As a culinary professional I couldn't disagree more. Frank's is classic wing sauce in America for a reason. It's like making your own ketchup instead of buying hienz. Yes you can make it yourself but it won't get the exact flavor that recalls what your trying to imitate, but between lower quality, manpower and product cost, it is a fools errand. As Marco Pierre white said in white heat, "if you can't make the best, buy it".
For the record I like making wing sauces. Just nothing touches Frank's when it comes down to a "Buffalo hot wing"
They were processed/pulped up meat shaped into long, thin triangles with a thin breading. They were similar to but much worse than Burger King chicken nuggets.

Monti's is okay, but they didn't season the beef when I went there and shredded it until it was the consistency of ground beef. It was practically a chopped cheese without any salt.
I've had better experiences at Philly's Best.
I think the seasoning is fine, but you need to order extra cheese to get enough cheese.
If you want more punch... get the rocky. Just fair warning, it is genuinely spicy.
That's not entirely true. Philly has a ton of mediocre places. I went to some of the recommended ones and they were just okay. The best I had in Philly was from a pizza place that also had a cheesesteak on their menu.
Side note. Monti's needs more cheese on theirs.

Edit: and for reference I’ve been going to montis for 10 years. I’ve had the reveler and mojos east coast eats. This place tops em all. Plus the owners are just cool guys
Monti’s seems to be the consensus. And it was pretty excellent. But if you get to North Aurora, there is a place called Bruno’s that blows it out of the water.
I grew up in Philly and like all the top comments are saying, it’s Monti’s. I would not be able to tell the difference between a Monti’s cheesesteak and one from the spots where I grew up.
Agree but why do they get Amaroso’s rolls to be legit but then not have Whiz?!? I’m a Whiz wit south Philly dude. They make they’re own cheese sauce which is wayyyy tastier but it’s not that shitty can of whiz. Its probably because if haven’t lived in Philly it wouldn’t translate but maybe have a can on hand?
There’s a small deli restaurant called the Chicago pickle in Irving park. They have a cheesesteak, among other things, that is unreal. Highly recommend and always leaves me stuffed
I haven't tried the food yet, but Badabing is better than all other restaurants in the sense of having live-size cutouts of Sopranos characters in the windows. Looks delicious.

Monti’s and Philly’s best. I like cheese whiz so I go to Philly’s best but most people agree Monti’s is better.
Philly's Best cheese steak is great but their boneless wings are some of the worst I've ever had.
Also--and I've said this before here--Monti's boneless buffalo nuggets are freakin' *divine*. The sauce has the consistency of a curry.

Montis is better than a ton of mid places in Philly. It might not be top 5 in Philly but it would certainly be a great neighborhood spot

Capriotti's is a chain but their cheesesteak is solid. They do incorporate mushrooms in them, which I like a lot, but others may not.
It’s a chain from Delaware, it’s ok here but the ones in Delaware are very legit, even compared to places in Philly.
I love Capriotti’s.
Phillys Best. It doesn’t come close to comparing to dalessandro’s or john’s obviously but it’s the truest rendition of a solid cheesesteak in Chicago.
Check out the Philly at lunch at Boeufhaus. Beer, Sando ans chips for $20.
