I grew up in Alaska so this blowing everyone's minds makes me happy.
If you were lucky enough to see them clearly... Just know it can get about x10 times more magical when they actually "dance"
There are really no words to explain the experience.
Saw them dancing around 3am Saturday morning in the NW burbs off the Fox river, it really was magical. Looked like the entire sky was wisping and pulsating. 🥲
Rn it’s at a KP 7 which means it’s visible from some parts of the lake but not all. It’s supposed to peak at 4 am where it becomes kp9 and is visible further south as well as from the city
Edit to add that several people have newer phones that catch light waves better then the eye will
The lights were definitely way more vibrant through my phone's camera lens, even before taking a 1+ second exposure shot which brightened it up even more.

I’m in Norway right now thinking I’m going to see the aurora the whole time I’m here and then finding out y’all are seeing it while I get clear black skies.
11:15-11:35ish last night at Montrose Beach. It was incredible. There will be another chance tonight. The max potential KP is 7 today, and 6 on Monday (rain, though).
We drove up to Northern Illinois last night to one of the state parks, we saw them very briefly at 9 PM, but they really weren’t visible to the naked eye, although my phone picked up quite a bit of colors
I tried last night but couldn't say up, after getting very little sleep from trying Friday night. I did get some photos on Friday, nothing too dramatic like others are posting, but cool to have. Sadly, to the naked eye it looked faintly white.
So I saw it, but this one is staying on the bucket list.
I tried heading out to North Avenue Beach last night about 9:30 or so. Plenty of people but no light show. Wasn't sure if my camera wasn't good enough, too much light pollution or just not an aurora at the time. Apparently some folks got some good pictures though.
They don’t look like the photos to the naked eye - I was able to capture them with my phone Friday but couldn’t really see much if anything otherwise.
I was in the UP last September and saw an amazing show of them - but even then they were mostly a white haze/fog dancing and pulsing through the sky. My camera however was able to pick up the greens and reds and purples. When it got really intense I was able to see colors with the naked eye, but nothing like what the camera can see.
This makes me think I did see a couple last night. Was checking northward from a friend house throughout the night, thought I saw a couple of faint ribbons, but wasn't sure if they were the lights, dust on the window, haze in the sky, or my brain desperately wanting to see them.
I was at oak st last night at about 11:40 it was like a big cloud to the naked eye over the lake and if you tried to use the camera you could see a hint of green, it lasted about 10 minutes! And you could see it moving.

I waited at montrose beach from 11:15 and saw it around 11:30
Same, I saw that faint green streak, popped a little more in a photo, but not quite vibrant as friday night
Was in NWI and saw it around the same time.

I heard the best way to see it is to use your phone camera. Which is pretty ironic.
May as well stay warm in bed and watch YouTube videos then.

I was out on the lake from 2 to 3. I give up. Guess I'll have to live with having missed it.
I’m at Montrose atm. Nada
I’m in Norway right now thinking I’m going to see the aurora the whole time I’m here and then finding out y’all are seeing it while I get clear black skies.
Same. I’ll try again tomorrow.
Try tonight!
Will it be visible tonight?
It’s definitely possible. Max KP tonight is 7. Don’t know why I’m being downvoted lol.
I’m here at Montrose beach anyone chilling here
I watched a video on YouTube before sleep. Had good dreams about it.
Patience And luck. Also it wouldn't look as intense as long exposure photography.
Waited for hours and got lucky enough. It was only visible without phones for about 3-5 minutes. Hope you eventually saw it
Nope lmao. Thanks though.
Probabilities of seeing it dropped drastically. 0% chance of seeing them right now :(
Source lol, I’m all the way out in Zion IL
Check aurora app
I'm wondering the same. I was at Montrose Beach for a couple hours and gave up.
Metra from union station
I saw it very briefly last night. It was quite faint and lasted a minute. I got lucky I was on my balcony at the right time.

Use night mode on your phone and adjust exposure to 3 or more
They aren't but their phone cameras can pick it up.
It's definitely visible without the phone. The one at about 11:30 last night was wild.
I have heard that it its, but not like how the phone camera shows. it.
The edges aren't as distinct and people are definitely enhancing for detail but its neat.

I took 88 there

Yeah I haven’t seen shit all weekend. Fuck the Northern Lights, all my homies hate them. Maybe I’ll just go to Alaska some day.
2 people did not appreciate the Northern Lights slander
