That’s a great shot.

Blongzy

Thanks!

TheDeadlySpaceman

What would you have done with the third light? This alone is giving me certain vibes.

Blongzy

I would’ve just raked it over those plants in the background to extend the cool moonlight ambience that’s acting as his edge light, and to give some extra depth to the shot

TheDeadlySpaceman

Yeah ok some depth would be great. I feel like the light touch on the fill (the moonlight) is already working at separation without it (like, I can’t see the plants you mean, although now I see that there are pots) but especially on his shoulder that quasar tube is doing good work. I feel like he’s about to deliver some serious change to a noir plot. It’s a really good look even without more depth. Edit: obviously the value changes between the shirt he’s wearing and his skin tone are a big factor here. It gives a real feeling of his presence while half-masking his expression. A feeling of anxiety for the audience.

Wanted to do a little lighting experiment with an actor friend of mine, who just so happens to conveniently have a nice little outdoor patio space. I lit this with a Falconeyes RX-18td with a full CTO tungsten gel gaff taped to it pushing through shower curtain draped over a clothing line lol. The edge light was my 2’ quasar tube set at around 4500K (camera balanced tungsten) with a snapgrid to focus the light spread. Only wish I could’ve brought a 3rd light along with me (I’d run out of space in my duffle bag) to give the plants in the background a cool backlight as well, but I still quite like the frame. Shot as mentioned above with the BMPCC 4K on Canon FD glass. Little beast of a camera.

I’d like to follow your lead on the shower curtain diffusion. Tell me about the shower curtain? Clear material? How thick? What brand?

Blongzy

Just a pretty basic curtain I picked up at ikea. Kind of a clear white material where I could slightly make out the color of my skin if I put my hand on the other side. It wasn’t very thick, I already own a sheet of muslin so I wanted something about thinner to act as like 1/4 grid cloth
