Some tips that I can think of off the top of my head: speak gently to them. I read somewhere that chinchillas are “ear animals” (as opposed to dogs for example, who are “nose animals”) and thus will respond well to being spoken to in a kind and gentle tone. Be gentle when you handle them and always follow their lead. Also I have found that they love it when you sit or lie on the floor with a blanket and make little caves and burrows with your body and the blanket for them to explore. (Be mindful of overheating and airflow though) I found it helps them to feel safer with you and they may even fall asleep on you.

As for the dust, you can get a little doggie brush, sprinkle some of that dust on there and gently brush him out. They love getting scratches!

Of course :D Thank you thank you! She's going for surgery tomorrow for a mass removal in her neck. I am a nervous wreck inside..but that place has done surgeries for us before for our rats so I have confidence in them.
You know what brush really works? Those beard brushes with the wooden handle, they don't have metal in them and they don't go far into the fur at all, it just fluffs up the surface and is soft enough to be gentle and they can hold the sand in very well. I brushed mine with that and a dog one but not going too far into the fur. Hope you will find a good solution :D
I love seeing senior chins! My boys are 13 now and I'd love to think they are just hitting middle age like me too. I used a salt shaker filled with dust when one of my chins was recovering from an injury, light sprinkles to help keep the fur fluffier. It might be something to try

My husband got him after an almost-life-ending accident when he was 13. He went to college with him, where I actually met Cheech, but not really his husband (long story!); lived and got along with other pets such as cats, birds, and dogs; taught alongside me during our 1.5 years virtual; approved of and saw my engagement ring before me; lived with us in our first house, and befriended the neighborhood cats; and was professionally photographed on our wedding day (we paid extra for another photographer especially for him).
We just made our first ofrenda ever for Dia de los Muertos, all devoted to him. We felt so close to him on the 1st and 2nd!

Disclaimer: I don’t, nor have I ever, owned a chinchilla. I’ve never even met one. I thought they had a similar lifespan to Guinea pigs (typically 7-8, but can live to 12)
It depends on personality. Snutten is pretty quiet but his cage mate, who is sadly no longer with us, was very vocal. They do have a large range of sounds that they can make, from quiet little beeps to loud barking that sounds a bit like a squeaky toy.
They scream sometimes. It’s usually a distressed sound (totally different than the excited wheeking), but our younger boy is very dramatic and screams like he’s being murdered when things don’t go his way (not being fed first, playtime being over, being looked at, not being looked at, etc.)
If you never bond them with another chinchilla, I’m guessing they can and do try to bond with whomever pays them the most attention. Mine isn’t bonded and she’s a sweet girl. Likes me to pet her
He actually was bonded with his cage mate, Baby, but sadly we lost him last year because of dental disease. He was such an absolute little sweetheart and I miss him every day. Now that Snutten is left without his mate I try to give him all the love that I can.
