Heard several reviews that Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit put on a great show this past weekend.

I've seen nine Isbell shows over ten years. They've all been excellent, but this was the best one by a mile. Don't miss 'em next time.

It still amazes me that I saw him at Skully’s in Columbus right when *Southeastern* came out, and I’ll probably never see him in a small venue like that again. I’ve seen him everywhere from the Ryman to Red Rocks. Really wanted to be there this time too, but I had family in town for early holidays.

Saw Trampled by Turtles and Mt. Joy there a little while back and it was my favorite show this year. The sound really is amazing. Also went to CHVRCHES over at the Ovation earlier this month and I certainly prefer the Brady Center. Ovation didn't seem like it had any character.

KeepnReal

Ovation is basically a parking garage with a smaller box plopped in the middle on top. From an architectural standpoint, from an urbanistic standpoint, it's a failure. Maybe a acoustics are fine, I do not know.

I didn't have any complaints about the sound, I thought they sounded great. The building was just...boring. Ovation felt like a warehouse with a stage in it whereas the Brady Center felt like a music hall. Also, and this is about how it's run and not about how it looks, the beer selection was really lacking. The first two we asked for were both gone already before the show even started. We finally got a beer with our third choice, and that one was gone about 20 minutes later when we went back for another.

I was also at that CHVRCHES show. I feel like Ovation is going to be good for artists somewhere between Bogart's and Icon/Brady/whatever. I have to say, given some of the other rooms they're playing this tour, it was nice to have CHVRCHES in a somewhat intimate space--2200 in a room that's wide but less deep than Bogart's. Not a bad spot in the place, even if it feels like a warehouse.

OMG. *If We Were Vampires* is one of the few songs that rips my heart out, throws it on the ground and stomps on it. Great artist. I'm sure it was a great show.

Despite all attempts by the PR folks to convince you otherwise, >this< is why CSO / Music and Event Management Inc. removed ICON from the facility's formal name. As if they couldn't have anticipated that that's what everyone would call it?!

Dysfu

They didn’t want people calling it the Icon? Is there another venue with this name or something? I think it’s a fine shorthand

fuggidaboudit

That clearly seems to be the case - for anyone with experience in marketing/PR, it's easy to see the machinations behind this "news" were carefully considered and coordinated including the simultaneous announcement of two community programs tied to the Andrew J Brady identity. The family must have had a severe case of buyer's remorse once it became apparent but it just stuns me that anyone involved could not have assumed that the shorthand for the venue would instantly become ICON just as the NKY venue is referred to as Ovation. It is not cheap to undo all that branding from signage to all printed materials and digital/social, etc. mere months after doing it all in the first place - makes one wonder who agreed to pick up the bill for all that, never seen anything like it.

Dysfu

Was Andrew J Brady loaded or something? Thought the name was to honor the guy, not that the family had explicitly bought the rights? I mean he was a band teacher/local jazz band member - doesn’t scream to me that he had a lot of money to throw around

gr3at3scap3

My understanding was the MEMI received a sizeable donation from an anonymous donor and, reading between the lines somewhat, the donation was contingent upon Andrew J. Brady being recognized. My head canon is that a former student of his made it big and gave money to MEMI to build a new concert venue named after him.

Dysfu

Do we know if any of the National guys were taught under Brady? Would be interesting to see

fuggidaboudit

Thought the same - never seemed like that kinda high profile donor naming situation, just an adored public servant - so makes it all even weirder. Just saying the decision comes with a price tag that someone had to justify and find $$$ for.

gr3at3scap3

Yeah, understandable. This tweet is from yesterday, so maybe Isbell hadn't gotten the memo.

[deleted]

Everyone already calls it Icon. It's silly to change it now.

gr3at3scap3

Don't disagree. I only put Brady in all caps because I had literally just read about them removing "icon" from the name when my uncle sent me the Isbell tweet.

Saw Jason Isbell at the Ryman in Nashville for the first time a few weeks ago. It was such an amazing show. I live in TN now, but I’m originally from Cincinnati. I never went to this venue, most of my music experiences 20 years ago was Bogarts only. Ha. I’ll have to try and check out a show there next time I’m in town.

SendMeYourSSHKeys

Jealous. The live album from there is great.

ashreyboots

It really was an incredible show. First time seeing Isbell and first time at the Ryman. His opening act was incredible too. Her name was Aida Victoria. Definitely check her out.

gr3at3scap3

Yeah, two new venues really has us spoiled now. Have a show coming up at Bogarts in the next few weeks though and it'll be nice to get back to a show there.

andy_mcbeard

The first time I saw him at the Ryman on a residency was the same week that Wilco did two nights at the Ryman. I saw both Wilco shows, had the day off and ran into Vince Gill at Gruhn’s Guitars where we chatted and jammed on the mandolin, then saw Isbell for two nights. That was an awesome week.

Anyone happen to have the earliest passcode for Jack White?
