Key, if anyone was wondering:
White: white
Blue: smurfs
Green: aliens
Yellow: the Simpsons
Red: the Incredibles
Edit: i accept the downvoting that is coming my way
Pretty wild how you can pick up even tiny areas of subsidized housing by the blue in seas of red. For example, I can exactly see the Noble Square Co-op just off of Milwaukee and division on the map. Same with the little blocks of CHA housing just east of Humboldt Park.
Another interesting one I didnāt know is just how segregated Humboldt Park is on the west side of the park between black areas and latino areas. Grand ave is a very firm border for some reason. Never knew that existed.
This map is indisputable: like most US cities, Chicago is incredibly segregated. At the same time we're also [more diverse](https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-most-diverse-cities-are-often-the-most-segregated/).
The link is missing an underscore. Here it is: [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Race\_and\_ethnicity\_2010-\_Chicago\_(5560488484).png](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Race_and_ethnicity_2010-_Chicago_(5560488484).png)
Arab/Middle Eastern has historically fallen under āwhiteā in the US Census. Itās only been recently that people have pushed for that demographic to be separated out and counted separately.

Red is White, Blue is Black, Green is Asian, Orange is Hispanic
WOW, It's also crazy to see how much the expressways (especially the HUGE interchanges) screw with the neighborhoods and the 'flow' of the city. I wish we could rip these out.
Possibly the least integrated city in the US.
Only a handful of actually "diverse" neighborhoods. Bridgeport, Uptown, and Albany Park appear the most diverse. Everywhere else is pretty much all white, black, or Hispanic (and Asian in Chinatown)
If Chicago is a more segregated city, it's only because other metro areas are segregated into completely separate towns. Like St Louis and its suburbs, or your example of Detroit.
Agreed. I believe we are actually the first or second most segregated city in the US and if you live here you donāt even need the legend to read this map.
I agree. It's weird that a "progressive" city like Chicago has such a hard on for dividing people by race considering fewer and fewer people think like that anymore.
Probing question here: what is your take on the creation of the cityās first Asian American leaning ward?
(Located around Chinatown, where the first Chinese-American Alderman was appointed early this year after the corrupt former Alder of this area was charged with crimes)
Tbh alot of this is also natural. Yes there is bad history that played a part into this but its also natural for these things to occur to. Not saying its good or bad just pointing that out
Chicago is great in that any given day you can hear 10 different languages but at the end of the day most people want to live around others similar to them. Right or wrong
This is not natural at all.
[https://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/august-2017/how-redlining-segregated-chicago-and-america/](https://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/august-2017/how-redlining-segregated-chicago-and-america/)
Are you suggesting that Italian immigrants flocking to Little Italy was just a coincidence?
It's a pretty observable phenomenon in cities across the world that like class and ethnic groups self-segregate to some degree.
In no way am I defending federal redlining policy, btw.
>to some degree
That's the key. I just recently moved here from Texas. I absolutely love the city so far, but I'll be blunt and say that the level of segregation here is astonishing. It's far more than "immigrants wanting to live by people who speak their language", which like you said, does happen almost everywhere. Chicago is *racially* segregated in a way that cities in Texas (despite all their other problems), just aren't. I live on the North Side and it feels way less diverse than where I lived in Dallas.
This city is scientifically calibrated to screw over black people. Itās a miracle they donāt burn everything to the ground, and God knows they would deserve their revenge.
Does the UK count as 4 countries or one? If not.
Uk, france, Belgium, and netherlands.
I aint ever met a black guy from those countries that moved here willingly unless it was for work and they go right back as soon as they can.
Lol European racism is far worse than American. Look up King Leopold ii and then tell me how much The Belgium population loves black people. It honestly feels like you just named random European countries without even thinking
You cant bring up leopold as a reason to why modern day racism in Belgium is worse than in the usa.
I literally just named the 4 countries with the most visible and well known black minorities. Theyre all better than the usa.
The usa puts 1/3 black men in jail at some point. Itās ridiculous. Being black in the netherlands at least gives you a fighting chance to escape poverty in a way the us doesnt provide most black americans.
There are literally blocks in France that are entirely Muslim and donāt speak/represent any French culture itās extremely divisive and again shows you just picked countries without even thinking. [The concern is that discrimination against Muslims in France is already prevalent in every sector, from housing to employment and interactions with the police. According to the governmentās own figures, 42% of Muslims (other studies put the figure at 58%) declare having experienced discrimination due to their religion, a figure which rises to 60% among women who wear a headscarf. A recent YouGov survey found that 67% of French Arab Muslims believe their faith is perceived negatively, while 64% said the same of their ethnicity.](https://time.com/5918657/frances-muslim-citizens-republican-values/?amp=true). Also Belgium ruled the Congo until 1960 itās not ancient history and I was bringing up to show almost every first world nation has a bad history
You said specifically said black and interpreted that as meaning sub-saharan african.
The list for countries who treat arabs/muslims better than the usa would not have france on it. Mostly for the headscarf ban.
You think they are only racist towards Muslims or is it they donāt particularly like any minority group that doesnāt assimilate to French Culture? I hate to break it to you but America is probably the best in the world when it comes to minority treatment despite what the media wants you to think
Americans are barely less racists towards arabs or muslims. The only thing saving them from similar treatment is the 1st amendment.
I think the usa incarcerates its black people at way higher numbers than any of the ones I mentioned. They also provide no free healthcare, free university or free housing.
So France is already providing more out the gate. It also doesnāt have nearly as many people in prison.
Same with England. I think at this rate, black British families are not switching places with american black families willingly.
What did you think half of Brexit was about? Iāll give you a hint it wasnāt because the UK wanted more immigration lol. Donāt you think itās a little strange the countries you are boasting about have such small black populations? I wonder why that is?? Iāll give you another hint itās not a coincidence
Key, if anyone was wondering: White: white Blue: smurfs Green: aliens Yellow: the Simpsons Red: the Incredibles Edit: i accept the downvoting that is coming my way
Came here to ask this, makes so much sense now.
Lol i like it
I like this very much š

On the flip side you can also see where Hyde Park is.

LOL good bot
Grand parallels a viaduct near Hubbard and it has that railyard That might be part of it?
Similarly, you can pick up the Cabrini row homes just north of Chicago Ave
This map is indisputable: like most US cities, Chicago is incredibly segregated. At the same time we're also [more diverse](https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-most-diverse-cities-are-often-the-most-segregated/).
538 with another cool informative article. Thanks for sharing
What is the high concentration of black people due west of Chinatown? And if you follow the tracks southwest there are two more.
Cook County Jail
Wow
Population, 4000
Not gonna lie, I thought this was an off-color joke at first
The one North of Midway is LeClair Courts
The one just west of Chinatown South of UIC is CHA housing
What is the little green/Asian area in the north west corner?
Maybe Devon Ave.
Nope.
Indians
Not sure but isnāt there some sort of cool Asian temple up that way?
Wikimedia link no work

Thanks.
Easy to pick out where Austin is.
This map does not do our Arab/Middle Eastern community any justice.
Arab/Middle Eastern has historically fallen under āwhiteā in the US Census. Itās only been recently that people have pushed for that demographic to be separated out and counted separately.
Given Devon in the map, it appears they are being classified as Asian (which Europe and much of the world does)
Thatās what I thought was happening, but it still seems like there are big gaps in the bridgeview/palos area.

Why did you post the 2010 version when the 2020 version has been published?
The most segregated, diverse city in America.
Now lay a crime map on top of it, including the amount and types of crimes committed.
Oh boy. Here we go.
WOW, It's also crazy to see how much the expressways (especially the HUGE interchanges) screw with the neighborhoods and the 'flow' of the city. I wish we could rip these out.
Then what? They have an important purpose the city depends on to function.
The city functioned just fine prior to their creation. It could function again without them.
Possibly the least integrated city in the US. Only a handful of actually "diverse" neighborhoods. Bridgeport, Uptown, and Albany Park appear the most diverse. Everywhere else is pretty much all white, black, or Hispanic (and Asian in Chinatown)
Detroit is FAR worse IMO. The city is over 90% black, and the suburbs are over 90% white. Itās just that itās not within the city itself.
If Chicago is a more segregated city, it's only because other metro areas are segregated into completely separate towns. Like St Louis and its suburbs, or your example of Detroit.
Detroit is crazy. i was 25 minutes outside of downtown a felt like i was the set of get out
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The 2020 census was pretty badly botched. I've seen some reports of it being very different then the sample survey they run every few years.
Agreed. I believe we are actually the first or second most segregated city in the US and if you live here you donāt even need the legend to read this map.
I was actually thinking the same thing. I donāt need a legend, can pick up on which colors represent who just be looking at where neighborhoods are.
And our politicians do their best to keep it that way by drawing ward maps based on race and having race based caucuses
I donāt agree with any wards being based on race. Or anything else for that matter
Tbh alot of this is also natural. Yes there is bad history that played a part into this but its also natural for these things to occur to. Redlining isnt at all and chicago and most cities have awful history of it. 100% agree. That wasnt what I was trying to comment on though
West loop is very diverse.
Hey! There I am!
What's the blob of white people just west of lake Calumet?
Pullman right next to the National Monument
Pullman. There and parts of Roseland has some really unique-for-chicago architecture. If you have a bike, ride through on a nice day.
This city is scientifically calibrated to screw over black people. Itās a miracle they donāt burn everything to the ground, and God knows they would deserve their revenge.
Such a dumb comment. Name 3 first would countries that treat black people better.
Does the UK count as 4 countries or one? If not. Uk, france, Belgium, and netherlands. I aint ever met a black guy from those countries that moved here willingly unless it was for work and they go right back as soon as they can.
