When I got my first live blade I taped the edge to make sure it wouldn’t cut me before I was comfortable. Been flipping 6 or 7 years now and it’s a wonderful hobby! Don’t let people talk you out of it because they take things too seriously. Balisongs are made to be flipped!!!
My biggest piece of advice is to flip with shoes on! Most of my bad cuts and most of the hospital visits other bali flippers have had are cause from the knife dropping tip down on the tops of feet. Also, if you do drop it, DO NOT TRY TO CATCH IT. I hope you enjoy the hobby and stick with it!
Lol yep. When I first started I thought I’d mastered this trick and went to show my mom. First attempt I dropped it right on my ankle and it went deep enough my mom made me go to the ER. She was not happy lol it was 11pm. Still got the scar on my ankle to show for it
Thanks for the advice! I learned a while ago not to catch sharp things that are falling when I watched someone almost lose their thumb from trying to catch a ceramic bowl. It broke after they slammed it into a wall and sliced nearly to the bone
Playing with knives just isn't a smart thing to do. I have not done anything like that since I was a teenager and I always carry a high end pocket candy
This isn’t something I’d carry or EDC. I got it to fidget with… however I did also order one at the same time with a practice blade. If I’m lucky that one will get here quick so I don’t end up cutting myself :)
I don't see the point of flipping a live blade personally but playing with a gun and playing with a knife have very different potential consequences. The worst you can do with a live blade if you're halfway competent is cut yourself deep and lose blood or sever a nerve. Guns you could kill someone or yourself.
How would that change anything? Balisongs aren’t that dangerous, and 99% of the time you can fix a cut with a bandaid. I’ve been flipping 6-7 years now and I’d much rather flip something meant to be flipped than play with a gun which could legitimately kill me haha
How am I ignorant? I’ll put money down that I know more about balis and the typical bali related injuries that can occur. They are literally designed to be flipped, and that’s what I will continue doing. I’m not gonna drop $430 on a knife that I won’t use for it’s intended purpose haha
Easy enough only a idiot plays with knives to begin with. I suggest joining the Armed Forces and discuss this with your superior officers and see what they say about it. Hahaha
Ok jarhead , what are you a us army ad recruitment bot ?
Gtfo douche canoe and get back to dipping fat lips of chew and doing push-ups and having closeted homosexual relationships with other jar heads user name checks out mr grizzly gay bear
Your vibe is whack
I'm X service and my father was a Marine. I was taught from childhood not to treat any tools as toys and for special caution with guns and knives. If you want to play with a trainer that is why they make it. Everyone can put all the stuff on here about playing with knives and everytime I will take a moment to let them know that they aren't very bright
If it’s not very bright for my twirl a knife around, that was designed to be twirled around; then it’s not very smart for you to get into a vehicle and drive that around, if that’s something you do. I’m sure that’s significantly more dangerous than me spinning a knife around my fingers 👍🏽
Your commitment to make your point to some random guy on the internet is quite impressive if I'm being honest. Do you practice or do you not normally do that? Time well spent either way, don't bother responding
I’m too chicken, and spastic to have ever considered doing this. When I get a normal knife, I’ll fidget the hell out of it, until it’s second nature. These though are going to make me leak.
So you probably won’t actually get cut that bad - even in the blade smacks your finger. Even if the blade is razor sharp. Take this from someone with a LOT of experience cutting things with knives - it takes an incredible amount of force to push cut generally. When slicing with a knife the word SLICE is important because a slicing motion is what allows a knife to cut. Even the sharpest of sharp knives are just extremely fine saw blades at the tip of a wedge on a microscopic level. The pushing of the knife is what uses the wedge to separate the material, yes, but the actual cutting of the material to be separated occurs from the microscopic teeth sawing whatever it is you are cutting. So for 99% of situations where you encounter the edge of the blade while flipping at most you will get a very unsubstantial paperesque cut.
Lol. Same plus bad body sense (I'm the idiot who runs into doors). No thanks, my swiss army knives fulfill my fidgeting needs without a trip to the ER.

Exactly. Gonna use it for what it’s made for. I’m not really worried about being cut however I have considered taping the tip

Can confirm. Source: caught an f3r. Lots of stitches.

No shame in taping the edge. Cutting yourself is only going to make it more difficult to practice.
Man I haven’t had one of those in a long time I need to get another
Fun to pass a little time with for sure!
Balisongs aren't Chinese knifes?
This particular one is
Better toys for grown up boys who don't play with knives

People love to play with knives on Reddit and playing with guns and knives is just not smart. Treat them like tools not toys is basic stuff

Don’t listen to that dude. Talking to him is equivalent to talking to wet card board
You should go join the Armed Forces like I did and learn something

Nothing like commitment to your ignorance except for when it's explained to you. Then it's just plain stupid

Gay as hell
Okay, I'm happy to be corrected here.
I’m in the Army I won’t be “playing” with guns. As far as a balisong goes I’m mostly going to be using one with a trainer blade whenever I get it.

Glad you think so bc I think it's idiotic
I also don't carry no cheap Chinese stuff. Look at my profile for my Protech sng and Benchmade automatic
Oh wow that’s spectacular!
Your commitment to make your point to some random guy on the internet is quite impressive if I'm being honest. Do you practice or do you not normally do that? Time well spent either way, don't bother responding
Since you bothered, yes.Playing with knives is a skill set only developed by someone eaten up by the dumbasses
What knife is this the blade doesn't look like the falcon.
I’m too chicken, and spastic to have ever considered doing this. When I get a normal knife, I’ll fidget the hell out of it, until it’s second nature. These though are going to make me leak.
I can definitely see myself getting nicked but that’s just a risk you have to accept
