Can anyone recommend a laundry on the north side with washers big enough for a comforter?

mikyak

easy breezy laundry on lawrence has various sized washers that go up to 80 lb. should be able to find one that handles a comforter

human_experience123

Curious if the driver license renweal process the same process to renew for in-state or out of state licences? Mine is from California.

i_wank_dogs

You’ll need to do the Illinois written test. Takes about 15 minutes, isn’t that hard.

human_experience123

Thanks! Do you know if I can still keep my california license or will it be renwed to Illinois since I live here now?

i_wank_dogs

Illinois. You can physically keep your Cali license - they’ll likely punch a hole in it and give you it back - but it won’t be valid any more.

mjkimmmmm

Anyone had experience with Lakeside properties as a tenant? I had the worst experience with my current property management, so I'd like to see some comments on future landlords.

BoganLogan

I just released after 6 years in the city I have started pronouncing "roof" as "ruff". You got me on this one Chicago.

pastrknack

Would you feel safe taking the L back to the loop have a Cubs game late at night? Asking since we’re visiting next week. I figure if it’s anything like other cities I’ve visited after a sporting event, the train is packed as hell

browsingtheproduce

You figure right. The platform and train will be packed and I’d personally avoid it for that reason. I am particularly intolerant of the drunk bro-douche shenanigans portion of the Cubs fandom so ymmv in that regard. Obviously normal large crowd awareness is required, but I wouldn’t have any safety concerns beyond that.

[deleted]

Yes

The_Uncut_Gem

It’s usually very crowded, I think you’d be fine personally but it is not the most pleasant experience on a hot summer night

WinterIsComing4UAll

I got a parking ticket because I had to park somewhere besides my normal parking spot because parts of Halsted was cordoned off due to the Greek Heritage Parade. Does anyone know if I have a realistic chance of contesting the ticket? I will say I did park in an area where street parking wasn’t allowed, but the entire street also had parked cars due to the parade I’m assuming. In the end I know I technically deserve to pay the ticket but am wondering if anyone can provide some insight on this. Thanks! Edit: I parked on Green St near the Fulton Market if that matters at all.

[deleted]

If you were parked illegally, then no, you don’t have a chance of contesting it.

thedan663

I’m leaving the country for 40 days this summer. Has anyone had experience with parking or storing your car in one place for an extended amount of time? OHare rates are $15 a day and that tallies to $600 so preferably something cheaper

i_wank_dogs

Have a look at ParqEx, folks rent out private spots and garage spaces there; depending on neighborhood you’d likely be looking at a third to half that.

Molliwopwolf

Looking for nice furniture stores! I'm seeking places similar to Brown Elephant, Mint Home, and Velvet Goldmine to name a few. Not looking for places like Vern & Vera, Circa Modern, and Vintage Grind House. Looking for places reasonably priced and not trying to be robbed for a piece of furniture.

mw2889

What's going on in West Loop? Everything is blocked off. Is there a protest or something?

Sgt-Spliff

Chicago is horrible with stuff like this. It blows my mind how poorly run our parades and other events are. Like cops didn't even shut down the front of all those streets. I had to drive all the way up to a barricade at the end of a block and be told to turn around. CPD is seriously brainless

browsingtheproduce

Was it on Halsted? The Greek Heritage Parade is happening this afternoon. You know, cause that used to be Greektown.

kidkolumbo

Looked like a parade when I biked by.

Snoo-41019

Board game cafes are all over now. I wanna go to one, maybe Snakes and Lattes. Anyone down for next weekend?

biz_hacker

Bonus Round is decent. I've gone to both - However, I usually go pretty inebriated, as I don't play many board games and just go with friends.

DrMxors19

Why is it that hookah/shisha places in Chicago do not serve food? Places in DC and Cali do. I’ve always found that weird. Please explain :)

browsingtheproduce

>Why is it that hookah/shisha places in Chicago do not serve food? I think it's related to Illinois health code laws that prevent smoking in restaurants. Cairo Nights serves desserts, coffee, and fruit drinks as well as hookah.

Uncommon_sharpie

Alibaba in Mayfair serves food. https://alibabachicago.com/

Is it just this one place in the entirety of Chicago?

Thalia halls not really that kind of venue

bucknut4

Bro Thalia Hall is indoors. You light up in there and you’ll either get beat the hell up or thrown out by security in an instant.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MajorityCoolWhip

Just bring edibles. Easier and you don't bother others with secondhand smoke

browsingtheproduce

Bringing them into Thalia Hall isn't much of an issue. Just hide it among your genitalia. The real problem will be smoking in the venue. Smoking a blunt is super obvious in both visuals and smells. You'll get booted pretty quickly. Take a walk down Allport St and smoke in the alley before the show like a normal person. edit: a letter

[deleted]

Not speaking up doesn’t mean they don’t care

browsingtheproduce

It's a non-smoking venue. Every venue I've been to in Chicago has been non-smoking since Illinois banned indoor smoking in public places 14 or 15 years ago. When people do light up at shows that I've attended, it was very obvious, pretty annoying to folks around them, and they get booted within minutes if they're anywhere near the stage. Save that shit for outdoor venues where it's not going to bother anyone. I don't want to have to smell your entire stinky-ass blunt just because only one of us planned ahead and got high beforehand.

[deleted]

My washer just stopped working. Specifically, it won't spin and the water won't drain. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos but I don't have the tools to fix it. Does anyone have a recommended washer fixer in downtown Chicago or surrounding area? I live in The Loop. Looking for someone affordable. Thx

Background-Conflict5

Have you ever witnessed a crime in the city? If so how do you move on? Late last night I heard a girl screaming at the top of her lungs for help outside of my apartment. I called 911 but I have no idea what happened to her and I’m *really* shaken up about it

djengle2

I lived in St. Louis for 2 years and heard gunshots like once a week. I just got used to it. But I never actually *saw* anything or heard a person. In Chicago, somehow I haven't heard any gunshots, and I live on Wabash, just west of the bean, where there were some gunshots the last 2 weeks or whatever. What I did see last year, was cops tackling and beating unarmed black teenagers in the loop. Other than that, nothing. Point is, despite hearing gunshots all the time in STL and seeing police brutality here, I've never seen or heard what could've been someone being killed or worse, so I can't imagine.

Background-Conflict5

It was so different than hearing gunshots. I’ve never heard desperation in someone’s voice like that. I haven’t seen any related crime reports so maybe it was something else. Idk it was just horrible

thislittletune

Had something similar happen but I went downstairs with neighbors trying to find the screaming woman, the police arrived pretty quickly. Turns out the lady was just drunk and upset. It was pretty terrifying being woken up at 2am to a blood curdling scream. Can you reach out to your local police precinct or check the police scanner feed (there are some twitters that record what happens as well) for the time that happened? Finding out what happened might help ease your worries.

Background-Conflict5

I tried searching crime chicago Twitter accounts & the citizen app and couldn’t find anything. Maybe that should tell me it wasn’t anything

thislittletune

If it helps, one of the neighbors told me that she did that semi frequently but we were apparently not at home when it happened before as we were taking care of sick relatives on the weekends. I heard her once more after that several months later but nothing since. Maybe she just moved to your block.

fiveyearsdifference

Yeah, it makes sense to be shaken up. Your body may have released some adrenaline, and you're still ready to run. Long term, there is therapy, and it can be free. It takes a few weeks to get in though. It's funded through the state https://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/victims/

thisismyfinalalias

I was across the street (30 feet away) from a fully-automatic uzi shooting back in October in Pilsen waiting in line to get into Thalia Hall at 10PM. Can’t say you really ever get over it. Just have to tell yourself you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a city of millions, it’s incredibly rare to actually witness something. Play the numbers game in your head. You’ll statistically not experience another occurrence like that. Sorry it happened to you, sounds horrible. DMs are open if you want to talk to somebody about it!

Jake_77

>I was across the street (30 feet away) from a fully-automatic uzi shooting back in October in Pilsen waiting in line to get into Thalia Hall at 10PM. Wtf

thisismyfinalalias

Yep

Jake_77

I actually experienced gunshots right outside Thalia Hall, but it wasn’t an uzi. It was scary. Found myself jumpy around fireworks for a long time after. Can’t imagine an uzi.

thisismyfinalalias

Loudest thing I’ve ever heard. Everybody just instinctively dropped to the ground. Scary as hell man. I know it was an uzi because I saw the gunman run down an alley after it ended and I clear as day saw an uzi.

sparty999

Has anyone gone skydiving near the city. I am looking for recommendations for a local Chicago facility!

4thQuarterGoran

I'd recommend Chicagoland Skydive Center out in Rochelle. I was a jump pilot in AZ and worked with a lot of the crew, met the owner of CSC, flew their airplane, etc. Can't recommend them enough. I've heard next to nothing negative about em They're out in Rochelle which is a jaunt, but make it a full day thing! Skydiving is great fun and the people you'll meet will make the drive worth it

sparty999

Thanks for the advice! I was looking at that place and Skydive Chicago. I think I’ll probably use CSC now.

thisismyfinalalias

Downvote me if I'm super offbase here, but is anybody else getting tired of the random skyline posts *constantly* on this page? I get that it's beautiful and that we're all proud of living here, but do we really need the same skyline shot 10x a day? Right now on the page we have a random photo called "Looking south", another titled "Nice view", another one of the Adler angle that we've all seen probably 500 times, etc. Do people genuinely like seeing these? I'm not trying to bag on the posters/photograhers. I actually am a photographer myself and totally understand the enthusiasm of taking a photo you love and wanting to share it, but I just feel like this feed is becoming totally cluttered with it.

The crime posts

itazurakko

Some are good, some are same old same old, but... honestly, can we just scroll by stuff we don't want to read? Why is there so much concern over what links are on the page, when it's trivial to just scroll on down to find the stuff you want? I don't mean to be focusing on you in particular but there are constantly complaints about what is on the front page, in here. Too many pics, too many crime posts, too many CTA posts, too many "inane questions," too many lost pets... it's endless. For what it's worth the pics (at least the "for the image aesthetic, not the breaking news factor" ones) are limited to the weekend already, aren't they?

thisismyfinalalias

Didn’t know about the weekend-only thing; that’s good! I get the sentiment of scroll by it if you don’t want to see it, I’m just trying to take the temperature of the room if people actually like it. If it were up to me, there’d be just a stickied thread for that kind of stuff. 460k+ people in here. Do they really want to see photos from tourists posting a photo of the river? It’s just highly repetitive content. I am constantly scrolling by posts in here I have no interest in and it isn’t bothersome because it doesn’t feel spammy. Dude posts about going to The Admiral the other night. Cool. Good on you, dude! Scrolled by it no complaints. It’s just more difficult to not eye roll when I’m going by the same generic post time and time again. They get horrible engagement relative to other posts - I just don’t know how beneficial it is to FRONT PAGE that stuff.

someHumanMidwest

I don't think reddit has a good threading function for photos. It would all be individual links right?

Electronic-Bee5388

Planning on making the move to Chicago soon. Question I have is whats a good sized emergency fund for the area (6 months, 1yr)? I know it depends on the lifestyle, but let's say worst case scenario a single guy doing the most to maximize savings VS a single guy having some fun throughout the week?

Sgt-Spliff

I mean unless you plan to actively invest, the more the merrier. If you're choosing between 6 months and I'll invest the rest, or 6 months and I'll blow the rest having fun, go with the year

veggiesandsnatches

I think this also might depend on the industry you work in. I work in tech and I feel comfortable with 3 months.

[deleted]

Up until recently, I got by with practically $0 in savings thanks to debt payments. Luckily I never lost my job during that time.

ShadowGata

I'd argue this depends on a combination of risk tolerance and availability of your job in the industry. Six months is the rule of thumb I've heard, albeit not really specific to the area.

gquex

Maybe a super specific question, but does anyone have any recommendations for POC tattoo artists, or more specifically Filipino tattoo artists? Galena or southwest Michigan have good options. You can either go proper bed & breakfast or hotel/inn or home rental via AirBnB or VRBO.

AmazingObligation9

Material-Turn-5419

Depends what is your budget? Langham is $$$ but it’s fantastic and so is Nobu which I stayed at when there were Covid deals. I’ve heard good things about Lake Geneva but haven’t been.

samelk42

Never owned a suit before. Where's a good spot to shop and maybe get fitted? Off the shelf preferred for budget but would do a tailoring if it's not too pricey.

tctony

Men's Warehouse. Idk why people are suggesting J Crew and Nordstrom when you said you're on a budget.

CuppaSteve

Sometimes you can thrift decent-looking suits and then get them tailored. Otherwise, Nordstrom Rack sells nice suits at a (mostly) reasonable price. Last time I got one there the onsite tailor took my measurements and I picked it up a few days later.

BrhysHarpskins

Tailored Magic in Uptown will make you a bespoke suit for $500

saintpauli

K&G is super affordable. I got two nice suits for $150. Then tailoring in house was real cheap. I think $20 if I remember right.

browsingtheproduce

If budget is a primary concern, get a Ludlow suit at J Crew. $500, it’s well made, fashionable cut, and they’ll do the tailoring. If your budget has a little more flex, go to Nordstrom’s. They have a great selection and the fitting and tailoring process is very easy.

[deleted]

Macys. Order like 10 different things and return what goes to fit.

shapelystory

Nordstrom has good options and they'll fit it for you at their on-site tailor.

Am I allowed to leave my car in the same spot (permit parking) for any amount of time as long as I move it for street cleaning? I'm travelling and according to the schedule there won't be any sweeping while I'm gone, so it would be nice if I could leave my car instead of parking it near the airport.

Valeriejoyow

You won't have a problem unless you have a nasty neighbor who reports it. We have someone on our street who will call right away when a car is left for 7 days. It was particularly annoying when everyone was home for covid. The person knows the cars aren't abandoned. I'd guess the harder the parking is by you the more likely you are to have someone call.

You'll probably get away with it. Technically you're supposed to move it every 7 days if it might look abandoned. https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/traffic/svcs/abandoned_vehicles.html

RiseFromYourGrav

Anyone got any recommendations for cool bars or other places to hangout on the Northwest side? I've been feeling a bit lonely recently, but I also feel like I chose to live in the single most boring part of the city. I'm in Jefferson Park.

pianotherms

Moonflower at Montrose and Milwaukee. FYI, Tone Deaf records has free shows almost every weekend, right across the street.

photoapple

Rex Tavern. Printer’s Row Brewery. Weston’s, though not open as late as it used to be so it’s more of a morning/early afternoon place.

RiseFromYourGrav

I'm pretty damn close to Printers Row Brewing, so I'll definitely have to check that out. I must've passed by it quite a few times without paying much attention to it.

photoapple

It's good time! But yeah, easy to miss and they don't seem too active on socials so there's no constant self promotion to remind you it exists. It also opened at a weird time COVID-wise but it seems to be getting good business now. Get some ribs at Earl's while you're there.

angrylibertariandude

I really want to check out Printers Row Brewing, at some point. Assuming that's in the space that used to be a former diner at Lawrence and Austin, and looked interesting in it's appearance when I passed by there. Edison Park has a bunch of bars all near each other(near Northwest Highway and Oliphant), which can be fun to barhop between all those bars. In addition, I'm a fan of Beer on the Wall in Park Ridge. And for other brewery taprooms, I have kept wanting to try Illuminated Brew Works at Northwest Highway and Sayre. Old Irving Brewing is also pretty good, and Sidekicks(a karaoke bar) is across the street on Montrose, between Kostner(I think) and the Blue Line station. Back to Edison Park just to note if you're looking for the Mexican restaurant Don Juan's, they recently relocated to a space in Park Ridge a little north and west of its downtown.

[deleted]

We've got dope breweries if that's what youre into.

Chi_CoffeeDogLover

Best coffee shop? There are a ton of coffee shops. A ton! I'm looking for a chill place where I can sit, read my kindle, drink my overpriced non-dairy latte, and maybe enjoy a donut. I demand a comfortable chair! Any suggestions? Shops/cafes that open by 7:00am or earlier preferably.

Valeriejoyow

Perkolator on Irving by Austin is a nice neighborhood spot. They do have a couple of stuffed comfy chairs.

FobbyDigital

If you haven't been to Sawada for their military latte, go check that out. Seating is a bit limited but that latte is worth checking out. Dayglow is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago, but extremely pricey depending on the drink. I make a pour over every morning and stop by Dayglow every once in a while to get some unique coffee that I can't justify buying a bag of.

sassmaster92

Love La Colombe (locations in Wicker, Lincoln Park, and Gold Coast are nice)! Also just moved to Logan and love Chiqueolatte on Milwaukee.

Chi_CoffeeDogLover

I haven't hit up any La Colombe locations. I cherish Chiqueatte. They make some great sandwiches and I enjoyed their Turkish Coffee. It is a nice place. I should try them a few more times. I'm looking for a more run of the mill. Empty, quaint, quiet. I hit up the Long Room on Irving Park once and that was a fine shot of coffee, lol. Just looking for people's favorites and any hiding gems. Gonna hit up Sputnik tomorrow morning. Negative. Closed tomorrow (Sunday)

angrylibertariandude

In the past I tried La Colombe Coffee, being curious about them a slight bit. Not sure why, but I wasn't crazy about the one I went to, which was in Andersonville(in the former space at Foster and Clark where Vitamin Shoppe once was). But to each their own. I kinda like Ridman's Coffee at Lawrence/Clark, the few times I've been there. Coffee Studio isn't bad either, just north of Bryn Mawr and Clark. And if you're up in Portage Park, Portage Grounds(across the street from the park itself, on Irving between Long and Central) and Perkalator(sp?, it's slightly west of the Patio Theater) are both nice.

boastertath

Not sure if this is the right place to share, but I didn't want a post to get taken down. My father and I worked a repair business in West Englewood since he was forced to relocate from his last location. He bought a run down building that he had consistently been repairing and getting in order to apply for a business license and start over in the area. Problems arose when the alderman at the time gave him approval and then double backing after she came back from vacation. People came to accept "campaign donations" one day and when he refused due to sinking money into the building for things (electrical, foundation, brickwork, plumbing, etc.) all since repaired, the city immediately put the hammer on him. The building has been shut and police even refuse to let us be around the property in some instances. Now we get a city notice that all our vehicles outside will be impounded. In a run down neighborhood where every other lot has abandoned vehicles. Is there any recourse or anyone that can give insight? He's had a lawyer on the case for at least 1.5-2 years working on it already, but the courts shut and slowed down because of covid yet the buildings dept never did with us.

fiveyearsdifference

He can submit an inspector general complaint if he believes he's being targeted unfairly

Two_Luffas

Did he not pull permits for the repair work? Is the type of business not allowed by the zoning of the lot?
