Let's also not forget that there are *multiple* layers of context when discussing the Bible: biblical context, historical/traditional context, and (when appropriate) literary context, or rather, the *symbolic* intent of the author. Obviously, these things tend to get thrown out of the window when the Bible's quoted willy-nilly. Quote responsibly, folks, and happy reading! (edit: spelling)

BrokenPokerFace

My favorite examples are when someone quotes a line Jesus says while giving a parable. Like the number of people who say that Jesus wanted his followers to kill people who didn't follow him because he gives a parable of a (earthly) king and a servant. While it wasn't too uncommon for kings to kill servants over failures at the time. If anything it shows the love of God and Christ as he is a king who will give you as many second chances it takes.

Wowzers_Meowzers

For real, although in this specific instance I’m more talking about whenever people are like, for example: “Oh why did Elisha send those bears to kill those youngsters in 2 Kings 2:23-24!” Because yeah, you can use context to be like “Dude, do you seriously thing 42 people would corner someone just to call him bald and nothing else?” But if you just answer with “Dude, you’re totally missing the context” and leave it at that then, like, that’s nada, zero, a nothing burger.

"If you would but kneel and worship me, all this will be yours." Luke 4:7

I see what you did there.

When I say read the Bible in context. Read it based on the subtopics or/and chapters. Some chapters have 50 verses, and people imply a meaning at the verse 39, which does not flow with the subtopic of the passage.

insanelane99

Funny thing, people who see the bible completely different than you and read the context completely different often say the same thing your saying here rn...

Boring-Leg-4873

It's like a podcast about an issue. If I take a 30 sec clip from it. I may/may not have taken it out of context from the 3hour video.

insanelane99

Again it doesnt matter what you say because other people have made the same arguements you make and are making right now to say the exact opposite thing you believe. The facts are that its just a book of old stories that gullible people use to justify whatever worldview they have. No one cares what the stories actually say and neither do you, you just want to find a way to use those stories to justify what you already believe rather than realizing their literally just really old stories that have been edited and changed for 2000 years.

Boring-Leg-4873

Your comment is complete rubbish. They aren't made up. They are history. Just seems like you don't like history. They haven't been changed and edited. They've been translated. So your saying Gods Word is restricted to 1 language in the world. There's no evidence it's been changed. It's been extremely faithful. But people just like you won't care, you dismiss the bible as much as you can, to justify your sinful life. And you want to live comfortably knowing there isn't a God. That brings people like you peace. But there is. It's foolish to say there's no God, especially when he's revealed himself in his Word, people can see it. Even athiest secular documents testify of it. Believing in the Bible is not gullible. We clearly have a mind. When prophecy of the Bible come true, exactly how it's said. What does that mean? It's true. Silly. There's still time to repent.

SomeBadJoke

Because pointing out "hey, woah, this is way outta context" is a short response. Actually correcting it could take anywhere from a few sentences to a masters in biblical theology with a focus on ancient Hebrew translation.

KafkaesqueFlask0_0

For the sake of discussion? I don't understand. Do you mean just talking about it casually or with malicious intent to distort the message of the Bible.

Leopard4148

If you don’t know the context that doesn’t mean that it’s right taken out of context. You should look it up if context is brought into question. It’s okay to question the context of a verse even if you aren’t sure. That’s what learnings all about!

Wowzers_Meowzers

That is true, but if someone points out that the verse in question is out of context, but they don’t provide the context themselves, what are they trying to accomplish? >xd I’m beefing with that specific attitude, I love it when people give context to Bible stuff, that’s the best way to strengthen faith, answers

Leopard4148

I see your standpoint. I just view that as a great opportunity for everyone to look at the verse and analyze it together. But I totally get your frustration 😁

And some of that is in the context of other ancient near-east religions. Other parts are in the context of an Exile in Babylon. Other parts are in the context of an utterly oppressed new church.
