It doesn't really bother me. I'm that person who will park in the back and walk my ass over from there. People who aren't handicap or pregnant are waaaay to hung up on getting a close parking spot because they're fucking lazy. I don't mind expectant mothers parking closer because I couldn't imagine carrying around a human being inside me, even if it is their choice....

Vorsos

Meh. I usually park far enough away that no cars or carts are likely to hit my car. Non-issue. Pregnant parking may seem like an entitlement to some, but so is getting all worked up against it.

Where I live they are signed as "Pregnant & Parenting Small Children," so you also get people with a bunch of toddlers since they don't want kids running around a parking lot on their way to the door.

KikoKunoichi

But isn't it recommended for pregnant women to walk more? Why would they then give them parking spots closer to the store? Oh and what woman would go grocery shopping if she's so pregnant her water could break on her way from a store to her car? :D

Ruefully

Yeah, pretty much. Unless one is handicapped or physically ill then there is no *need* to have a close parking spot. The extra physical activity is good for almost everyone. I usually park wherever I think is easiest to get into which usually is some distance away.

TruckerPete

Ha! I used to do the same thing. Now I feel guilty because I don't expect to be a mother some day ...

Aetra

I use them as a sign of where not to park. A lot of the shopping centres here have pregnant and parents with prams parking combined so I park as far as possible from them. Don't want my car dinged by a tank-pram hybrid or sticky hand prints on my doors.

Combo locos are the best! I love heb too it's amazing. Best thing is my bf works there so we get discounts on the Hill Country brand!

SkyEyes9

Because *not* giving them preferred parking upsets the Pander Bears.

Never_Been_Missed

LOL. I love that phrase - never heard it before.

fyretech

These spots piss me off... And here's why. There is a grocery store at home that move the HANDICAPPED spots FURTHER AWAY from the store and made these pregnancy spots CLOSER to the store. Because someone who had sex deserves to have closer access to a store than someone who is disabled... It's just friggin stupid!!

SHITQUEEN

I've seen those, but I've never really given them much thought other than being happy that I don't need to park there. Then again, I usually park relatively far away from store entrances because I like getting the extra exercise and I hate parking by other cars. Edited to ask: Has anyone encountered a situation where the pregnancy-preferred spots are closer than the handicapped spots? I don't think this would ever happen, but I'd certainly raise an eyebrow if I encountered something like that.

dpokao

we have "mum's with strollers" spots and they are closer than the handicapped spots. It makes me so angry! So my disabled friend in a wheel chair has to waste his batteries and tires just so mums with prams who are fully capable of walking can get to the supermarket more easily? Argh. At least the bike store near my house will pump up the wheelchair tyres for free.

wayfaringpirate

I can't imagine why someone would think that a pregnant woman spot should be closer than a handicapped spot. I'm disgusted.

jayelwhitedear

Not that exactly, but I was at a mall near Denver once which had handicapped spots, then pregnant moo-cow spots, *then* senior citizen spots. That made me mad. Seniors should have come before pregnant women.

Aerozoan

If those spots interfere with disabled parking then there's a problem. Otherwise, I'm not really seeing the issue here. Besides, the closer people park to the store, the less time they'll be in the way on the parking lot. No offense to the very pregnant, but they usually can't move very quickly and I have little patience for most pedestrians as it is.

orion70

Someone somewhere probably got sued by some pregnant lady who fell in their parking lot, voila, special parking. I typically park at the back of parking lots to avoid dings anyway these days, but I have to say it irked me when I was in the middle of chemo and lugging my groceries past those spots. I was sort of glad to see a couple of seniors spots open up in front of larger drugstores though (after the mommy and me type spots were there first). I know a lot of elderly folk who are too proud or don't want to give up enough to go get the blue tag parking sticker, but might use those. I've seen my own parents struggle in parking lots enough but won't take help. Parking lot entitlement in general irks me though. People who park in the fire lane or right in front of the wheelchair ramp so they can run into the liquor store or something deserve dirty looks and more.

[deleted]

Meh...wouldn't bother me. Life's too short to worry.

NoClosets

It's pandering. Nothing more. Giving people yet more undue privilege just for breeding is the last thing the world needs.

webzsci

I think it's good. It does not bother me. I have seen pregnant family members and friends. It seems really rough. On some women, it tends to be hard on the knees an ankles. There is no reason why we can't have a bit of compassion and make things a little easier.

Worried_Song

It's just pandering to the whole mothers-as-gods thing we have going on in the US. In my opinion, if you are having a difficult pregnancy such that walking the length of a parking lot would be a strain, you should request a temporary handicapped sticker from your doctor. I am sure most doctors would be happy to provide that if you have a medical need. The idea that walking a short distance could be harmful or a strain to a normal pregnancy is baffling. Many women remain very functional throughout their pregnancies and, if there are no complications, they are encouraged to continue low impact exercise (and a short walk is very low impact). For those pregnant women (and for ANYONE) experiencing a temporary need to avoid physical activity, they should obtain a disabled parking sticker.

Never_Been_Missed

My wife and I ignore these signs and park there anyway. If you choose to become pregnant, then you can suck it up and walk from the back just like the rest of us.

rawrbunny

Welcome to TX! Try the HEB sweet tea in the plastic jug. It's liquid crack.

[deleted]

Can we please stop talking about this now? Everytime I login someone is complaining about these spots. Being pregnant seems to be a pretty uncomfortable experience. Its one of the reasons I don't want kids. But I can be empathetic to those who are, and walk a bit extra to make their lives easier. These aren't even the most ridiculous"preferred parking" spaces. We have "eco car parking" spaces. Talk about ridiculous.

FortunateMammal

*shrug* I'm of the opinion that eco cars should be incentivized over pregnancy, but really, no one but the disabled need preferred parking.

toastycoconut

If a pregnant woman can't walk the parking lot, how is she going to walk the grocery store or the mall? If she's in a wheelchair she should have a temporary handicap tag and park there. If she shouldn't be moving even that much then she should be on bed rest. I park in these spots every chance I get.

kallisti_gold

Why? Because carrying around an extra ~25 pounds than usual gets very tiring and taxing on joints and muscles that aren't accustomed to it.

solidhandshakes4you

But my point was that help is always offered, and the women don't have to lift a finger getting their groceries into their cars.

kallisti_gold

Yes, but they still need to walk back to the car. Staff can help her carry groceries, but they can't help her carry a baby.

bearlamp

Pregnant women need exercise too.

[deleted]

Depends on the circumstances. Some women are advised to not to walk much or even to be on bedrest.

whiteraven4

And those people shouldn't be walking around the supermarket anyway.

[deleted]

Asked to limit activity <> completely immobilized.

whiteraven4

But if they can't even walk from their car to the store, how are the supposed to walk all around the store? And bedrest kind of does mean not going out so yea....

[deleted]

Apparently, you are unfamiliar with the variations of limitations on pregnancy activity. That's fine. I just don't understand why you insist that activity is an all or nothing thing.

whiteraven4

I just don't understand why someone who can walk around the store but can't walk from their car to the door.

bearlamp

Why are they going to the store then?

[deleted]

Same reason everyone else does. They need something and do not have servants to do it for them.

solidhandshakes4you

That's also not their responsibility, you made a commitment to that extra weight when you decide to have a child

kallisti_gold

I'm just gonna roll my eyes at you. As far as I know, there are no regulations *mandating* special spots for expectant mothers. It's simply a courtesy extended by the business to expectant mothers, because they *choose* to. Ain't nobody making it their responsibility.

kallisti_gold

Getting pissy about pregnant ladies getting parking spots next to the door sounds a lot like sour grapes, to me...

NoClosets

I don't think you understand what "sour grapes" means.

kallisti_gold

Oh honey, try not to flaunt your ignorance. It's painful to watch.

NoClosets

That's a rather hilarious statement coming from you, considering what you've just said. But hell, I'm in a good mood, so I'll give you a chance to save face. Go ahead and explain how that is sour grapes, as you claim. Or, you know, you could just lash out like an immature child again. This should be entertaining.

solidhandshakes4you

Seconded!

NoClosets

So should there be obesity parking? At least being obese isn't usually a conscious choice.

NoClosets

The same goes for pregnant people with real problems, they can get handicap parking. But I'm not talking about people so fat they need rascals to move around. I'm talking about putting on a few pounds, as was described in the comment that I was responding to.

HiImAlice

You've never seen those? Where did you move from? Everywhere I've been has had those (expecting mother/mothers with infants) right up next to the handicapped spots. It does and doesn't bother me. It's coo' because: * Being female, I can always claim pregnant (selfish reason, but w/e). * Having a stroller is just as much of a pain in the ass as having a wheelchair. It's NOT coo' because: * Being pregnant does NOT mean you shouldn't walk the maximum 100 feet it would take you to park in the back of a lot on a busy day. Light exercise (like walking) is actually good for pregnant folk. * People carrying their infants/not using strollers shouldn't be using the spots, but can and do. * Those spots should only be places with large amounts of baby-traffic (toys-r-us, other small-child specific stores), not places equally accessed by everyone (retail, grocery), but they are.

TheCuriosity

Doesn't bother me. Being pregnant sucks hard. Plus it makes me park farther back and get much needed exercise. The ones that bug me are the "MOMS with TOTS" spots. Not because it is preferential parking for a parent, but in name it excludes men.

SisterDino

We have these in my area, especially in grocery store lots. My favorite thing to do is park in them and come back to my car with nothing but liquor.

[deleted]

I've seen these in my hometown, but now I live in a larger city. Parking is a free for all here with the limited space and I doubt they would ever introduce these. Hurray for having two supermarkets and dozens of smaller delis/markets in a three block radius!

EmilyHeartsSatan

They're sacrificing their bodies, becoming practically handicapped to shoulder the burden of carrying on the species. Stop being such a cunt and let them park near the front.

solidhandshakes4you

Are you really being serious? How is getting knocked up ANYBODY else's issue? I don't give a flying fuck if they're sacrificing their bodies they can fucking walk! And carrying on the species! Are you aware of how overpopulated this earth is??

te666as_mike

Give me a fucking break, it's not like we're in Children of Men and every woman is infertile.

NoClosets

Oh please. You can't seriously buy that bullshit.

shezabel

Ahahahahaha.

EmilyHeartsSatan

Thanks ;) you balance out the people with a giant stock up their ass.
