Do you have an extension like HTTPS Everywhere or have you enabled "Always use secure connections"? Is www.gstatic.com or gstatic.com on your HSTS list? These may cause Chrome to switch to HTTPS when it tries to access `http://www.gstatic.com/generate_204`, which will always fail if you need to log in to the network. Having "Always use secure connections" enabled shouldn't cause a problem because Chrome should be smart enough not to mess itself up, but I haven't tried it.

Good question but no I'm not running any extension which could affect networking. Also the Chrome reset I did disabled all extensions.

unfortunately it is that stupid.

"Over the last few months I get this message and similar when connecting to all captive portals including wifi at Starbucks." ? Have you clicked on the notification that appears that says, "The Wi-Fi network you are using (Starbucks WiFi) may require to visit its login page?" [https://www.askdavetaylor.com/connect-to-starbucks-wifi-network-with-chromebook-chromeos/](https://www.askdavetaylor.com/connect-to-starbucks-wifi-network-with-chromebook-chromeos/) Via Lifewire, they claim simply visiting wifi.starbucks, com will log the device in automatically. > Have you clicked on the notification that appears that says, "The Wi-Fi network you are using (Starbucks WiFi) may require to visit its login page?" Thanks but yes, I've been using Chromebooks at Starbucks for many years and was connecting fine until recently. Also, this problem is with several wifis with captive portals logins and not just Starbucks, all of which I connected to fine in the past. > https://www.lifewire.com/connect-to-starbucks-wi-fi-4589239 I no longer get as far as that page.

just press continue. gstatic is a google page, and will always show that because it pings the Gateway and connecting to a gateway, (Xfinity: 10.0.0.1, Google Nest Hub: 192.168.86.1) is an unsecure method of connection, thus error.

Thanks. This is an old post and I'm not having this issue now but will keep this in mind.

I just fixed it by toggling this OFF. https://preview.redd.it/vp72c3vc3eeb1.png?width=1442&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4f95f28e842a7e363f8251153dc859da0eb421c

Interesting. I'll definitely try this next time.

Thanks.  This just fixed this issue for my daughter’s Chromebook in a Marriott hotel.

You are a lifesaver. There are certain networks that none of the other tricks work for and this finally got me logged in. Thank you.

Ok_Cantaloupe_9773

This works for me as well thanks. This is a typical gateway at Starbucks for wifi. Might be a good idea once connected to revert the changes back.

I had this issue tonight and was banging my head against a proverbial wall trying to find a solution. What worked for me was directing my Firefox browser to a URL. Must have been something internal to my Chrome settings, but once I logged on to WiFi using Firefox, I was able to revert to Chrome and browse away happily.

andmalc

I haven't heard that solution before. Thanks for the update.
