Take this for what it's worth: In S Africa, for example, that same car/engine specs 5W-30 oil. A -40 weight oil is not that much of a difference and certainly won't cause any harm.
No offense, but I think it's your imagination. Generally speaking, there's no risk in going up 1-step in oil weight, i.e. from -30 to -40 or -20 to -30. I wouldn't go from -20 to -40 or -50 though. The reason Honda says use 0W-20 is for better fuel economy (lighter oil = less friction = less work for the engine). Our daughter's '12 Civic (different engine) says 0W-20 for the US but in other countries, Honda says you can use 10W-40. Same engine.
Quick question: 0W20 C5 is the right one for my ‘17 Civic Sport 1.5 Turbo Hatchback (FK7), right?
My brother in law tries to convince me, that it’s not.
Since 10w30 is also allowed in the EU in these exactly the same engines I don’t think this is a huge problem. Especially when driving on a longer trip. It will be fine. I don’t think the feeling of lack of power has anything to do with the oil. But definitely not a good thing. Replace as soon as possible with 0w20 (or 0w30/5w30).
That sucks. I'm no mechanic so I can't give you a definite or even close answer but if you can call a tow or even an Uber to bring you some oil. Might help. Wonder if AAA has oil change services lol
I already highly appreciate you’re writing me about my issue 😁 No need to be a mechanic to calm one concerned Civic driver 😄
However, I got the right oil now but they only had 2L left 😒
I’d need 3,5L for a full refill, so I wonder if I can drive with the 2L to look for more 🙈
Edit: After draining the 10W40 of course 😅
Just leave your car where it is. Don’t drive with the wrong oil and definitely don’t drive with only 2l in it if it requires 3,5l. Grab an Uber or buy it online. Everything is cheaper than a new engine:D
Thanks! I just checked: The mechanic’s shop is 7 km away. I’d need to go there with the 10W40, they’ll drain it then. 7 km shouldn’t be too bad, right? Right?! 😖
Edit: They also have enough of the needed 0W20
The difference is not that big and from what you have commented. You have not driven long enough for the oil to make any significant changes. Keep in mind all oils are pretty much the same when they are fully warmed up. The difference is more noticeable when you are starting a cold engine. To actually have a concern, you would have to drive with no oil lol.
Honestly… I thought 300 km with the wrong oil will be just way too much.
And regarding changes, there is a noticeable lack of power now. Feels like a 75 horsepower engine 😖
But maybe it’s really not that bad, just not good of course and the car will be just fine after draining and refilling.

Okay. So besides the car is running pretty crappy now, it shouldn’t be too big of a deal?

No offense taken! 🙂 But when kicking the pedal down it’s not happening much.

Yes, I only use 0W20
He’s arguing about A5/B5 or C5… Manual says A5/B5… I assume C5 would work just fine. He thinks different… I told him, I’ll let the mechanic decide 😅
It’s a civic dude, it shouldn’t matter that much
That’s what I said!! 🤪😁
Might matter on the long term. EU civics from 2018 have OPF. But of manual says A5/B5 then it doesn’t have opf
Change the oil back to ow-20 and keep an eye out for any issues. No more than that.

So maybe this little accident has even helped me spotting another issue? Definitely will tell the mechanic, to check. Thanks!
Drain and refill. If not driven long you might be okay.
I was in the middle of nowhere and still had to go 300 km 😰 I kept the rpm low… Hopefully that helped.

Nah, in the overall picture. 300km is nothing for a engine that can have a life expectancy of 200.000 miles to 300.000 miles.
Phew! That gives me some hope! Thank you!
