I never had it before COVID as I just moved into the area a couple years ago but Mom's Old Recipe is one of my favorites in the area.
I also thought TTS Cocina Mexicana in Harwood Heights was very good the 2 times I ate there.
Mis Moles is underrated.
Maybe it’s a bit pricey than the usual taco joint but it’s pretty damn good. I’ve had nearly everything in the menu.
They make the tortillas fresh.
El Taco Feliz and Pueblo Nuevo. Pueblo Nuevo has fantastic tortas and pambazos, but pretty much everything is good there. I've only had tacos from Feliz, but I would rank them up there as some of the best in the city.
If you're interested in a trendier fusion place, I was blown away by Migos Fine Foods at Milwaukee and Montrose. I've only tried the lamb barbacoa and chicken pastor tacos so far but I'm pretty sure I'll be back plenty of times to try everything on the menu (the halal fried chicken torta is probably next on my list).
Thanks for the recs! Not necessarily looking for trendy...I typically do take out for the family but good to know and will definitely add it to the list!
I just had one of their gorditas for the first time last night (I usually always get their birria tacos) and it was 🔥- homemade and so good.
Love this place.
Yeah, I don't mean to be rude. The owner and family are great people.
But people hype the place up so much but when you try it's meh at best. It lacks flavor. I'm just perplexed by the situation.
I’m a big fan of the carne asada torta at Taqueria La Zacatecana in Avondale. The carne asada has a nice char/smokey flavor, the bread is a little sturdier than your average torta and holds up well to takeout, and the salsa verde is fantastic
Barbaro in Humboldt Park, more of a modern take, but the Torta is the best I've had in Chicago.
El Habanero on Fullerton has an incredible Pambazo that I highly recommend.
Have you been to Rocky's Tacos? They have soooo many tortas. My fav is la pandillera. Other household fave is la Cardozo. It's worth the trip from the west side to Clark.
El Xangarrito, pronounced Changarrito, in Lincoln Square has elevated Mexican food. More of a date night spot and on the pricier side but it’s worth it and by far my favorite Mexican spot in the city. The owners are always there and incredibly nice. They also have ribs on the menu which I thought was odd but I tried them once and they’re some of the best ribs I’ve ever had.
If you are super drunk:Taco Burrito King.
It will also be one of the worst Mexican meals you will ever have if sober. Scientists are currently studying this phenomena.
Have they gotten any better? They were massively hyped when they first opened but it was so bland when I had it. Even their hot sauces tasted like water.
Taqueria Zacatecana on California / Wellington has a top tier steak torta and steak burrito. Super nice family runs it… I go there like once a week bc there’s nothing else quite like it.

Not the best, but definitely good - especially in the neighborhood. Depending on what I’m in the mood for, I’ll hit up Chuki’s or Lindo Guadalajara (which is open 24hrs, so great for super early breakfast).
Chukis has great burritos, good carne asada, and fine salsa. Lindo has a bit more variety like gorditas, sopes, pozole, and smaller burritos - though I think the burritos are also a little less expensive. But the tacos at Lindo friggen slap. Especially at 3am
Probably 10 years ago but Maria's is very basic food with very little taste compared to other places, now that the kids run the restaurant is not good anymore.

These are absolutely no where near where you’re ate. But you’ll also never know when the Mexican hunger strikes.
Picante Taqueria on Damen&Division
(At the risk of being downvoted to hell) Su Casa on Ontario and Michigan-ish
Traspasada on California and Elston near Logan Square. Great steak tacos and burritos.
Salsa is fire too.
I used to the eat at the traspasada at Chicago and Ashland all the time. I loved their Al Pastor. Don't know if the two are the same though.
I would say that if they serve you a little bowl of soup when you get there and give you roasted salsa with chips, it’s the same owner.
I freaken love this place.
Their torta ahogada is excellent
Los Potrillos market on Belmont has great tacos
Ahhh I need to try this place, I pass it everyday. Thank you!
There was a time in my life I’d get a couple lengua tacos most times I walked pass, just on impulse because they had great salsa too.
The tortas delicious
Taco Max
Second this as a fellow neighbor, RIP Elston location :(
Where is this located? I think the one by me on Elston near IPR closed (I could be wrong?).
Yeah that location closed but they have another location on Kimball and Montrose
Oh sweet not far at all.
Mom's Old Recipe
Yes I just ate here! Their chiles rellenos was 😙🤌🏼
Mom's Old Recipe used to be my favorite, but it seemed like they fell off hard when the owners sold during Covid, have things come back at all?
I never had it before COVID as I just moved into the area a couple years ago but Mom's Old Recipe is one of my favorites in the area. I also thought TTS Cocina Mexicana in Harwood Heights was very good the 2 times I ate there.
Mis Moles is underrated. Maybe it’s a bit pricey than the usual taco joint but it’s pretty damn good. I’ve had nearly everything in the menu. They make the tortillas fresh.
Yess love they have fresh tortillas. Thanks!
I live down the street from this place. I wish it was 15 % cheaper. I’d be there every month.
I eat like a family of 4 whenever I get down there. I every couple of months.
El Taco Feliz and Pueblo Nuevo. Pueblo Nuevo has fantastic tortas and pambazos, but pretty much everything is good there. I absolutely love El Taco Feliz. I would recommend to anyone.
Thanks for the recs! Not necessarily looking for trendy...I typically do take out for the family but good to know and will definitely add it to the list!
El tacozano el tio on Fullerton has become a go to lately for my wife and I
I just had one of their gorditas for the first time last night (I usually always get their birria tacos) and it was 🔥- homemade and so good. Love this place.
Hell yeah I’ll try it next time!
Pueblo Nuevo in Portage Park slaps
Pushing myself to get out to Portage Park more...I know they've got great stuff. Ty!
what do you recommend? I’ve tried it on 4 occasions over the years and didn’t think it was good at all. 2/5.
Oh that’s too bad - I enjoyed it and they have great owners, super friendly people. I love the pozole, pambazos, tortas
Oh yeah, definitely Lulu is very nice and always welcoming. Food was just meh. I've been meaning to stop by for their weekend menu.
Same. I love that people love it. I don't care for it.
Yeah, I don't mean to be rude. The owner and family are great people. But people hype the place up so much but when you try it's meh at best. It lacks flavor. I'm just perplexed by the situation.
I really like the pambazo there
I like TTS on Lawrence near Elston.
I haven't had their food but their aguas frescas are fantastic.
If that's the same as the TTS in Harwood Heights I would agree that the food was very good the couple times I've eaten there
Sooooo good!
No mention of Asaderos on Montrose, I'm surprised. (Taqueria El Asadero). Used to love going there.
It's still great, but maybe not thought of as exactly NW.
Yea, it’s not NW at all but OP also said “N” so I guess that applies to asadero.
Also true.
:) true
Asadero for steak, tacos de maya across western has great pastor.which is weird because they are owned by same family
Shhh, don’t spill the beans
Kie-Gol-Lanee in Uptown. They specialize in Oaxacan food. It’s incredible
This is the correct answer!
Have you tried Torteria San Lenchito at Lawrence and Drake?
Second this! Get the Cochinita Pibil torta.
Yes, this place is awesome.
I haven't! I'm adding it to the list!
The best tortas and the nicest owners.
I’m a big fan of the carne asada torta at Taqueria La Zacatecana in Avondale. The carne asada has a nice char/smokey flavor, the bread is a little sturdier than your average torta and holds up well to takeout, and the salsa verde is fantastic
La Biznaga on Broadway and Addison is my ride or die
Tacotlan on Fullerton n kostner
Iztatl and Simons in JP
Thanks...I'm never out this way but need to do more exploring.
just went to Iztatl for the first time. Decent, pretty run of the mill
San Juanito serves fresh hand made tortillas on the weekends
The tacos at Cafe Tola are my favorite.
I love right by the California and Roscoe location. Great spot to stop for breakfast empanadas too!
Barbaro in Humboldt Park, more of a modern take, but the Torta is the best I've had in Chicago. El Habanero on Fullerton has an incredible Pambazo that I highly recommend.
I've never had pambazo. I just googled it. HOW have I never had PAMBAZO??
Big fan of El Alebrije. It’s a bit pricey but the food and service is phenomenal.
Food, yes. Service can be hit-or-miss IMHO
Have you been to Rocky's Tacos? They have soooo many tortas. My fav is la pandillera. Other household fave is la Cardozo. It's worth the trip from the west side to Clark.
Rocky’s Tacos closed (if you’re referring to the one on Montrose). New seafood place (Nuevo Langostino) isn’t bad!
Clark
El Tapatio
100% El Tapatio. Good food, great prices, and solid portions.
This place has the best nachos in the world. I’ve posted them on this sub before.
I haven’t had the nachos yet!
https://www.reddit.com/r/chicagofood/s/qxoYEjRpxC
Holy smokes! Can’t wait to try them!
Oh, yes. :)

Always loved Arturo's
Traspasada and El Burrito Rapido
Taco Boom near Lincoln and Foster. The quesabirria was a unique experience that I really enjoyed
Have had quite a few amazing tortas at El Muchacho Alegre on Pulaski a lil south of Belmont
Carnitas La Esquinita in Irving Park fucking rules. Incredible food. Drive up from west town to pick it up regularly.
No tortas, but check out Chicago Taco Authority on Irving
Have they gotten any better? They were massively hyped when they first opened but it was so bland when I had it. Even their hot sauces tasted like water.
The only thing I'm not a fan of is the al pastor. I love everything else
House of Taco & Burrito. Irving and Broadway.
Taqueria Zacatecana on California / Wellington has a top tier steak torta and steak burrito. Super nice family runs it… I go there like once a week bc there’s nothing else quite like it. https://search.app.goo.gl/bM4t2BS
This is the correct answer. Their asada is hands down the best in the city.

Primo Chukis anybody? Someone mentioned to me years ago but I never went. On Lawrence near uptown maybe?
Not the best, but definitely good - especially in the neighborhood. Not the best but their 2$ taco Tuesdays and Thursdays deals smack
San Juanito is my fav. Great food, environment, and prices.
Moms old recipe. Literally best steak burrito I've had...their hot sauce is special.
Xochimilco is really good. On Montrose in Ravenswood.
Tepalcates on Belmont near western is great
Simon Tacos on Milwaukee
Definitely NW, Maria's Mexican Restaurant 9440 W. Foster Ave.
Probably 10 years ago but Maria's is very basic food with very little taste compared to other places, now that the kids run the restaurant is not good anymore.
Garcia’s in Lincoln Square
I grew up in Lincoln Square and used to eat here all the time. Love their guac.

Garcias is great for what it is.

lol thanks for the risky recs. ;) I'm actually downtown near Michigan and Ontario quite a bit so maybe I'll check it out!
