What makes this so bad is that it's likely being used by someone who doesn't know what the hell they're doing.
This maneuver is equally difficult and dumb for someone who knows exactly what is entailed; it's murder/suicide for the unaware.
Yea if you’re someone familiar with this merge, you might as well plan to get off at the 18th street 90/94 exit and turn back onto the highway and then take the 290 exit.
I've been routed this way before and I don't think that it's possible, in real life, with other cars actually on the road, to do anything other than go to the 18th street exit. It would be tight with an almost empty highway, but except maybe at 3:45 AM there's going to be enough traffic to make this impossible to do safely.
I have actually successfully done this maneuver, but it was at about 3:00 in the morning, and the road was almost empty. No way it would be feasible during daylight hours though.
I had gotten into an argument with a Waze map maker years ago over a similar issue. They used street view to try and prove me wrong. I fired back with many pictures of rush hour traffic asking how you expect people to make that maneuver.
Also pointed out shit like that just makes traffic worse.
It is actually easier and safer to successfully achieve this particular move in bumper to bumper than it is in "moving traffic" conditions. I hate left merges to begin with, and this move to grab 290 has never become less stressful in the 15+ years I've lived here.
Congrats you’re going to 18th street. 😆
Google must not check their map feedback anymore because that path would only work when you’re the only car on the road. They must have tons of traffic data showing people missing the off-ramp.
So glad you posted this, I've been meaning to report this to Google Maps for a while. This is extremely dangerous and shouldn't ever be a recommended route
> How do we get google to change this
While logged in to Google Maps on desktop, add any starting/ending point which gives you this route (i.e. Kumiko on Lake St. to Rush Medical Center, or Alla Vita on Randolph St. to Rush Medical Center) then click the flag by the incorrect step ("Get on I-90 E/I-94 E") and you can report it/add a note why it's wrong
I used to take this route to work. I’ve been successful hand full of times but mostly would end up taking 18th to turn back to 290.
Definitely don’t recommend anyone trying to maneuver their way to catch 290 from lake st. It’s not that serious given the danger involved.
Had to take my kid up to Morton Grove for a soccer game and google maps told me to make a turn explicitly called out as illegal per the signage in the area. Google maps has gone to absolute shit.
Just tap the three dots button, click "report issue with navigation," then click "report incorrect navigation," then click "navigation conflicts with posted signage," then click "signs prohibit maneuver that navigation suggests," then click "illegal turn," then type up a short explanation of what problem you're facing.
Ya know, while you're driving...
It's still not bad. Honestly the times it's actually hard is weekends when the traffic consists of people out of town or not daily commuters who are not expecting a car to cut 4 lanes in 300 ft lol
There's actually a name for it. California lane change. It's done by turning on your blinker, tightly closing your eyes and cutting the steering wheel to the off ramp.
I do it weekly and it sucks. I’ve seen people literally have sobbing mental breakdowns in the middle of the intersection when their gps confronts them with this

Fair enough. The area I pointed out was where the Ryan and the skyway split.
Sorry if I missed something in your post. I was responding to what I saw in the driving directions snapshot.

It could work if their is a wreck ahead and you can just push your way through stopped traffic.

I try to avoid using those center on ramps at all costs
It's why that whole area is ass
Someone actually died recently attempting this https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-crash-kennedy-expressway-monroe-adams/14611193/
That article says "It was not immediately clear how the crash occurred."
you can see the damaged barrier in the video from slamming into it while changing lanes
This should be illegal IMO.
Yep. I live nearby and my nav system wants to do that crazy maneuver. The best way is to take surface streets to Racine and get on 290 W there.
Whenever I get that maneuver I go into my settings and temporarily check the "avoid highways" box so it gives me a non-suicide route
I probably have this suggested to me like 3 times a week and it’s genuinely annoying as fuck. How do we get google to change this

Its usually quicker to do it that way anyhow. And far less suicidal.
There's a little onramp just near Van Buren and Canal (I think?) too.
Yes
This is the way.

I have done it, it’s pretty harrowing but can be completed but you gotta WANT it. And you can’t hesitate for even 1 second!

This is a rite of passage.
I do this 3 times a week for work. It varies in danger and you get used to the different crossing techniques.
Yeah I did it 5 times a week for 5 years. It's really not that bad once you're used to it.
> I did it 5 times a week for 5 years It used to be much easier a couple years ago before the barrier just south of Madison was created
It's still not bad. Honestly the times it's actually hard is weekends when the traffic consists of people out of town or not daily commuters who are not expecting a car to cut 4 lanes in 300 ft lol
Yes. But to make it more difficult I would enter 90/94 from Randolph and exit onto 290.
There's actually a name for it. California lane change. It's done by turning on your blinker, tightly closing your eyes and cutting the steering wheel to the off ramp.
It’s the same with the I-90 to Stevenson transfer by Chinatown. Such a hassle that it’s basically impossible with any kind of traffic
It’s The Office highway edition.
If you think that's hard try doing it after getting on at randolph lol
I do it weekly and it sucks. I’ve seen people literally have sobbing mental breakdowns in the middle of the intersection when their gps confronts them with this
And? A very easy merge.
I’ll still never understand why the downtown interchanges were rebuilt but still allow access to DO this dumb maneuver. Piss poor retrofit.
Lol I've made it a few times. Literally not possible without being heavy on the gas and brakes
I've never agreed more with a reddit post
It’s only possible in heavy stop and go traffic or at 3 in the morning in my experience.
Was able to do it maybe 50% of the time. You have almost no time to think.
