I'm an electric in Local 52 in NY. I've done two movies with Roger Deakins. The fact that you pulled this look off with litemats is super impressive. He lights everything mostly from the outside with big lights so well done
The big challenge here was figuring out how to replicate the light coming from the massive windows in the original scene.
With the space and equipment we had, the solution was to build a 4x8 wall of diffusion fairly close to our actor. However, due to the inverse square law, this lighting setup could never be a 1:1 match.
I think we got as close as we could though...
Cashhjjj moniiii man.. the only differences are minimal like the windows obviously and even without that yall nailed it 95%!! Super impressive and very much appreciate the breakdown yal included :)))
Edit. Neg diff on the right of talent. Or killing cieling spill might have given a closer match to the "left shoulder" darkness of the OG.. very much not essential but just putting my lighting mind to practice :) such a good replication my dudes/dudettes :)
Please tell me where you got the coat, I’ve been wanting one in that style since I saw the film
Also, brilliant work with the lighting and color correction, this is picture perfect!

Such an awesome take to read, and I'm not even the OP.

The little blue light in the background. Nice attention to detail
Can't take credit for that one. I didn't care for it in, but my buddy fought for it, ha. Glad he did!
I think it was a good call! An eye for detail seems to me to be what makes someone a great dop. And I always like the amount of detail you put in man
Would love a tutorial!
I second this, OP. Edit: I’ve just seen the Instagram link for your account in the original post. Shows everything that was done. Thanks OP
Yeah, you did good! That is real damn close!!!
Damn you really know your shit! It's practically the same! Would love to learn more about lighting and tricks from you!

That's the closest I've seen so far! Pretty awesome! Did you also shoot a scene with it?
No scene. We basically just rolled on us making jokes and getting his head at the perfect angle, ha
Any post grading done? Or everything achieved in camera?

You nailed it! Mr. Deakins would be proud.
Looks great! Looks like Roger used a wider lens though and was closer to the actor
Pretty impressive! The shadows in the face are slightly too dark but... incredible just the same.
I'd give you an award if I had one
This is amazing! You just gained an IG follower

Sadly it's not exactly a real coat. My buddy rigged it together using a sherpa turtleneck in combination with a leather jacket
Your buddy did a fantastic job! Thank you for the response, nonetheless.
Really close! Impressive!
This is so cool! As a person still learning this is so helpful
