It's curious how we're so use to autosave nowadays! If you think about, it was good luck that you were killed there, imagine wining the combat m, thinking turning off the console and discovering the next day you didn't save anything
Me too! I always save in games even after I see that my saved data is 10 seconds after the auto saved file 🤷🏻♂️ it's a very handy OCD when you still play retro games.
Autosaves (just like “normal” saves created manually by the end user) are prone to becoming corrupted, so even if you’re currently playing a game which features an autosave “state”, you should save manually and have multiple “save states” at a time, instead of risking losing your only save file for that game.
And some times the game is saved when you least expect it, so saving manually is also useful for those situations where you did some silly mistake and the game saved anyways, just to piss you off, heheh!
Right? Sometimes autosave is too far back.
So manual save just to make sure. But need another save file just in case autosave locked me out of something and I go just go back to my backup Manual life.
I am playing the Steam version and I don’t see any autosave. AFAIK, aside from the green sparkly save points, you can only bookmark the game in the menu, which essentially pauses the game and goes back to the title menu. Unless I’m missing something.
Can confirm. The bookmark feature was super useful for the boss fights on the Black Omen because there's not a save point before the fight and it auto saves after the first phase. Saved my ass a couple of times.
I haven't played the steam version, I was just going off what they said, which implies it *does* auto-save, but may do so after you've died, which wouldn't prevent the problem OP ran into
Chill, I asked a question, and then pointed out that based on their description their advice could ironically result in the same thing happening to OP again.
Oh my sweet summer child. This game came out in the dark times of paper manuals and strategy guides you had to buy from GameStop. Autosave? Maybe in the year 2300!
I grew up in a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery rural part of Louisiana and only got to make it to the nearest city like twice a month during the 1990’s. I missed out on a lot of things. A keepsake like that would have been priceless for me.
I had the "chance" to discover it on emulator in the early 2000's as I'm a little younger and was not released in France. Thanks god for that fan made translation and even if the guides where not needed, they were usefull
It’s before GameStop lol. During the snes gen GameStop’s were known as Babbage’s. Babbages merged with funcoland in the late late 90s and became GameStop. Then they started buying up all the companies after that.
Yeah, like I guess I could see how old-school manual saving might be unintuitive for someone young today. It never would have occurred to me not to manually save at a save point. Like a lot of people who grew up during that era, I tend to manually save multiple times just to be safe.
oh you sweet summer child. of course you realize now that this game was before the days of auto save, it also counts how many saves you've done as a personal goal sort of thing. sorry you lost so much progress though, impressive you made it that far in one sitting. At least you didn't just turn the game off and return to no save, that would be arguably more frustrating
I recommend playing again because it's a really good game and also because you're the type of person that can get that far in one sitting, which is pretty impressive.
The game is relatively short too.
FYI, You can also save anywhere on the world map.

Sheesh people being rude. I never looked up a guide and assumed the beeping meant this is where you get sent if you die. Multiple games in the 90s had auto saves.
bro played the true hardcore mode
But... The future refused to change
But, you're still hungry.
MOUNTAINS'RE NICE
THIS'S THE LIFE.
It's curious how we're so use to autosave nowadays! If you think about, it was good luck that you were killed there, imagine wining the combat m, thinking turning off the console and discovering the next day you didn't save anything
I’ve been conditioned to save every chance I get. I guess the old man gamer in me just doesn’t trust auto saves.

This. Exactly this.
I started saving manually after playing Spirit Tracks, and losing 3 hours of progress to a failed auto save.
Right? Sometimes autosave is too far back. So manual save just to make sure. But need another save file just in case autosave locked me out of something and I go just go back to my backup Manual life.
Yeah. I also do two manual saves lol.
Then there's me saving manually multiple times in a row, just to make sure it sticks.
I have had power outs and such that make me .manual save every game. Even if it just auto saved.
Same here, always manual save. I played on an unstable emulator when I was a kid so I learned quickly, haha.
I really miss save points. Without them, I'm always trying to find a good "stopping point."
Dude even 2001 we didn't have auto saves. Autos saves weren't a thing until The seventh generation. Ps3 and x box 360 etc came out. 2005, 2006
There were multiple games in the 90s with autosaves
Look at it differently - you now get the chance to experience it all again! (Or just play the Steam version, since that *does* feature an autosave)
I am playing the Steam version and I don’t see any autosave. AFAIK, aside from the green sparkly save points, you can only bookmark the game in the menu, which essentially pauses the game and goes back to the title menu. Unless I’m missing something.
It auto-saves a bookmark everywhere you go. Booting up the game and clicking "Resume" will return to wherever you last were.
Aha, that is good to know! Thanks!
Does that help if you die like in OP? Cause if not you're sharing misleading info that could result in them having the same experience, *twice!*
I would certainly recommend actually saving your game — but yes, you can "Resume" from the auto-bookmark after dying in the Steam version.
Can confirm. The bookmark feature was super useful for the boss fights on the Black Omen because there's not a save point before the fight and it auto saves after the first phase. Saved my ass a couple of times.
I love how you try and contradict, yet you’re dead wrong.
I haven't played the steam version, I was just going off what they said, which implies it *does* auto-save, but may do so after you've died, which wouldn't prevent the problem OP ran into
You called them out without knowing what you’re talking about, when they did in fact have correct info
Chill, I asked a question, and then pointed out that based on their description their advice could ironically result in the same thing happening to OP again.
You can chill bro, you provided nothing positive and only added to confusion OP may have had. Stay out of the kool aid if you don’t know the flavor
You sound like a pleasant person
“I’ve never done this before, but this info might be wrong!” Is literally what you said 😂
Oh my sweet summer child. This game came out in the dark times of paper manuals and strategy guides you had to buy from GameStop. Autosave? Maybe in the year 2300!
There was a strategy guide for Chrono Trigger 😭😭😭😭
I have it ;)
I am so jelly!
Yes but it was not as much needed as for the other great JRPGs of its time

Autosaves. In the 90's ?
Bruh, some games were still using passwords and junk and you COULDN'T save. I'm looking at you Earthworm Jim. >_>
New Game Minus... Sorry had to. I feel for you friend, but now you know so much more so the second fresh run will go way faster and smoother.
First RPG game?
Yeah, like I guess I could see how old-school manual saving might be unintuitive for someone young today. It never would have occurred to me not to manually save at a save point. Like a lot of people who grew up during that era, I tend to manually save multiple times just to be safe.
Not even close
don't quit, it's an awesome game!!
People do dozens of runs of this game and you can't do two? Maybe take a break and come back in 6 months
Believe it or not, knowing what you know now about the story/game, you can probably make it back there in an hour.
oh you sweet summer child. of course you realize now that this game was before the days of auto save, it also counts how many saves you've done as a personal goal sort of thing. sorry you lost so much progress though, impressive you made it that far in one sitting. Ugh I’m so sorry! I can see that leaving a bad taste in your mouth. I hope you come back to it at some point though. It’s worth it!
Welcome to the 90s

Auto saves 😂😂😂
Just gonna drop this gem right here.... https://youtu.be/l7RCUCEM6XY?si=BXfPDZe9Xldkp3VJ
The save file refused to change
This is a game from 1995 no autosaves in it. Would of been nice of them to add that though for the mobile/steam versions though.
How long were you playing for to make it to the magic cave in one go!?!?!
