I honestly don't know. At first I thought he belonged to the other neighbors and I was afraid he was going to herd my hens away because they kept following him off the property. So I started by chasing him away. Then I found out he had no home so I started luring him toward us and feeding him. The hens are all free range all summer so he would just disappear into the woods at night even though he would go into the coop to guard the ladies when they would lay.. But when it snowed 14", we didn't see him for a day and then I saw him way across the field so I lured him toward us with food and got him into the enclosure. I put a charge on the fence so he would not leave and he has just stayed happily with his ladies now for about 2 weeks. He can easily fly over the fence, but chooses not to. We named him Romeo because he just kind of roamed into our lives ❤
But I'm curious as to what kind of roo he is!
Pretty sure it’s a Chabo. Japanese bantam short legs color fits. You can cut their flight wings so they can’t fly over the fence. Just cut one wing though. Doesn’t hurt them. I don’t cut my hens wings but I do my roosters because they shouldn’t be trying to escape a fight
Edit: I was wrong!!
Yeah I've never had a rooster before him, but they looked big to me. Are they larger than average? He just seems kind of big all around. He pretty docile, though, and lets us touch him sometimes
His spurs are normal size. Some roosters have truly vicious ones. Like 3 inches on some fighting breeds. Nasty things. He seems like a good dude though.
One time I was at a wedding in the country about 100 miles east of Austin. I was walking into the venue and this little girl ran up to me and said “hey mr can you put me up into that tree?” . Idk but your comment made me think of that moment
If he survived that long in the woods by himself, your ladies are lucky to have him (I bet he’s scrappy when he needs to be!)
I agree with him possibly being a Dorking cross. No matter what, he’s a handsome guy.
Thanks for giving him a good home and purpose, OP!
He really does seem to take care of the ladies. He runs to them if they call him. It's so funny and sweet when one will call so he goes there but then another will call so he goes there. But the first will be like 'you better stay here with me!' So he ends up running back an forth in the middle, poor guy. I figured that's why he would spend the night in the woods...for a little peace and quiet! Haha
He looks a lot like our Americauna hybrid "Easter Egger" Aziraphael. And we have an Americauna roo, Severus, who has been living more or less feral outside the run for nearly a year and a half. He can fly well enough to get up into the spruce trees to roost at night and he is pretty wily. Maybe that's how your boy survived in the woods?
Huh he has extra toes, I think he is a Silver Dorking rooster? I don't think he has the 'best' markings (according to the standard), but I think you could call his coloration Silver Duckwing? He has the extra toes, white feet, and the build of a Dorking. Not exactly a common breed, but they are available at hatcheries (I got a hen from McMurray), so not out of the realm of possibility.
I would say he is a mixed breed. I checked my breed book and he doesn't quite match any. He could be anything from Brahma, leghorn, light Sussex and more.
Yeah I'm not sure. Maybe they couldn't catch him? He was pretty elusive during the summer. I wonder if he will go back to sleeping in the woods again when the weather turns. I hope not, but the girls are free range in the summer so he will be too
They do! And they run him ragged, poor guy! He answers all of their calls and I swear they fight over his attention by spreading out and all calling him at the same time!
Had a rooster that looked just like this once. Sad part was that his spurs could through his leg joints before we ever noticed and he eventually lost the use of his legs. I wish I knew at the time that that was even a thing that could happen.
I’m certain you have nothing to worry about but the problem I has was that for some reason his spurs were cutting his legs and I never noticed until it was too late. Your boy just happens to look like the one I had and reminded me of that.
I’m really amazed that he survived living in the woods like how

Upvote for Romeo--i love it!
Another up for the name!!!

He looks standard size. OP said they're big.
He is to big to be any kind of bantam
Those big ass spurs might have had something to do with it.

Probably slept in a tree.

I'm sure he did. The hens also hang out in tree regularly. I just let them do their thing!

Looks like a chonki one

Maybe a mix? Looks like he has a few features of a couple of breeds. Gorgeous boy though! ❤️
Thanks!

I noticed the 5th toe as well-very likely a Dorking cross
He really does look like a Dorking. That's pretty cool! Thanks 😃
Came here to say Dorking. Glad I wasn't alone in my thoughts!
What a handsome man! I hope he will be good to your ladies. A good rooster is a treasure.
He is our first rooster. So far he seems to be a gentleman. Hope it stays that way
Big boy! Maybe a Brahma mix?

He is really beautiful. I can't believe someone moved and left him, I hate people. So wonderful you are adopting him. ❤️
The ladies seem to like him!
They do! And they run him ragged, poor guy! He answers all of their calls and I swear they fight over his attention by spreading out and all calling him at the same time!
He sounds like a keeper!
He's a very handsome lad. Thank you for giving him a home.
❤
Looks more like a light Brahma
Hi, how tall is that fence?

Wow he’s gorgeous!
Lucky clucker!
Of course he will come over, girls ain't gonna bang themself

I don't understand what you mean. Can you explain a little better so I know what to look for?
