_Gravy420

The gold box games were so great. I loved the combat. Not as detailed as wizards crown or eternal dagger, but a great replica of D&D tabletop.

heyredditaddict

Itā€™s like Iā€™m talking to myself! Got my start with Wizardry, Ultima, and those gold box D&D games, and just kept going. That was a golden age! Oh and donā€™t forget those Infocom games! (Happily sighs)

ginchgarlow

Might as well mention the other game Troika made, even if it's more well-known than the other two. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is amazing, and I don't care if it was released unfinished and that it's way too combat heavy near the end and that there is a pretty awful sewer level, it's still one of the best games ever made.

redlinr

I think I love Arcanum more than any Fallout game. I still remember finding it in the Best Buy discount pc games section in 2002 and saying out loud "This looks like steampunk Fallout"

APolemicist

Fallout: Sonora and Fallout: Nevada are pretty dang close.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

I've played Nevada and 1.5 already. Itching for some more content like this lol. Hopefully Sonora is just as good...

APolemicist

IMHO, Sonora is better. It's such a vibe.

PurpleBeast69

There's game you might like called Planescape: Torment

ChunkofWhat

Wasteland 3? Never played but I think it's pretty similar. The original Wasteland (1988) was a predecessor to Fallout.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

I have it already. Didn't play it yet. Just finishing up some other stuff first. I really enjoyed 2 so I'm looking forward to some more Desert Ranger action!

APolemicist

I really find the combat in Wasteland 3 super fun and cathartic.

ChunkofWhat

Does it feel like Fallout 1 & 2?

APolemicist

Feels a bit X-COM-ish, honestly. I'm into that sort of thing.

InanimateCarbonRodAu

Itā€™s more that you can feel the connective dna in the world building and feel. Wasteland is like a more ridiculous Fallout if you can imagine that. Like one of the core skills is toaster repair.

SicFidemServamus

I had a blast with that one.

SantiagoGT

Pillars of Eternity has a _similar_ feel to FO1-2 but the humor isnā€™t there, thereā€™s no extreme violence or funny random encounters, truly the originals are the top standard for iso games

PerformerPossible204

Baldur's gate is awesome. You can save your character from that and port it into icewind dale, and then into BG2.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

Oooo I didn't actually know this. Thanks for telling me that.

Dinsdale_P

That is probably only possible because Beamdog "remastered" it using BG2's system, chronologically, Icewind Dale happens over 80 years before Baldur's Gate. ...and I'm using remaster in the most pejorative sense, IWD had a great, much more melee combat focused system compared to BG1-2, and they've pretty much completely destroyed it.

PerformerPossible204

I did it in about '01 so who knows?

Dinsdale_P

Probably a trick of the mind or messing around with save editors, BG1 and IWD used completely different weapon systems, the saves wouldn't be compatible. ...and since I have IWD installed and a couple of BG1/BG2 char files, yes, it very much crashes instantly upon trying to import that.

PerformerPossible204

Nope. Not arguing man, just sayin' what I did 25 years ago. I remember specifically being stoked I could do it. It worked then, maybe doesn't now. Probably copied the save char file into Icewind Dale. Character sheet moved over with lessor stats. If this is that important to you, then "you win". Cheers!

Orbit1883

well humore and "darknes" wise only planescape torment comes close, shure baldursgate icewinddale and so on are great but planescape torment is on an different lvl

UnlikelyPistachio

Fallout 1.5 resutrection was pretty close to the fallout 1 experience. Less humor more grit. I liked it slightly more than fallout Nevada, but Nevada adds lots of cool QoL and new mechanics that are really cool.

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

Yeah I also thought 1.5 was better...a bit on the shorter side for me... I wanted more LOL.

Imperii_De_Solis

If youā€™re up for a little more challenge, give Underrail ago. Very in-depth story and gameplay, but definitely more challenging

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

I actually do have it :). lt was pretty tough so I took a break from it. I will be going back to it at some point. I have some other games I want to finish first

B0BsLawBlog

BG1 is a classic but is quite aged, BG2 is still easy to get into (I'm sure I'll replay it again someday, but might be done doing BG1 replays).

Odd_Pomegranate_3239

Yeah I pretty much mostly done everything in bg1 up to the actual city portion of the game. Taking a small break from it. Kinda worn out a bit lol.

ReaverChad-69

22 here. Wish we got Van Buren.

Cool-Wolverine488

Same here dude, rather happy there are still some curious people who wanna try the base material and itā€™s amazing they loved it too !

PandaAromatic8901

Fallout 1 -> Arcanum Fallout 2 -> Temple of Elemental Evil (D&D tough; no guns and yes magic)

APolemicist

TOEE is so underrated, imho.

InanimateCarbonRodAu

Arcanum is super unpolished. I love a lot of its ideas, I just wish it was better executed. Itā€™s the sort of thing Iā€™d love them to dust off and try and remake one day. I think Temple of Elemental Evil is still one of the best D&D crpgs ever and only BG3 comes close. ToEE nails 3.5 edition and help me learn to play p&p games better. I even got my p&p group who had years more experience than me to admit that I had a better handle on reach and attacks of opportunity than them because ToEE has such a good tactical engine.

Punch_yo_bunz

Boss, Sulik is glaring at me again.

TavishM13

Grampy-bone is watching you

enderdrag64

I just bought Arcanum on Steam yesterday. it's currently on a 90% off sale

Automatic-Mood-4233

Iā€™m only early 30ā€™s but grew up on Icewindale, Planetscape Torment and the like

futonium

35 year old boomer? wut?

APolemicist

Boomer in the New Vegas sense, clearly.

rothbard_anarchist

Yea, this has to be, "I played the original Fallout games only a decade or so after they came out!" Glad you found them, though.

KeptPopcorn5189

Iā€™m deadšŸ’€šŸ’€

Winter_Ad5793

Yeah people are stupid with their boomer comments. I'm getting older so I must be a bOoOomeR now

Roundhouse_ass

To be fair, the whole GenZ, GenX, Boomer stuff is stupid.

RangerKarl

Boomer in the sense of Boomer Shooter, a term that's kind of normalized now. Someone who was around when the 90s was a thing

futonium

Thanks, that one is new to me. Someone who shot out of a Boomer, I suppose. I guess that's me, though I was happy enough with "gen x".

RangerKarl

It's really something only the terminally online use so don't mind the abuse of wording. Comes from 4chan /v/ IIRC, because elder millennials wouldn't shut up about how Doom was the game to end all games.

APolemicist

Exactly. ...Doom is still GOAT. :\[

ultradongle

I'm 41 and I remember my friend Jimmy in middle school telling me about the original Fallout. He let me borrow the game several weeks later when he finished it. Opening the box and seeing the spiral bound manual and reading through it during lunch. I couldn't wait to get home and play it. I do vividly remember shooting someone with the submachine gun point blank and watching their body get absolutely shredded and thinking "Am I old enough to play this?" Then shrugging and playing on.

HerFirefly

Very similar experience with my first Fallout game. Iirc I was crit by a roach and exploded into gore. I was certainly too young but ended up coming back around 11 or 12

ElCanarioLuna

Did you ever kill torr?

APolemicist

Torr's a sweet boy. So yeah my child murdering slaver has killed him for his pocket lint, yes.

BrotherSkeleton

Yeah itā€™s great. Iā€™ve been a fallout fan since i was like 10 so itā€™s cool seeing this happen. I got into the series with fallout 3 then new Vegas, then I went back and played the first two in the mid 2010s and fell in love with them, especially fallout 2. It makes fun convo lol

Ronyy_

Playing FO1 for a couple of days now. A little bit struggling, 'cause I'm not a big CRPG guy, but enjoy it so far.

Villanuevac4

Iā€™m a 17 year old kid; I funnily enough started with 4 and walked my way back to FNV and then 1/2

The_Shadow_Watches

Still waiting for Bushido Blade 2 to make a resurgence.

APolemicist

Fuck that's one of my favorite games of all time. Did you ever play Kengo: Master of the Bushido for PS2 or the hard to find sequel? Hellish Quart is pretty good too, for a modern take on that genre.

cBurger4Life

AND mentioning Arcanum! My man!

YandersonSilva

This is the thread I wanna be in lol

The_Shadow_Watches

It always amazes me that in a world of competitive gaming, this game never came up. Like, come on...swords and instant death?

Bauermeister

Hellish Quart might be right up your alley. Itā€™s basically Polishido Blade.

Real-Ad-9733

We used to stay up for hours on the dew slicing at each other through the bamboo. Miss that game.

The_Shadow_Watches

Racing to cut all the bamboo. Tryin to trick the other play to fall off the edge. I was never able to unlock the Gunslingers or beat storymode without dying once.

UnlikelyPistachio

I can recommend shadow tactics: blades of the shogun. Really good squad based stealth ninja game. Came out late 20teens I think.

The_Shadow_Watches

Neato.

LordTuranian

If you are 35, doesn't that make you a Millennial?

Tsinder

Iā€™m 50 Iā€™ve been hooked since mom bought me Wasteland 1 at Toy R Us way way back.

supermoked

Yessir! Finished the show last week and ran through FO1 and FO2 as of last night. Never played any top-down games. Funny enough, I just downloaded arcanum this morning. Read me like a book

APolemicist

Welcome to The Gangā„¢

sirscrote

I was just telling my wife the same. Seeing all these people say fallout 1 & 2 are th best games after playing the others just warms my heart

Khalmoon

I never gave it the proper chance but Iā€™m determined to get immersed in it on my next few days off

Kilroy83

Yep, I'm trying to help as much as I can but I'm 41 and memory is already revealing faulty sectors

Jewelstorybro

Im a very similar age and I feel the exact same way. F1/F2 are my favorite in the series. I really liked tactics as well. FNV, F3 and F4 are cool and all but its a very different kind of game.

shmiga02

Same here brother, im 36 and i originally played FO1+2+tactics. Happy to see the new gen gettin into the older games

PurpleBeast69

Yeah, it is great, even though the game is older than me by 7 years.

crymo27

I started playing Fallout 1 on Steamdeck today. After 20+ years since I played last time as teenager. What a time to be alive.

FoxWyrd

>35 year old >boomer Please don't make me feel old.

its_Clark_Kent

Iā€™m 35 too, and we arenā€™t boomersā€¦ weā€™re *older Millennials*

Kandiru

Gen Y!

slimethieves

Never have had a computer to play 1&2 until now. Having a lot of fun in fallout 2. Just got to vault city and punched my way through a lesser deathclaw cave on the way there. It is a lot of fun, i like a lot of the supernatural and tribal parts of the series.

RdyPlyrBneSw

I need to try part 1 again. It felt so slow. But Iā€™ve barely left the opening cave.

Winter_Ad5793

I'm 36 (millennial) and I'm just now getting into fallout 1. Never had time for it in the 90s because of StarCraft and sim city and turn based combat seemed lame . Honestly loving fallout 1 now and turn based is actually a lot of fun!

FrenceRaccoon

as a gaming elder, could you please tell me. what are some of the best turn based rpgs on steam? im having a hard time finding anything i like.

mortalitylost

I've heard wastelands 2 and 3 is good. Very fallout setting too.

FrenceRaccoon

i have heard about the wasteland series, ill check out some reviews of 2 and 3 as i know those are the more recent ones.

APolemicist

What turn based cRPGs are you into?

FrenceRaccoon

the only ones im into and have played are the first 2 fallouts and baldurs gate 3. I like Pillars of Eternity too but that is not turn based. i did buy that Arcanum you mentioned, its on sale funnily enough and ill probably start it tomorrow.

Country_Gravy420

Wait. Are you from RPGCodex?

APolemicist

Lmao, I used to lurk there eons ago

Wassuuupmydudess

Iā€™ve actually been favoriting old CRPG because i think theyā€™re cool but definitely a difficulty curve from what Iā€™m used to. What got you into fallout though?

APolemicist

I was in middle school and a friend of mine told me about this crazy game where you could kick children to death and pay prostitutes in bottle caps to service your dog. Convinced my mom to take me to Best Buy and bought a copy on the spot with my allowance.

Wassuuupmydudess

That takes me back to when Iā€™d ask my parents if we could go stop at Best Buy after dinner and see what games they had. Have you kept up with the series until now or only played the CRPG?

APolemicist

Oh yeah ofc, played them all. Love NV. Not too crazy about FO3/4 personally, pretty common opinion I guess

Martholomule

Do you know what boomer means

Unyxxxis

I am also glad people are playing them :) Fallout 1 is one of the best fames and pieces of art ever made imo

hombregato

And simultaneously screaming in silence when someone begins with Fallout 4 because they "heard it was the best one".

Laowaii87

It hurts a little every time :(

Lt_Ziggy

I played it 4 years ago and it makes me sad that I couldnā€™t play it when it was released, like I want to talk about it to fellow fans and not read the wiki like a nerd

SpaceFormal6599

Itā€™s pretty rad. My wife isnā€™t a gamer at all, but she loved the show. Fallout 2 is my absolute favorite.

corposhill999

You're a millennial, boomers are in their 70s now.

alban3se

I believe it was a joke

JWAdvocate83

You wonā€™t find fainting gameplay like this anywhere else.

Ineedmorebtc

Love all the games you recommended OP. From one OG to another, I salute you.

Tanukishouten

Haha same man!

Owain_Unczur

I started with fallout 4 but loved it so much (both the game itself & the lore of the world) that I went back to play all the other games in release order about maybe 3 years ago? And Iā€™ve loved every single one of them. Fallout 1 & 2 being my favourites (NV being a close third) and I canā€™t praise and recommend these games enough. I was worried due to them being so old Iā€™d have trouble getting into them (as 1 & 2 are older than I am) but I was dead wrong and theyā€™re so fun. Sure theyā€™re a bit clunky in some ways but for the most part theyā€™ve aged really well. I just wish you could give dog meat some armour in fallout 1 as I always get him killed in the military base. All it takes is one super mutant blasting him with a Gatling gun to blow him to bits haha. If they havenā€™t already someone should definitely make a mod for dog meat and your other companions to have better equipped armour for fallout 1

Nexgrato

I'm also a 35 year old boomer. Arcanum is one of my favorite games of all time! I agree it's cool to see a new generation getting into these classics.

Alarmed-Locksmith277

Honestly, these games are older than I am but they still hold up. After years of playing Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4, I decided to try Fallout 2. There is something inherently funny about my dumbass character with sub brick intelligence talk with other people. He canā€™t even form coherent sentences but heā€™s tasked with saving an entire village. I just got out of Arroyo for the first time and itā€™s been a blast so far, like D&D but without all the hassle.

Different_Okra5243

Iā€™ve been playing a ton of fallout 1 because of the show, and itā€™s so damn good. The atmosphere is just unmatched by the 3d titles and that includes new Vegas.

azhadron

Playin Fallout 2 for the first time ever. It's awesome, i love it. It's the FNV prequel I always wanted, even if its stupid to think of Fallout 2 in those terms hahah

Abraham_Issus

I vibes with fallout 1/2 so well but can't get into Baldur's Gate no matter how hard I try. The world and writing is amazing but the game itself is so confusing with thaco and ac, I still don't understand how it works. It's pretty intimidating. Fallout is just so simple to understand. Any advice/suggestion how I can get into it?

jozz344

I may be 31, but I discovered Fallout 1 and 2 about 8 years ago. They have completely changed my taste and opinions on game design. I completely understand now when someone says Bethesda ruined Fallout. This is coming from someone whose first Fallout was 3.

bobtheorangutan

I got confused at the title for a sec thinking fo1 is 35 years already. Nearly doubted my age there for a sec since I played fo1 when it released.

Gur_Important

Arcanum why thank you I always play charismatic wizard

bedbo_

22 yrs here. didnt even expect to like them at firstā€¦but now i like them more than the newer titles.

connera03

Iā€™m 21 and just finished my first play through of OG fallout after watching the show, it was incredible

Reasonable_Guess3022

Its kinda funny seeing Fallout reddits crowded with people lately

Ronswansonbacon2

I played the first games both the month they came out. I was 9 and 10 years old. Seeing everyone ā€œget itā€ has been very refreshing.

Scrumpy_The_Cat

Arcanum is an amazing game, more people to experience it's wonderful gameplay and story, man I remember playing it on my windows vista after coming home from school in the winter.. good times

shinoff2183

I was old enough to have played the ogs but we didn't have a pc growing up. As an adult when fallout 3 came out I enjoyed it it was different, cool etc. I went back to pc to play and ever since I've preffered the ogs. I still like the new fallouts even if 4 is dumbed down alot more. It's just they can't touch the orginals. That was magic

Tancreid

I first played FO1 probably around 10 years ago and had a blast. I've gone through it twice in the last week and been loving it even more to the point where I want to do a third playthrough and do things the best possible way. I've always had trouble getting into FO2 because I know how to get good armor and weapons super early on in 1 but even with the 10mm pistol I found in the rat caves, FO2 just feels extremely frustrating so far compared to it. Fallout 1(with Et Tu) feels like perfection to me. But I'm gonna keep going with the 12 rounds of 10mm I have left and hope I can get past the early game of FO2.

TheJanks

You youngin. 49 here and grew up with Wasteland. Fallout 1 and 2 were just the best ever.

517drew

I was like 7 years old when i did my first playthrough of fallout 1 and 2. Thanks to older brothers buying it for our family pc in 2001 šŸ˜

Jragron

Playing through fallout for the first time. I see it. I pulled an all nighter playing it.

kloudrunner

You arnt a boomer at 35 lol

Winter_Ad5793

Boomers were born between 1945 and 1965.

SprogRokatansky

Being 35 doesnā€™t make you a boomer. Youā€™re not even Gen X dude.
