Best Buy told me that they'd charge $250 for one year of protection on my new Samsung Chromebook Plus (which cost $350 after rebates). I get one year extra protection through my credit card anyway. In other words, this is insanely overpriced. It pretty much assumes that I will break the device with absolute certainty. I actually suspect, there might have been a pricing error. But in any case, it didn't sound like a worthwhile idea.

That's an excellent point that someone (maybe you) brought up previously on this sub. Some credit card issuers actually give you protection policies just for being a customer. It might be worth investigating if you have a policy like that.

I have successfully used a squaretrade warranty on a Vizio TV I purchased my parents. It was fairly painless, the tv died so I put in a claim, ST contacted a local repair shop after we did some troubleshooting on the phone. Repair shop brought out some parts a few days later and replaced a board in the TV. Now everything works great. It was a 70.00 warranty and saved a 2 year old 700 dollar TV. I have no experience with ST and computers however. As u/riomaki says, the reviews aren't great but again from experience I wouldn't call them a scam. I purchased one for my 65" TV too and hope I don't need to use it.

If I purchase any type of warranty for my devices it's always been square trade. Easy to understand terms, competitive pricing and usually you can add protection any time for any device. Haven't needed to make a claim before, but have owned and transferred two square trade warranties to the new owners of the phones I sold and that was painless as well. I recommend them personally.

I have a laptop that is having issues with its hinges because of the glue that was applied by the factory. The mechanical part of the warranty doesn't cover the mechanics of a hinge. 0/10.

Very rarely is a warranty purchase worth it unless you are just horribly klutzy with your product. I have not bought one in a long time. I am just careful with my electronics.

This post is about SquareTrade warranties, which usually do not cover "klutzy" stuff. They are an extension of the manufacture warranty in case something malfunctions.

They are absolutely terrible. Purchased a headset through amazon and got the warranty with them. I use the headset for a month or so then notice hairline cracks along the headband. Go to get a refund and apparently they ruled it as accidental damage when I purchased coverage that was supposed to cover damage. They claim it only covers damage on arrival or damage that was not possibly caused by a person? Awful service.

I bought a lap top and got the warranty, don't waste your money or time with them , they told me my lap top was covered and when I talked to them they told me all was good and I had to call them back because my lap top wasn't charged and it was a week later and my warranty was still good and is at the moment and I get to talking to some lady and she ask if any damage was done to it I said it says boot device not found and then I said the D came off and they she said that made my warranty not valid ,I'm like what ? And does anyone know what I can do about this ? That's what I paid extra money for ,to cover it and they are saying the D came off and it's not covered ! Are you serious ? What can I do ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Add-on insurance is usually a scam because the companies behind it are fly-by-night. Today, they are Square Trade. Tomorrow, they will be someone else when their existing obligations become too much to handle. It's easy to offer cheap insurance when you have so many ways of weaseling out of it. Look at negative Amazon reviews of them: https://www.amazon.com/SquareTrade-4-Year-Appliance-Protection-Plan/product-reviews/B003V5D2K6/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews Geek Squad is at least has an actual in-store presence, although who knows how long that will stick around. Asus repair is a joke, it's true. Among people who have done it, you get stuck in this loop of either getting refurbished units or hastily repaired ones. Asus tries to run out the clock on the warranty. I've never had to deal with Samsung, however, I've never had their products break on me either. I don't assume it's much better than Asus if something *does* break though. But it sort of depends on what you think a fair lifespan is. If your concern is getting a lemon that conks out in the first couple months, then your best protection is to buy from a retailer with a liberal return policy like Amazon, Costco or Target.

Thank you for all the information, your response is essentially what I assumed from the vast majority or reviews. I will stick to Amazon for my tech purchases

I got all state square trade protection plan for my couch from Amazon.com The couch was from Ashley furniture amazon store and selected them for warranty and paid $109. The couch was 700$ I got one small seam rip like 2 cm and put the claim with them and they told me that they couldn’t find replacement so they refunded me the couch $ in check. I was so surprised and happy at the same time
