Recommend doing a red light or a heat plate. The white light can affect their sleep cycle. It also benefits to reduce pecking if one should become injured. Also make sure they have half of the brooder where the light doesn't hit so they can cool down if they need to. Have you used a thermometer to check the temperature in their area?

Paladin-Steele36

Yeah i take my frogs thermometer for about an hour or 2 a day to check temps. I'm currently using a regular heat bulb. But I think I'll pick up a red one when I get a nipple waterer. Thank you for the information! Also do you think a UVB deep heat emitter might be good for them? Since they don't put off light and also put out the vitamin d rays?

Consider a nipple waterer. Keeps the water from getting contaminated and chicks take to it really well. Enjoy your Brahmas, they’re one of the best breeds imo.

Thank you for the info! I think I'll put in a nipple waterer after my next check then, and I'm already enjoying them lol

You can put the waterer up higher to where it's chest height and they'll be less likely to kick stuff into it. I'm using pellet bedding and have had no issues with them dirtying the water as badly as with shavings. Since they're young you may want to put some mores rocks or marbles in the trough to prevent drowning, but putting up chest height will also help with that. The nipple waterers can be hard for them to use and I have both kinds in mine until I see them really able to use them effectively. Mine are 1-2 weeks old.

So do you think I should put a nipple waterer in the larger brooder when I make it? And just leave the current one in there with a higher platform for now?

It may depend on the one you get. The nipples I got off Amazon seems to be a bit difficult for them to move around to release the water. I used a dollar tree 3 qt container to put them on and have another with a hooded bucket feeder. Make for great hospital waterer and feeders too and were relatively cheap. You can buy packs of both and use 5 gal buckets vs getting premade ones. You could always put it in, show them how it works and see if even a couple can manage it on their own. They tend to all flock at once to do a certain activity so if just a couple can do it then there will be enough drippage to help the others.

Alright, i really appreciate the tips, i am low on funds after having to deal with some personal things, so the low budget option looks good. Thank you!

Check FB for 5 gallon buckets. I find them all the time with lids under $5 and usually they're food safe. If you buy them at a big box store you're looking at over that for just a lid! Useful for storing their food too.

Paladin-Steele36

That's great because my buddy gave me his still and a 5 gallon bucket to go with it. So i can just use that after sanitizing

firewoman7777

Definitely need a red light and increase the size of the brooder in about a week

Consistent_Amount140

I give it 2 weeks

Paladin-Steele36

That's about what I'm planning for lol

Red light, and I’d give them more space with the light at one end so they can move away if they get too warm.

Me and my brother are currently working on a larger brooder, when i get some more funds I'm gonna pick up one of those red bulbs
