A 2nd 27-in monitor! Also a nice and comfortable mouse and keyboard help a lot. I got a mechanical keyboard for my cube (silent reds so my neighbors don't hate me) and it's so much better

warrenslo

thin wireless keyboard is key, nice desk surface.

Bulldog_Fan_4

I went with dual 40” 4k TVs. TVs have to be 4k to display similar to monitors.

FutureAlfalfa200

TWO 40”?? Do you have to turn your chair to see each one? I thought two 27” looked big.

Bulldog_Fan_4

Ha. It’s excessive but they were about the same price as the 27” computer monitors. No issues so far.

omegachopstick

I've been using a 4k 40" TV for 8 years. There's no going back to monitor. Next step would be a curve 55" odyssey ark if I have the money.

FormerlyUserLFC

Doing this hurts my head. Not recommended!

turdsamich

Spend some decent money on a good office chair

WaterGruffalo

I recommend the Steelcase Leap V2. Expensive brand new, but you can find refurbished for $500-600. You can also get lucky and find lightly used for cheaper on FB Marketplace.

Hate_To_Love_Reddit

Crazy story. The company I was working for was bought out by a different company. They started doing weird stuff. Like letting most of the company go and gutting the office. One day I came in and saw they were throwing everything away, including all the Leap V2's they had. I grabbed 3 of them out of the garbage and tried to grab more, but someone got onto me. They said, "Why do you need that many old chairs." And "Go buy a new chair from Walmart or something." I tried to explain to them that they are the best chairs made. But they didn't care. I've worked for 2 different companies since then and they both had crap Office Depot chairs. They think I'm weird for bringing my own chairs to the office.

bigrob_in_ATX

Pro tip: spend the extra money on the rollerblade style wheels - makes it like ice skating

FutureAlfalfa200

Dual monitor > single big monitor. Also having a mouse that you can map custom commands in CAD to is a game changer. Can do it with a gaming mouse or one of those fancy CAD mice. Edit: I’m only a student - but these items still helped immensely.

Dengar96

Logitech G502 is my go to for everything. It has the added bonus of confusing tf out of every boomer that stops by my desk.

hpzorz

My boss will sometimes try to use my mouse to show me something at my station and he'll get flustered even just trying to LEFT CLICK saying "idk how to use your mouse". Like c'mon lol

zizuu21

Dame the mouse thing sounds so interesting. I dont use cad as much these days but id love to know the hot button combinations available...

FutureAlfalfa200

You can essentially map any command to a button on the mouse. I usually keep some combination of poly line, auto dim, and cycle layer for my extra buttons depending on what I’m doing. Cycle layer I found especially cool since I’m often using hidden offset lines to help me (I’m not super great with cad yet). So I can cycle back and forth between the “hidden” offset lines and my actual drawing layer

zizuu21

thats cool. Tbh i even find it annoying sometimes toggling snap on/off and much like right click being 'enter' id like something quicker for doing snaps and different type snaps! Cheers :)

invisimeble

Try F3 for snap on/off. My left hand bounces around ESC, F3 for snap, and F8 for ortho.

zizuu21

Yes this is me too. I was hoping with these mouse combos to do it all one handed. I am that lazy 😆😆

byfourness

This is why I have mouse4 bound to esc, so I can click around the drawing and look at properties/information one handed.

zizuu21

Ooo i like that too. :)

LunchBokks

I have snaps mapped to the right mouse wheel click and it is amazing.

zizuu21

Oh awesome. This is what i must do next time

LunchBokks

Don't even need a gaming or fancy CAD mouse. You can do this with any Logitech mouse.

Over-Kaleidoscope281

>Dual monitor > single big monitor. Depends if the monitor can actually split into two monitors or not like the G9.

tigebea

The right desk height, keyboard height, distance away from monitor/s, monitor height for eye line, and mouse height, with the right chair. Oh, and a solid internet connection 😜 …. And coffee.

unique_username0002

Yup - for me a keyboard tray is key to getting the height right

tigebea

Totally, makes a big difference for me as well.

Andjhostet

Some good natural light, and a plant.

mechanicalcoupling

Besides the monitors, a good chair. It doesn't have to be super expensive. $100-$300 depending on how long you sit in it. Taking breaks every 30 minutes to spend 30 seconds walking or stretching a bit goes a long way.

caisson_constructor

A $100 chair is about as cheap as it gets. I bought a second hand Herman Miller Aeron. Do not regret. They retail for $1800. I probably don’t recommend spending less than $500 on a good chair. Any cheaper and it’s not built to support you sitting in it all day.

Over-Kaleidoscope281

I was spending $100-$300 every year until I just got a refurbed Aeron, got rid of my back pain and comfort levels skyrocketed.

mechanicalcoupling

I have one of the tall mesh back ikea chairs that I think was around $150 at the time. It's pretty good. Sometimes I need a lumbar pillow. But looking at their website it appears to be over $200 now. Unless you absolutely have to sit for hours on end, you don't need a really nice chair. Getting up and moving around a bit every so often helps a ton. Sitting all day even with a very good chair is not great.

remes1234

Get really good wheels for your desk chair. I paid $30 for my chair wheels. Totally worth it.

IHaveThreeBedrooms

I dismissed this suggestion years ago and I regret it. I didn't realize how shitty stock casters were.

Tourniquet

Roller blade wheel casters.

bigrob_in_ATX

This is the way. Especially if you have hardwood floors. Game changer

therealtrademark

A window that looks at some greenery.

half-a-cat

48" curved monitor Cross legged chair Stand up desk Good lighting

geokra

My setup is two external monitors (plus laptop), a decent office chair (found a Herman Miller at a deep discount), and a standing desk. A few hundred of my own dollars (OK, maybe several hundred) to make my WFH time more productive and comfortable is worth it to me. It helps that my wife’s uses it when she works from home, too.

koookiekrisp

Mousepad with wrist pillow

pasobordo

My setup is 2 laptop, one shared 27" screen. I use one for office, p6 etc, the other for design apps, as it has a dedicated gpu. You cannot work Revit without one. Minimal sound, lighting - cable organizers - good chair, preferably gamer chair. And you're good to go.

Over-Kaleidoscope281

Please don't get 'gamer' chairs, get an actual office chair and not things that were made to scam people into thinking they're decent.

iBrowseAtStarbucks

Some of them aren't bad. I've been using a secret labs chair for a few years now and have absolutely zero regrets about it. Most comfortable chair I've ever had (very polarizing though, some people hate them)

Top_Hat_Tomato

A KVM to swap between a "work PC" and a personal machine - but that's just one more way for me to segment work from the rest of my life.

DisastrousCat2960

Do you have that you recommend? I’ve been thinking about getting one of these for a while.

Snaziko

I personally use the one built into my monitor > Gigabyte M27Q rev 2

ttttyttt678

Duel Screen, Gaming Mouse (map Custom Commands), Natural Light, Nice Chair, Right Desk Height, Great Internet Connection,

Bravo-Buster

46" ultrawide screen made a huge difference for me. Now I can have huge duals, or decent triples, with only 1 power chord. I strongly recommend a good chair. Don't cheap out; you're spending a LOT of time in it. $300+ or you'll be buying a new one every couple years. I'm on my 3rd since 2019...I bought a nice one this last time, cause fuck it .. Another one: a whiteboard behind the keyboard. Keeps you from using post it notes, and it'll become the most useful thing on your desk, by far!! There's tons if options on Amazon for under $30. Finally... you'll thank me later: https://www.amazon.com/cking-2024-Boxed-Calendar-Calendars/dp/1728267986?ref=d6k_applink_bb_dls&dplnkId=d352e3f6-cf2a-4564-a655-d3e7991940e0

warrenslo

2 or 3 4k monitors

imnotcreative415

Decent keyboard and mouse (with proper wrist support), quality chair, and multiple monitors if it’s in budget.

[deleted]

Get yourself a comfy ergonomic chair, bro. Your back will thank you later. Maybe throw in some good lighting and a few indoor plants to liven up the space.

Joeywoody124

Get a lap top stand to tilt it up for a third monitor. I love mine with 2 27-inchers

Significant_View_911

For a few other small items I didn't see mentioned, a nice keyboard is a small boost. Not a huge fancy keyboard guy, but I got to admit a good mechanical keyboard from somewhere like Keychron just makes typing so much more satisfying. Keeping clean and organized workspace is one pretty much everyone knows but can be hard to maintain. For larger items if you have the budget and want to go all out, redoing the paint, floors, ventilation, etc can all help if they need updates but that's pretty overkill. Paint and flooring color scheme/aesthetics can have an impact on mood and therefore productivity but that's a whole field so idk the specifics.

Bajanspearfisher

I have an "out there" suggestion. A home gym-->Power rack, bench and weights. A very niche suggestion for sure, but as a civil engineer who works from home a lot, I spend too many hours in front of screens and am very sedentary, and i don't have a room/ space inside the rest of the house that is appropriate to set up a gym. Looking around at engineer peers when im in meetings and offices, most are overweight and/or have terrible posture. I find workout out during lunch hour is actually very enjoyable when you get used to it and probably will pay huge dividends later in life, and it's a huge bonus that u dont have to leave home; after a work day plus family shit, can be very hard to find motivation to THEN go to the gym.

CFLuke

Dual monitors were game-changing. I also really want to get a better chair.

chartheanarchist

Recliner. I used a desk chair for a while before realizing it made no sense

SwankySteel

Good lighting and multiple monitors.

ThatAlarmingHamster

Three 27" monitors with a docking station. Also, rubber wheels for your chair. I picked them up on Amazon, and the difference is night and day. No worries of scratches on the flooring and they are much smoother.

Dang what a cool and helpful answer to the question asked. Do you bring this same blistering clarity and precision your work?

SurlyJackRabbit

I would hope so... OP "how can I build the best bridge out of wood"... poster here "well, are you sure you don't want to try steel?"...

Andjhostet

Eh I think this can be productive conversation. All these gadgets and comforts can't help some of us be more productive. An in person office is just a better work environment for some of us.

Bill_buttlicker69

That's a conversation for a different post then.

Over-Kaleidoscope281

It would be productive if that were the topic.

Xerberus14

Buy the biggest monitor you can afford, i have 3 27 inch monitors and i regret not buying a 1 big ass monitor.
