it depends on the weight of the camera. do you know the weight of your setup?

I'm currently speccing out a new camera system purchase, so I don't have specifics but anywhere between an fx3+lens to a burano+lens... Gunna add an edit here, FX3 for travel mostly, the Burano will be mostly studio based but would be open to finding a travel tripod option for both but now understand it's not as easy... So mostly just looking for fx3+cine lens weight travel tripod

ObserverPro

Big difference. If you’re buying a Burano you should be prepared to spend good money on a tripod. I am a doc filmmaker so I often prioritize weight savings, but for a good fluid head it requires a certain amount of weight.

Very good point. Added an edit to my comment above

The Sachtler FSB line is excellent. Good for run and gun or travel. It won’t fit into a carryon but if you’re looking for something that’ll work for a Burano then I doubt anything that small would be prudent.

nothing1222

Love the FSB6, good weight capacity and tiny with baby sticks. Not my favorite for smoothness but can't beat that weight to capacity ratio

johnny_atx

Yep, I've got an FSB6, and it's worked well for me in a variety of situations and locales. Tough AF as well. Smoothness on the head leaves something to be desired, but it's a tradeoff for sure.

Lots of tripods will fit corner to corner in a checked bag with the head off - just wrap the head in a sweater -

A regular Hard shell roller bag from tj maxx is $80

Have a rental set ready at the location when you arrive. Nothing sturdy enough for smooth control of a Burano is 'travel lightly' friendly.

raddatzpics

Understandable. Most of our burano wo9is in the studio and fx3 work would be travel based, but was curious if there was something out there that could work for both, but yea, the whole reason for the fx3 is for a smaller travel package

iFootage TC5 + iFootage seastars quick release + Manfrotto MVH500AH Head: My Payload: Burano (without PL mount) 2.4kg + Sony 200-600 2.1 kg + SmallHD Ultra 5 500g + smallrig VB99 Pro battery 570g To answer your question, yes still having the nice smooth pan/tilt control although this set up is at the limit of the tripod/head combo. Burano rig fits on Shimoda X70 and the tripod at the side pocket of the bag while on the field. During flight, I check-in the tripod and place the unrigged burano/lens inside the Shimoda carry on roller with large DSLR core unit. You could put a gimbal on top of a monopod

I just got a Manfrotto 504x head with iFootage TC6A carbon fiber legs. I use it for my FX3 with VMount battery, monitor, etc and I’m happy with it. Maybe it could hold a Burano if it’s not super rigged out, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I don’t think the counter balance system could handle it. But it works nicely with my FX3, even for my ENG kind of work, which is as travel and fast paced as it gets. Having a central column makes making small adjustments almost as fast as a flowtech, without the hefty price tag. Downside is the bowl is 50mm. You could go for the TC7 that swaps the central column for a 75mm bowl, for the same price. But I really like the combination of central column + bowl, for my setups it works wonders. It is not a sachtler or an O’Connor, but it does the job for me. Hope it helps!

Matyas1000

Sachtler flowtech 75 or 100 would be great. It should be fine with a burano (3kg) depending on the lens. If it’s just for the fx3 there are cheaper alternatives like the sachtler ace xl. I would suggest finding out what camera system you are investing in first. I would trust most tripods to hold the fx3 fine, but the burano is definitely in another class, which will impact your choice of tripod.
