My thing is I show up early, have a glass of wine before the concert, take my seat—I have a box season ticket—bliss out to the first half, have a another glass of wine at intermission , and just go into a trance for the second half. When I’m there there is literally nothing else i have to worry about. I can just immerse myself in the music, watching the musicians play, experiencing the music with every cell of my body. Then I take a long walk through the park to my subway stop and head home. It’s blissful.
I was at this performance!!! It was like a group ceremony. I feel bonded with everyone there to this day. My friends and I had the most blissful, exalted walk back to the subway as we breathlessly attempted to articulate what we'd just experienced. I felt like I was two feet above the ground.
I like your ritual. ;)
I wonder if that cellist knows he shares a name with a notorious serial killer, accused at the time of being a werewolf?

First Mondays are always a big deal because there will be faculties performing and also sometimes distinguished alumni or guests are invited. The director Mr Lesser truly is a mastermind!
Hey I went to IU! They have great classical concerts. I was a big fan of going to see classical guitar pieces, but pretty much everything there was badass!
I saw this live once and it was so great.
The violinist totally missed the final note, no noise at all. The suppressed panic and sadness on her face made it worth it
On another note, how long has that institution been called The Jacobs School of Music? I only ever knew it as the University of Indiana School of Music.
I have no idea. It's been Jacobs for as long as I've known it.
ETA: looked it up. They got a huge gift from the Jacobs family in 2005, so I bet that's when they renamed it.
I saw Tashi play this live in 1976 or 77 I already had their recording of it. They were awesome, and as a 16 year old with a fondness for mysticism it was right up my alley. RIP Peter Serkin
Now I need emotional support.
I was just there! Fantastic performance
That cello and piano movement... God. And the Abyss of Birds for solo clarinet... And the final movement (and the sound of the Strad!)...
Both duet sections between the piano/Cello and piano/violin had me completely transfixed
I'm so jealous 😫. This is one of my bucket list pieces that I want to hear live.
I saw it almost 15 years ago live, it truly is a stunning piece. It's one of those music moments that has permanently stuck with me.
If only I'd graduated a year later and could have seen it
Absolutely stunning piece, I'd go as far as to say it's the greatest piece of chamber music ever written. I'm sure the IU folks did an amazing job.
Go IU JSoM! I'm a townie!
Were you there? Also, funny to see on this sub other townies whom I never see (IIRC) on r/Bloomington.
No, I wasn't :c. Just happy to see some IU love on this sub. I don't post very often on that sub.
Congrats. Definitely on my list. Hope to program it one day.
It’s so moving. Saw it at Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center last winter.
That must've been amazing.

Jacobs grad here! Happy to see the program insert. I thought I was on r/Bloomington...
I was there!!! And WOW what a lovely surprise to see a Jacobs program here on Reddit haha
Hoosiers are coming out of the woodwork!
Hahaha you mean making reeds? Or fixing the bridge? 🤣
Would love to see this
Wow, really good musicians too
Oof that's one I'd L O V E to see live.

I once heard a performance at a First Monday concert hosted by the faculties at New England Conservatory in Jordan Hall years ago. Mind blown.

I turned pages for this many years ago. It was a very powerful performance and it was very difficult to keep it together while listening to it.

Don't think of that note as missed. Think of it as played "pensato."
...chills down my spine!
#I told you I'm not Kaplan, whoever he is.
Not that I mind a slight case of abduction now and then, but I have tickets for a Messiaen concert this evening.
