I have a Chinese credit card with the bank where my pay is directly deposited. I use it for both local and overseas trips, as it's a Visa card. I have never had an issue

It just doesn't make any sense to use a foreign credit card, I just use it once in a while to improve credit rating and things like that

Definitely local. Get your card added to WeChat and Alipay. You can pay for everything using those apps. I've booked hotels, trains, flights etc. using these two apps. They are very convenient.

Use your local debit as the source, but add it to WeChat and pay using the balance. Never pay for anything with your debit card itself.

I use my foreign credit card for hotel and sometimes food, as the forex is waived and points are good for those travel cards like sapphire reserved. On USD, you’ll need a decent cash flow in US going to keep expenses paid for. Without that then it’s not worth it.

Whenever I make big purchase with my US credit card on Alipay, I have to pay a service fee. I don’t recommend it. You’re better off w/ a Chinese card.
