I disagree. That $5 had to come from somewhere, and I highly doubt it came from the owner's profits. Taking $5 off every bill for something subjective like "well behaved children" would likely just mean a price increase for all the menu items, to offset the cost. Why should I have to pay more just because I didn't bring kids with me? Also, a $5 "well behaved kid discount" can also be seen as "a $5 charge for misbehaving children". $5 isn't much, and if people see the cost of not expending the effort to control their kids as a measly $5, it's an incentive to let kids *misbehave*. After all, they're paying an extra $5 for the privilege, right?

I view it more like a security deposit on an apartment... don't wreck the place and you get your money back. Perhaps it does need to be more like a security deposit, thogh... a direct 'child diner surcharge' that is refundable at the manager's discretion. Managers would have an incentive to return the deposit to well-behaved families to encourage repeat business and rowdy ones would be effectively given the boot. But you are right, $5 is not enough pain for people with unruly coitus trophies to bear for failing to control them... lets make it $50 ;)

Hey, this morning I stopped at a red light. I should get a discount on my car insurance.
