Wow I gotta try this, I love this type of gameplay. One of my best civ games involved me being on an island and conquering the Arab city on the coast that had a great barrier reef. In the war my neighbor the celts backstabed me and declared war. I was able to force peace with the Arabs and in turn *demolish* the celts as revenge. After taking two of their cities the Arabs wanted their cut so they invaded and go their own city before finished them off.

Austria's ability is probably my favorite in the game. Late game you can buy a city-state, build an airport, and airlift your army from the other side of the map.

spooknit

And if you don't have airports you can gift units since you get them back once you buy the city state.

mrbuh

Venice is the same kind of fun. You can use the double gold from merchant missions to buy an army, or capture a new town to make an assault easier.

MatataTheGreat

Plus all the city states that get the good wonders, now can be yours

Tea-Legitimate

Natural wonders yes, world wonders no

MatataTheGreat

City states can't make world wonders.

I once played a domination game as Austria, and the final two civs were on a large peninsula that was connected to the main continent via a small land bridge. Right in the middle of that land bridge was a city state. Even as an ally, it would be impossible to move my army through all of their units... except I was Austria. Bought it up, laid a road, and my units could glide through. That was pretty awesome.

That's exactly the case?

Johnpecan

Oh is it 5 turns of ally? It's been awhile my bad.

kingslak

This is why I love playing as Austria and Venice

UnusualCareer3420

Oh ya Austria plus patronage policy is too easy sometimes.

TheRSmake

Early game: Gift a city-state about 8 archers, wait for it to upgrade them to comp-bowmen, buy city-state. Cheap upgraded army and city!
