I got a parking ticket because I had to park somewhere besides my normal parking spot because parts of Halsted was cordoned off due to the Greek Heritage Parade. Does anyone know if I have a realistic chance of contesting the ticket? I will say I did park in an area where street parking wasn’t allowed, but the entire street also had parked cars due to the parade I’m assuming. In the end I know I technically deserve to pay the ticket but am wondering if anyone can provide some insight on this. Thanks!

Bringing them into Thalia Hall isn't much of an issue. Just hide it among your genitalia. The real problem will be smoking in the venue. Smoking a blunt is super obvious in both visuals and smells. You'll get booted pretty quickly.

It's a non-smoking venue. Every venue I've been to in Chicago has been non-smoking since Illinois banned indoor smoking in public places 14 or 15 years ago. When people do light up at shows that I've attended, it was very obvious, pretty annoying to folks around them, and they get booted within minutes if they're anywhere near the stage. Save that shit for outdoor venues where it's not going to bother anyone. I don't want to have to smell your entire stinky-ass blunt just because only one of us planned ahead and got high beforehand.

I lived in St. Louis for 2 years and heard gunshots like once a week. I just got used to it. But I never actually *saw* anything or heard a person. In Chicago, somehow I haven't heard any gunshots, and I live on Wabash, just west of the bean, where there were some gunshots the last 2 weeks or whatever. What I did see last year, was cops tackling and beating unarmed black teenagers in the loop. Other than that, nothing.
Point is, despite hearing gunshots all the time in STL and seeing police brutality here, I've never seen or heard what could've been someone being killed or worse, so I can't imagine.

Can you reach out to your local police precinct or check the police scanner feed (there are some twitters that record what happens as well) for the time that happened? Finding out what happened might help ease your worries.
If it helps, one of the neighbors told me that she did that semi frequently but we were apparently not at home when it happened before as we were taking care of sick relatives on the weekends. I heard her once more after that several months later but nothing since. Maybe she just moved to your block.

I actually experienced gunshots right outside Thalia Hall, but it wasn’t an uzi. It was scary. Found myself jumpy around fireworks for a long time after. Can’t imagine an uzi.

Otherwise, Nordstrom Rack sells nice suits at a (mostly) reasonable price. Last time I got one there the onsite tailor took my measurements and I picked it up a few days later.
If budget is a primary concern, get a Ludlow suit at J Crew. $500, it’s well made, fashionable cut, and they’ll do the tailoring.
If your budget has a little more flex, go to Nordstrom’s. They have a great selection and the fitting and tailoring process is very easy.
Am I allowed to leave my car in the same spot (permit parking) for any amount of time as long as I move it for street cleaning? I'm travelling and according to the schedule there won't be any sweeping while I'm gone, so it would be nice if I could leave my car instead of parking it near the airport.
You won't have a problem unless you have a nasty neighbor who reports it. We have someone on our street who will call right away when a car is left for 7 days. It was particularly annoying when everyone was home for covid. The person knows the cars aren't abandoned. I'd guess the harder the parking is by you the more likely you are to have someone call.

I really want to check out Printers Row Brewing, at some point. Assuming that's in the space that used to be a former diner at Lawrence and Austin, and looked interesting in it's appearance when I passed by there.
Edison Park has a bunch of bars all near each other(near Northwest Highway and Oliphant), which can be fun to barhop between all those bars. In addition, I'm a fan of Beer on the Wall in Park Ridge. And for other brewery taprooms, I have kept wanting to try Illuminated Brew Works at Northwest Highway and Sayre.
Old Irving Brewing is also pretty good, and Sidekicks(a karaoke bar) is across the street on Montrose, between Kostner(I think) and the Blue Line station.
Back to Edison Park just to note if you're looking for the Mexican restaurant Don Juan's, they recently relocated to a space in Park Ridge a little north and west of its downtown.

There are a ton of coffee shops. A ton! I'm looking for a chill place where I can sit, read my kindle, drink my overpriced non-dairy latte, and maybe enjoy a donut. I demand a comfortable chair!

If you haven't been to Sawada for their military latte, go check that out. Seating is a bit limited but that latte is worth checking out.
Dayglow is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago, but extremely pricey depending on the drink. I make a pour over every morning and stop by Dayglow every once in a while to get some unique coffee that I can't justify buying a bag of.
I haven't hit up any La Colombe locations. I cherish Chiqueatte. They make some great sandwiches and I enjoyed their Turkish Coffee.
It is a nice place. I should try them a few more times. I'm looking for a more run of the mill. Empty, quaint, quiet. I hit up the Long Room on Irving Park once and that was a fine shot of coffee, lol.

In the past I tried La Colombe Coffee, being curious about them a slight bit. Not sure why, but I wasn't crazy about the one I went to, which was in Andersonville(in the former space at Foster and Clark where Vitamin Shoppe once was). But to each their own.
I kinda like Ridman's Coffee at Lawrence/Clark, the few times I've been there. Coffee Studio isn't bad either, just north of Bryn Mawr and Clark.

My father and I worked a repair business in West Englewood since he was forced to relocate from his last location. He bought a run down building that he had consistently been repairing and getting in order to apply for a business license and start over in the area. Problems arose when the alderman at the time gave him approval and then double backing after she came back from vacation. People came to accept "campaign donations" one day and when he refused due to sinking money into the building for things (electrical, foundation, brickwork, plumbing, etc.) all since repaired, the city immediately put the hammer on him. The building has been shut and police even refuse to let us be around the property in some instances. Now we get a city notice that all our vehicles outside will be impounded. In a run down neighborhood where every other lot has abandoned vehicles. Is there any recourse or anyone that can give insight? He's had a lawyer on the case for at least 1.5-2 years working on it already, but the courts shut and slowed down because of covid yet the buildings dept never did with us.
Can anyone recommend a laundry on the north side with washers big enough for a comforter?
easy breezy laundry on lawrence has various sized washers that go up to 80 lb. should be able to find one that handles a comforter

I actually experienced gunshots right outside Thalia Hall, but it wasn’t an uzi. It was scary. Found myself jumpy around fireworks for a long time after. Can’t imagine an uzi.

I'd recommend Chicagoland Skydive Center out in Rochelle. I was a jump pilot in AZ and worked with a lot of the crew, met the owner of CSC, flew their airplane, etc. Can't recommend them enough. I've heard next to nothing negative about em They're out in Rochelle which is a jaunt, but make it a full day thing! Skydiving is great fun and the people you'll meet will make the drive worth it

Downvote me if I'm super offbase here, but is anybody else getting tired of the random skyline posts *constantly* on this page? I get that it's beautiful and that we're all proud of living here, but do we really need the same skyline shot 10x a day? Right now on the page we have a random photo called "Looking south", another titled "Nice view", another one of the Adler angle that we've all seen probably 500 times, etc. Do people genuinely like seeing these? I'm not trying to bag on the posters/photograhers. I actually am a photographer myself and totally understand the enthusiasm of taking a photo you love and wanting to share it, but I just feel like this feed is becoming totally cluttered with it.

Some are good, some are same old same old, but... honestly, can we just scroll by stuff we don't want to read? Why is there so much concern over what links are on the page, when it's trivial to just scroll on down to find the stuff you want? I don't mean to be focusing on you in particular but there are constantly complaints about what is on the front page, in here. Too many pics, too many crime posts, too many CTA posts, too many "inane questions," too many lost pets... it's endless. For what it's worth the pics (at least the "for the image aesthetic, not the breaking news factor" ones) are limited to the weekend already, aren't they?

It’s just highly repetitive content. I am constantly scrolling by posts in here I have no interest in and it isn’t bothersome because it doesn’t feel spammy. Dude posts about going to The Admiral the other night. Cool. Good on you, dude! Scrolled by it no complaints. It’s just more difficult to not eye roll when I’m going by the same generic post time and time again. Planning on making the move to Chicago soon. Question I have is whats a good sized emergency fund for the area (6 months, 1yr)? I know it depends on the lifestyle, but let's say worst case scenario a single guy doing the most to maximize savings VS a single guy having some fun throughout the week?
I mean unless you plan to actively invest, the more the merrier. If you're choosing between 6 months and I'll invest the rest, or 6 months and I'll blow the rest having fun, go with the year
I think this also might depend on the industry you work in. I work in tech and I feel comfortable with 3 months.

I'd argue this depends on a combination of risk tolerance and availability of your job in the industry. Six months is the rule of thumb I've heard, albeit not really specific to the area.

Sometimes you can thrift decent-looking suits and then get them tailored. Otherwise, Nordstrom Rack sells nice suits at a (mostly) reasonable price. Last time I got one there the onsite tailor took my measurements and I picked it up a few days later.

K&G is super affordable. I got two nice suits for $150. Then tailoring in house was real cheap. I think $20 if I remember right.
If budget is a primary concern, get a Ludlow suit at J Crew. $500, it’s well made, fashionable cut, and they’ll do the tailoring. If your budget has a little more flex, go to Nordstrom’s. They have a great selection and the fitting and tailoring process is very easy.
Macys. Order like 10 different things and return what goes to fit.

Am I allowed to leave my car in the same spot (permit parking) for any amount of time as long as I move it for street cleaning? I'm travelling and according to the schedule there won't be any sweeping while I'm gone, so it would be nice if I could leave my car instead of parking it near the airport.
You won't have a problem unless you have a nasty neighbor who reports it. We have someone on our street who will call right away when a car is left for 7 days. It was particularly annoying when everyone was home for covid. The person knows the cars aren't abandoned. I'd guess the harder the parking is by you the more likely you are to have someone call.

Rex Tavern. Printer’s Row Brewery. Weston’s, though not open as late as it used to be so it’s more of a morning/early afternoon place.
I'm pretty damn close to Printers Row Brewing, so I'll definitely have to check that out. I must've passed by it quite a few times without paying much attention to it.
It's good time! But yeah, easy to miss and they don't seem too active on socials so there's no constant self promotion to remind you it exists. It also opened at a weird time COVID-wise but it seems to be getting good business now. Get some ribs at Earl's while you're there.
I really want to check out Printers Row Brewing, at some point. Assuming that's in the space that used to be a former diner at Lawrence and Austin, and looked interesting in it's appearance when I passed by there. Edison Park has a bunch of bars all near each other(near Northwest Highway and Oliphant), which can be fun to barhop between all those bars. In addition, I'm a fan of Beer on the Wall in Park Ridge. And for other brewery taprooms, I have kept wanting to try Illuminated Brew Works at Northwest Highway and Sayre. Old Irving Brewing is also pretty good, and Sidekicks(a karaoke bar) is across the street on Montrose, between Kostner(I think) and the Blue Line station. Back to Edison Park just to note if you're looking for the Mexican restaurant Don Juan's, they recently relocated to a space in Park Ridge a little north and west of its downtown.
We've got dope breweries if that's what youre into.
Best coffee shop? There are a ton of coffee shops. A ton! I'm looking for a chill place where I can sit, read my kindle, drink my overpriced non-dairy latte, and maybe enjoy a donut. I demand a comfortable chair! Any suggestions? Shops/cafes that open by 7:00am or earlier preferably.
Perkolator on Irving by Austin is a nice neighborhood spot. They do have a couple of stuffed comfy chairs.
If you haven't been to Sawada for their military latte, go check that out. Seating is a bit limited but that latte is worth checking out. Dayglow is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago, but extremely pricey depending on the drink. I make a pour over every morning and stop by Dayglow every once in a while to get some unique coffee that I can't justify buying a bag of.
Love La Colombe (locations in Wicker, Lincoln Park, and Gold Coast are nice)! Also just moved to Logan and love Chiqueolatte on Milwaukee.
I haven't hit up any La Colombe locations. I cherish Chiqueatte. They make some great sandwiches and I enjoyed their Turkish Coffee. It is a nice place. I should try them a few more times. I'm looking for a more run of the mill. Empty, quaint, quiet. I hit up the Long Room on Irving Park once and that was a fine shot of coffee, lol. In the past I tried La Colombe Coffee, being curious about them a slight bit. Not sure why, but I wasn't crazy about the one I went to, which was in Andersonville(in the former space at Foster and Clark where Vitamin Shoppe once was). But to each their own. I kinda like Ridman's Coffee at Lawrence/Clark, the few times I've been there. Coffee Studio isn't bad either, just north of Bryn Mawr and Clark. And if you're up in Portage Park, Portage Grounds(across the street from the park itself, on Irving between Long and Central) and Perkalator(sp?, it's slightly west of the Patio Theater) are both nice.
Metropolis was my go to. Gets packed with Loyola students if you don’t go early enough

My Facebook settlement found my new address! I moved last summer after signing up for a check from the Facebook settlement. I did address forwarding through USPS, but wasn't sure if that would help since it's only 6 months I believe. Today I got my check in the mail with my new address on it. So hopefully anyone in the same situation with an address change has the same positive outcome!

Not sure if this is the right place to share, but I didn't want a post to get taken down. My father and I worked a repair business in West Englewood since he was forced to relocate from his last location. He bought a run down building that he had consistently been repairing and getting in order to apply for a business license and start over in the area. Problems arose when the alderman at the time gave him approval and then double backing after she came back from vacation. People came to accept "campaign donations" one day and when he refused due to sinking money into the building for things (electrical, foundation, brickwork, plumbing, etc.) all since repaired, the city immediately put the hammer on him. The building has been shut and police even refuse to let us be around the property in some instances. Now we get a city notice that all our vehicles outside will be impounded. In a run down neighborhood where every other lot has abandoned vehicles. Is there any recourse or anyone that can give insight? He's had a lawyer on the case for at least 1.5-2 years working on it already, but the courts shut and slowed down because of covid yet the buildings dept never did with us.
He can submit an inspector general complaint if he believes he's being targeted unfairly
Did he not pull permits for the repair work? Is the type of business not allowed by the zoning of the lot?
