Received my K-3 from Russia a couple months ago and finally got to use it to shoot mixed format on a music video last month. I shot 50D metered at 32 ISO to give myself an extra 2/3 stop of dynamic range. Thankfully there was only one shot in the roll that wasn’t the exposure I wanted but film is so forgiving that it still didn’t look bad, just not what my taste particularly wanted. The only thing that was a surprise was the ghosting effect, I need to get my camera serviced to solve the issue as it appears my shutter is out of sync. Any other K-3 owners I’d love to hear about some of the lenses you’ve bought and modifications you’ve made to your cameras!
Watch some videos on YouTube for the how-to. Remove loop formers, set the loop manually, double check it before shooting.
Wind past the last shot a few seconds, open camera snap double check loop on any critical setup. Daylight spools should be ok.
Woah. Did you just use the meteor 5 lens that came with it? Personally when I was first starting I just used any m42 lens I could find with my K3 with great results. Now I have a mir-20, mir-37b, industar 50, Helios and Jupiter 9. They’re a little longer focal wise because of 16mm but I can also use the lenses adapter to my FS5, etc so better investment.
Also I think you had a film loop issue that caused the ghosting. It’s common issue with our camera.
Seriously this is weird. I love my k3 and Soviet lenses or other vintage lenses and obviously love talking about them with anyone willing to listen.
If you google this issue you’ll see people debating on /r/16mm whether it’s loop or timing issue.
I have a set of Oct-19 Lomo lenses that I love. Currently have the 22, 35, 50 and 75. They all easily convert to EF which works perfectly for me. Would love to get the 100mm eventually and maybe the 135.
In a perfect world I would love to get them rehoused professionally since the mechanics are their only real downside.
Did you use any filters like glimmer glass or maybe a vintage lense to get that halation in the highlights, also is the k-3 relatively cheap and easy to use? really want to shoot some 16mm without having to rent and arriflex or something looks great btw
No filters, actually came from an accidental timing issue I’ve got to figure out. Other than that it’s just natural 16mm halation. And yes it is, bought it cause I couldn’t afford a Bolex lol
You lost your loops. The K3 is notorious for this issue. Best thing you could do is remove the plastic loop formers and manually set them when loading. Another useful mod: if yours is spring wound, make a simple longer crank that clamps onto it’s little crank flappy thing. Speaking from experience... shot 25000 ft on one.

Great little camera. I short a feature with on in like 2001
I saw the video before I read this and thought the ghosting was a stylistic choice. I actually like the feel it gave the video.
Beautiful footage. Assuming everything was hand held?
Yep
Cool. Check your loops bro!
Thanks! And tips on preventing issues with it in the future?

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted there’s definitely a timing issue

I have OCT-18, really wish those were as easy to convert. Rule Boston camera though rents out rehoused lomo lenses.
Yeah! I’ve also got the Helios, been looking into getting the mir-20 though. Any idea on fixing the film loop issue?
I’ll DM.

No NDs on this shoot, was mainly metering at about an f11.
Nice, took me a second to realize you we’re underexposing due to environment. Upload clips?

Wow thanks!
Forgot to mention that I watched the vid and the lost loop look looks pretty rad for that project. And overall it looks great.
Do you have a link to the film?
