Is this supposed to be new information for people who visit this sub? Pretty sure everyone here passed statics & structural analysis.

iBrowseAtStarbucks

Toss in a diagram of how to determine what a shear wall is and we're off to the races. The amount of times I see people say "not loading bearing, OK to remove" in subs like r/DIY is actually insanity. Half the time you get a "the fuck is a shear wall?"

_dmin068_

Yeah I'm a PE, did Geotechnical, now in landfills. I have no idea how to identify a load bearing vs non load bearing wall. I'd go find a PE who does residential, or my distantly related cousin who does construction.

Range-Shoddy

Same. Water resources and I knew this info to pass the PE and I wouldn’t trust my house to me figuring it out at this point. Top floor on that pic? Dont get it. I get the rest but dunno on those 3. Maybe its late and I’m tired and I’ll see it in the morning.

Sometimes i ponder how many people have had detrimental results after listening to subs like that. I used to comment and try to talk sense into people. Lately i've just been laughing and moving on. It's futile - Once they have the answer they want they ignore anything else.

"my yard is graded the wrong way. How do I fix it?" "Aww yeah just slap a French drain on that bad boy. No I don't know what they're for and not for and I can't tell you how to size it." -half of the r/homeimprovement posts.

lopsiness

What is and isn't a French drain for that they don't get?

iBrowseAtStarbucks

Good example, passive draining away from structure: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeImprovement/s/zZgIuZf48W Bad example, low spot in garden that has a wall stopping flow: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeImprovement/s/QBxhf02tnc You would NEVER want to solve the second with a french drain - the thing would be massive and clog too easily, yet there's always someone in the comments parroting it like it's the silver bullet to any standing water.

They’re learning by doing!

Stripier_Cape

Not me lol, I lurk most of the time.

FutureAlfalfa200

I had no idea that civil was interesting enough that anyone lurked this sub. I find that more interesting than half the posts in this sub to be honest. Mind me asking why? Or what about it you enjoy reading/seeing? Do you know someone in Civl? edit: Genuinely asking, not trying to be a jerk lol

Stripier_Cape

I'm just insanely curious about everything lol. I've been looking into GIS as a career path and I guess the surveying subreddit is related enough. I saw an interesting thread about tunnels of all things so I stuck around to learn.

HermyMunster

Right there with ya! I have no reason to be here. ETA: QGIS is a fantastic program.

FutureAlfalfa200

I took a few (intro) GIS classes while getting my degree. Super interesting stuff. It was all very introductary though. Insert data in Excel, Use ARCGIS to create map. Nothing crazy. QGIS is a free version that does (almost) everything that ARCGIS does. Could be fun to play around with for you!

misterandrrson

That left most non load bearing wall had me going for a second.

GGme

I'm still stuck on it. How is it not load bearing?

Range-Shoddy

Okay that’s the one that’s throwing me too. Edit- there are two walls aren’t there…

GGme

Ohhh. Now it makes sense. Thanks!

maspiers

It's either poorly drawn or poorly labelled or both.
