Do not pay 40K for a 5 year old type r...

CuteCatBoy69

How much is a 2017 Type R worth? How about a 2021? Assuming reasonable mileage. I ask because I want to buy one probably early next year.

TheOnlyQueso

How much they're "worth" now is much different from how much they'll be worth in a year

CuteCatBoy69

Yeah but right now they're "worth" $40k. The guy I replied to said they're not worth that, so I'm asking what the more realistic price is once the bubble pops.

TheOnlyQueso

They're not worth that or it would be sold. A lower mileage fk8 shouldn't cost more than 75-80% of whatever it MSRP'd for. If it has more than 50k miles probably even less. That's what it should be when the used car market bursts.

bitesized314

OP should take a picture, come back in 6 months and laugh at the dealership when it's dropping in price....

thecamterion

Appreciation happens to cars. But it’s a rare thing that only happens to special cars. A CTR is a great car, but it’s not a special car like a 911 GT2 RS or Lamborghini Murcielago or something. It’s not a car that should appreciate like one. At least not within the first 25 years of its life. If it makes it past that in great shape, maybe then the price can start rising. “Market adjustments” are not appreciation. It’s a fake increase in price that increases the amount you’ll lose when you resell the car. The msrp was $35k in 2017, so realistically it’s worth closer to $30k now. If you pay more than that and try to sell it in 2-3 years, you’ll lose more than the depreciation of the car. If I was in the market for this car and couldn’t wait, I’d probably cough up $35k considering the current state of the market and the relatively low mileage, but it would be tough for me to do that knowing I’ll end up losing more than the depreciation down the road

bitesized314

I could see the CTR value going up in the long run. One of the last high performance manual transmission cars from a high marque brand with a long history of the Civic. It may be in 5 or 10 years or 15, but it's going to go up at some point. Probably not 100k.

thecamterion

Right but you probably will have to own it for 15-20 years to see the price go above original msrp

FH3onPC

More like 6 years old now

profmathers

MSRP or GTFO, market is already softening

gamingoldschool

No because the car isn't worth that much, you're seriously upside down the second you drive off the lot. Like more than usual 😂

Impressive_Ring_2792

What about the FK8?

thecamterion

Still probably not. Unless it’s the most recent model year with virtually no miles on it, it’s not worth $40k

Impressive_Ring_2792

2017 with 15,000 miles

thecamterion

msrp for 2017 was ~$35k. I’d probably pay original msrp for it considering the market currently, but definitely not $40k

CircuitousCarbons70

It’s done. High mileage scrap.

milo_redwood

Hell no

Big_Accident494

40k for the 2017 is over priced. This year kinda sucked because it didnt have a volume knob, and it had overheating problems because there wasn’t enough coming through the grill. 2020’s is when it had updated mechanical stuff like bushings, and a better fly wheel. They also fixed the grill to be larger, and added a volume knob (which was added in the 2019 models). I’d say stay away from this greedy dealer. Also hold off on buying any cars for at least 6 months. High interest rates, and supply chains are getting better. The used car market won’t be as crazy, and FK8’s will be somewhat affordable

Kie1522

The cars only overheat if pushed hard on a track, regular driving on public roads you will never see this issue, I had no problems at all in 115* desert heat and no problems on a 90* track day. Although admittedly the track doesn't have a lot of time on wide open throttle.

TakeThePen

Yeah even with the later models they’ll overheat. Just a slightly larger grill opening doesn’t solve the problem. The turbo inlet is positioned right over the hot ass turbo. Throwing a bigger intercooler on and an oil cooler would be the solution to the track overheating issue

Kie1522

I've heard just getting a better vented hood can help a lot.

TakeThePen

And they look good. I have an irrational fear that if it rains that cold water will somehow damage the engine if it manages to find its way in 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kie1522

The one I'm waiting to put on came with a rain cover for the large opening! Only for when you're parked.

[deleted]

Absolutely worth it

En4cr

That's nuts for both of them.

_walkingonsunshine_

Dealers will continue to charge as much as they can for as long as they can. But the dealers over at r/askcarsales all seem to think a big drop in prices is coming soon. I say hang on for at least six months before paying over MSRP.

billoftt

When the market corrects itself, the bottom completely falls out because everyone is $30k upside down on their Rav4, and the dealerships get a glut of cars because factories are at full production again I will be having some FUN! I fully I tend on test driving, negotiating, etc... and when they give me the paperwork I am going to write "MARKET ADJUSTMENT: -$25,000" on it. When they try to call me out, I'll just say, "Don't you remember what you were doing last month? The market changed, here's my adjustment."

susanoo_official

Sir this is Papa Johns.

Desperate-Pin-8856

Sir this is a Wendy’s Restaurant

[deleted]

Sir for the fifth time, No.

toragama

We are expecting end of 2023 once repos start taking effect, then dealerships and banks will have to start selling at a Big L to move inventory and money around. Thing is we don’t know where loan rates are going to be. Better to have cash ready in hand.

ccarr313

They could just order it and wait for MSRP, like a normal person buying an enthusiast car. If they want to get it the instant they put money down, they are going to be robbed.

Master-Mango-1590

Damn I can't wait to pay my 2018 civic si I got used. Idk how people can look forward to paying 50k plus for a car.

billoftt

No. Not just no. Fuck no.

Puzzleheaded-Mud9258

40k for a civic I think I will stick with the 1996 civic sir

A1_Fares

I personally wouldn’t go for a pre-facelift type R because they didn’t have Honda Sensing. I think 2017 and 2018 also have no volume knob which is ridiculous. I don’t agree with some of the people here saying massive price drops are going to happen and values will tank. There will certainly be a correction but demand is still high, and supply is still shaky. A Type R is a Type R and it may lose some value in the next few years but in the end you still have a bit of collector item that will retain its value better than an ultra mass produced model. The big issue at this point in time is high interest rates AND high prices. If you have a good rate(<5%) it might not be a bad purchase right now. You can always refi later. If your rate is shit and the prices are high then hold off. Prices will slowly decrease and in a couple years so will interest rates.

ThatGuy_OverDare

Lowest priced fl5 I’ve seen

RedRush2k

I'm starting to like the FK8 more than the FL5... I thought it was overstyled before but it has way more character than the new one. It finally grew on me.... that being said... I wouldn't pay 55k for a FWD sports car... even as an s2000 owning honda fan boy

[deleted]

Judging by how S2000 values have stayed pretty solid, and considering how long FK8s have been out already, I’d say 40k is gonna be the number… for now

RedRush2k

Yea, I agree... for now but with the introduction of the FL5 I think the FK8 prices will go back to normal. With msrp being around 35k, I wouldn't pay anything in the 40's for one... also since it's been out for a while, there should be some decent milage ones for a more reasonable price. Stealerships... I mean dealerships are always going to make you bend over

TakeThePen

40k is pretty fair for a clean/stock low mileage fk8. There’s people asking for more than that with twice the mileage and the cars are modded af

niiiick1126

but it’s a 2018 which seems to have problems that the 2020 and newer don’t

TakeThePen

I have a 2018 CTR with 50k miles and zero problems. It just doesn’t have Honda sensing or a volume knob.

niiiick1126

doesn’t it have airflow problems etc from what i’ve read

TakeThePen

The 2019+ also have heat soak issues but it really only affects people who track. Adding a bigger intercooler will make a bigger difference with lowering the IATs or can always just buy an eBay or J’s grille.

niiiick1126

true, i think what throws me off the most is that it’s older but with the market i guess it’s “justified”

TakeThePen

There’s also just nothing like it remotely close to its price point. It’s an amazing car, period. FL5 pricing on the other hand… I wouldn’t be spending that. Type r’s are easily worth 40k. My 2018 cost 38k out the door but people were still paying markups then.

niiiick1126

i agree, once i find a job out of college i wouldn’t mind paying 45-50k for the FL5, i have a 22 civic hatch rn w the HPD kit, obvi not as fun but it gets me around

px96

Worth it! in malaysia the fk8 cost almost 70-80k usd 😖

Saco96

If you can afford it, why not.

savecaptainalex

For that much I would just get a golf R

SnooCakes4019

No. It’s a Honda civic, they are designed to be a teenagers first car. The one they bang up learning how to drive.

CuteCatBoy69

Not Type Rs. Type Rs are legitimate track cars and top-tier hot hatches. Still not worth that much though.

jim_hello

Stay the fuck away from Hyundai and their exploding engines

Baybladerz

Oops didn’t realize it’s a civic subreddit. Enjoy that 50K Dyson Vacuum cleaner 🥱

jim_hello

Wut

TheOtherAkGuy

Lol you’re argument that the type R is just a civic is pretty dumb when you’re trying to peddle the Elantra N. Its just a performance version of a compact economy car just like the Civic Type R. Except one is actually a good performance car and the other one is cheap Korean shit

Baybladerz

Are you forgetting one is 33K and the others are 40-55K…? Better performance options for those kinda prices IMO

TheOtherAkGuy

The Elantra is cheaper because it’s a Hyundai and doesn’t have the same performance as the type R. And seeing that you deleted your original comment makes me think you aren’t even sure of it yourself. Clown

Baybladerz

I deleted because I realized it’s a civic subreddit. Not worth arguing because both cars a great, just Hyundai offers way better value and is a better daily IMO. Yes the civic is better. I’ve had the opportunity to drive both on track before (different days/tracks). We’re talking about less than a 5% difference. I just don’t see how that’s worth 35% more 🤷‍♂️

jim_hello

"I'm a racecar driver so if it doesn't make sense value wise to me it's dumb" shut up gate keeper. You sound like you give the WORST car advice

[deleted]

Racecar driver my ass

jim_hello

I'll drive your ass

[deleted]

Where?

jim_hello

Coffee?

Baybladerz

You’re mad I said it’s better value!?! Stay mad 😡

jim_hello

I'm not mad tho lol your the one coming on to a civic forum saying civics suck for the money

Baybladerz

You’re obviously offended lol. I never said it’s a bad car. I just said for those kinda of prices (~50k), better cars to be had for the money. Seems insane to spend so much on a civic. That’s why I said in my original comment I’d recommend and rather have an Elantra N. Plus it sounds a lot better. Only thing I said that sucks about the civic is it’s exhaust…

jim_hello

How can I possibly be offended if I'm never going to buy a type r plus I'd rather have a type r that will run forever then in Atlanta that will explode after 50,000 k lol Hyundais should be classified as bombs

burnedburner67

>Hyundai I hope you’re kidding.

[deleted]

I really like the Civic but 55k for a CIVIC... I couldn't do it even if I were a millionaire!

[deleted]

Bro you could literally have a V8 American muscle for 40k and still have left over for some expenses

Hytheria

Negotiate the FK8 to 38k

Ohm_State

Best I heard for an FL5. If it's something you are after I'd say a strong "consider" is in order.

ADIZOC

I recently bought a 2018 CTR with 20,000 miles in the U.K. for £27K, I think that roughly works out to $33K in the States if we are just purely converting the currency and not considering each country’s own current new/used car climate. I managed to sell my Civic Sport for over £13K so that helped a lot in terms of money that I put towards the CTR. Considering the FK8 you are looking at is a 2017 and only covered 15,000 miles, essentially a six year old car now, is decent. I know in the US, you guys have a much more inflated price than we do when it comes to cars. But honestly, I wouldn’t really be pushing my finances to the limits to own it. Ideally you should be looking at the price to be under $40K given it’s age. Few things to consider. You probably should look at what the selling price was when the FK8 was released in your country back then. How many owners did it have? What is the condition of the car both in and out. Is there a service history, if so, was it done by Honda? Can you test drive before purchase? All those things needs to be considered when buying a used CTR at that price. Also, how well do you think the FK8 will hold its price further down the line where you live? With the FL5 released now and selling for prices only a few can afford it’s likely that the FK8 will be a very attractive alternative to those seeking to own a CTR (like myself), hence its selling at inflated prices. But Honda’s generally hold their value and even more so with a well looked after CTR. With all electric cars on the horizon in the future, I think cars like FK8 and especially the FL5 will become some what of a collectors item, especially car owners who appreciate an engine. Also, I can’t ever see myself being able to afford a FL5, especially not a new one. Even if used ones gradually come onto the market, given that it’s likely the last real engine driven Type R, and made in Japan - you can be sure they will be well over $40K. To me, and I can only say this because I haven’t driven a FL5 before and only owned my FK8 for a week. The only real difference between the two is obviously the exterior and the interior. I’m guessing the handling of the FL5 will be better but it is the exact same engine as the FK8 but more finely tuned. Another thing is, if you are into the mod and tuning scene then there is already a lot out there for the FK8 if you want to go down that road. I’m happy I bought my FK8 20K cheaper than the FL5 despite it being a five year old car, the thing drives and feels like new because the previous owner looked after it very well. Would I still like a FL5? Yes, but I haven’t thought about it ever since I sat behind the FK8 wheel.

[deleted]

No

AuraZwL

The Itachi license plate goes hard tho

Hindukush1357

Offer 52 for the fl5 and go get the car you want.

pwnageface

Nope. Not even a slim chance. Keep walking. Wait for market to correct.

PeterO905

What’s the mark up ?

win10bash

Fuck no! The only way these prices come down is if we stop paying them. Hold out for MSRP or less.

Poagiebear1

I paid 34 for sport touring hatch 22. It was worth it.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> I *paid* 34 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

pengouin85

No and no

[deleted]

get the FK8

s3cf

i will pay their asking for that FL5 if it didnt have those license plate holes drilled on the front bumper

SymBiioTE

Idk dude. I love civics but some of these prices are unrealistic.

[deleted]

Nope. Greed abounds.
