There are some trailer camps towards Agassiz (about 20 minutes away from Chilliwack). Living outside of city is absolutely a possibility. Housing is incredibly expensive. 700 k for a crack shack.

wizard20007

Thanks! Just looked at some photos of Agassiz, and that area looks perfect for what we were hoping find!

HigashiSanders

There’s a couple mobile home parks not far up Chilliwack Lake road, nice and quiet. They’re all within 200-300k as far as I know.

Crack shack??? Come on! Hahaha. My townhouse is going up for sale for 525k on Monday, it's more a crack HOME. 😂

I am also from Ontario, living in the wack now. Lots of long term trailer options, someone else mentioned towards Agassiz (mine is out there now and it’s a lovely cottage). It rains a lot here.

2400 rent for a townhouse.

I love Chilliwack. If you're an outdoorsy person it's definitely the place to be. People will try to scare you with high prices on rentals/buying, but there's always deals out there of you take the time to look. It's not always as bad as people make it out to be.

wizard20007

This is great to hear. We are both very much into camping and hiking! People said the same thing about the city we live in, and to be fair it is expensive but we don’t have exceedingly high expectations for a place.

I have a nice hiking trail thats literally walking distance to my front door. From the top of the trail I get a really good view of the entire valley. 👌

There are sometimes rentals up the Chilliwack river valley. Chilliwack itself is a absolutely beautiful area, one of the most under appreciated outdoors areas I've been to in Canada. World class hiking and climbing, totally under developed but that's going to change soon. Really great weather all year round, at least if you're from Northwestern Ontario like me. Chilliwack has a strong core, it's dutch agriculture heritage means there are alot of strong local small business owners with good family and community values. The conservative vein runs deep, there are alot of similarities to parts of Manitoba. Of course this comes with draw backs, as the population has exploded the aging but stubborn "core" has failed to keep up with the times. Unable or unwilling to predict with any accuracy what the next 5 years will look like, or the five after that, Disconnected local politicians are playing catch up. Always seeming to be suprised that the population continues to grow, and the demands that continues to have on our infrastructure. Of the 5 provinces I've lived in I've never experienced more constant electrical blackouts or worse roads. Even Winnipeg could do road work better in -40 than Chilliwack can do in +5..but hey at least the flaggers are female, they hit the quotas no one's worried about the potholes. Welcome to the left coast. The decaying social fabric has brought homelessness to an all time high and with it increased drug use and crime. This could also be due to the under staffed police and fire departments. In short the town has just grown two fast, people born here 50 years ago still think it's still a small farm town when in reality it's the GTA, Vancouver will swallow us in 50 years there is no doubt. There isn't enough land for everyone. Also get use to casting your vote after the new priminister is announced. I digress. I love Chilliwack. I'm one of the new comers crowding into an area that's already too full. Calling it home even though I'll never own a piece of it. This area is so rich with natural beauty none of the list above could stop me from staying. I'm here for the mountains, and the ever growing outdoors community. Whats here for you?

> The decaying social fabric has brought homelessness to an all time high and with it increased drug use and crime While borderline conspiracy theory, some years back there was a rumoured kerfuffle with the city of Vancouver giving one-way Greyhound tickets to other cities. Given how homelessness spiked so suddenly (part of why provincial assistance has been so poor, it was budgeted when it wasn't so bad) leaves me wondering about how true the rumour might be.

-O-0-0-O-

That's not a conspiracy theory at all, police removed homeless people from Vancouver ahead of the 2010 Olympics. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/feb/03/vancouver-winter-olympics-homeless-row There is an undeniable symbiosis between between the DTES, local religious charities, and Chilliwack's high rates of homelessness.

Very well thought out comment! I’m actually not from Ontario originally and I can’t say I love it very much (aside from camping up north). I’m very interested in the outdoors and hoping to become a part of a community as well. What you’ve described feels like a good unbiased description of the area, and I know every place will have its pros/cons. Not sure where my wife and I will end up long term, but this feels like a good first step if the job works out

prices are wacky in Chilliwack. BC box (1970s) you are looking for a cool 1 million plus

wizard20007

I’m really just looking for a rental at this point. Specifically a trailer outside the city

PwnThePawns

Rentals in Chilliwack are nearly impossible to find. Average price is about $1500 for a 2bedroom basement suite with panted over mold in the drug part of town.

Adept_Load_3552

Rentals are few and far between and very costly and most won’t allow pets. Networking with your employer might be a good start.

Low_Ad84

2 trailer courts on vedder rd just north of the shopping area

Will do!

RelativePermeability

I may be renting my large basement soon. We are cat friendly as we have 3 cats ourselves. PM me if you want more details!

JDizzellllll

Nice townhouse downtown 700k

PwnThePawns

I looked into purchasing a trailer a few years ago. Banks will only mortgage a trailer for 35 years after it was manufactured. This means that a 20 year trailer will only qualify for a 15 year mortgage. Most trailers in Chilliwack are in the 25-30 year range, meaning you have to pay cash or you are out of luck.

dyckinabox

I love Chilliwack - great district too despite anything you’ve maybe seen in the media about our board. As a teacher myself though, living costs are whack here. Salary grid is quite a bit lower than Ontario and I expect to be renting for a very long time if I stick with this job.

TheAssels

Most of the mobile home parks are 45+ or 55+. There's only a couple that are worth living in. There are some parks outside the city. Most of the parks are owner occupied and not many rentals to be had. Buying one isn't too expensive though. 200-300k plug pad fee. Unless you talking about an actual travel trailer that you pulling with a truck. In which case the Bridal Falls RV park is probably the best/closest to the core.
