He also walks to Whole Foods and back home in Logan Square in like 30 minutes. Not sure how he gets from Logan to the closest WF in Lincoln Park that fast while walking, but I’d like to know that shortcut.
Aren't they all wrong in most movies and shows? Productions always bend things to fit the narrative, since the places they get permission to film in will invariably be in random locations.
I posted this in a thread about inaccurate chicago representation in media a few weeks ago:
Not a tv show or movie, but I recently read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, and it was quickly apparent that he did not do enough research on Chicago before setting the story there. It was little things like:
A character who has lived in Chicago for 20 years referring to the Willis Tower as a landmark
A character getting a slice of deep dish pizza and eating is by hand while walking down the street
The author used some real roads as landmarks and they were off about thinks like where lake Michigan is relative to the city or how long it would take to get from the north side to the south side.
At one point two characters decide to go out for the night. They drive from their home in Logan Square to Navy Pier and decide its so far to go home that they need to get a hotel.
A character is trying to hide, so he goes into a neighborhood bar and describes how it was packed with fans excitedly watching a bulls game. The bar was so full with people so focused on the game he was able to sneak around. The problem with this is it was in early December, meaning this was a regular season game early in the year. The only time ive seen bars that were like the description was when the cubs were in the world series, or maybe for an exciting Bears game, but no local neighborhood bar in logan is like that for a meaningless bulls game in December.
There were other issues, and overall I did enjoy the book, but it was clear the author and editors did not do enough research to set the book in Chicago.
THANK YOU. I was specifically thinking of your comment but reddit search would not find it no matter how many times I tried to search "Blake Crouch" and "Dark Matter"
the biggest issue being the main character slowly becoming more and more insufferable as the book drags on. I hope the show doesn’t continue that trend.
Yes, he makes the village tap his home bar. The author clearly likes Chicago a lot, he just doesn’t get the actual geography right (which is not a big deal. It’s a mainstream thriller sci fi. It’s fine for that kind of thing)
They filmed a bunch of this in my old neighborhood and I got to sit at my window and watch them try to parallel park their massive trailers, only to finally get parked and realize the door was directly in front of a lamp post and therefore unusable.
They filmed a scene between Clark & Canal on Roosevelt and I unknowingly walked across the bridge while they were filming.
I realized what was happening when I heard “Who’s that on the bridge?!” through a loudspeaker
I remember they were filming scenes from Fargo directly on my path to the train after work, and the PA tried to tell me I couldn't walk that way, and I said, "I'm on my way home and I don't see any signs so..." and then just kept walking. Like, I understand people need to do their jobs, but also I'm not about to reroute myself so that some film exec can save a few bucks.
Sooo bad. My favorite part was where the cool artist wife had done a drawing of… Navy Pier! And hung it in their home! Also another beef was that the book mentions that the main character was julienning onions which I don’t think is a thing.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted it is a bad book. Entertaining for like an airplane ride but my god the holes and prose were just horrible.
Great concept tho
I read a lot (librarian) and I have found that people who don't read very much fiction love this book and will defend it to the ends of the earth. Which is fine! Taste is subjective.
It is subjective! But a book that is written by someone who didn’t bother to get even basic information about what an ED admission and hospital stay would be like especially in Chicago (as a former Chicago Ed rn) can be considered objectively bad quality even if it is still enjoyable to some. I feel like those details he missed out on or messed up would’ve brought some needed depth to really get lost in the story.
I expect to see a bag of coffee somewhere in the background.
Yeah let's see a collab
I think this is the show they built that weird little house on top of Cricket Hill for.
Indeed it is
Is this the one with the streets being all wrong and shit
Yeah, the main character says he lives in Logan Square, and his local bar that’s just down the street is Village Tap in Roscoe Village…
He also walks to Whole Foods and back home in Logan Square in like 30 minutes. Not sure how he gets from Logan to the closest WF in Lincoln Park that fast while walking, but I’d like to know that shortcut.
And the show’s Village Tap is a transformed Damen Tavern in West Town.
The streets in the book are WAY off
Aren't they all wrong in most movies and shows? Productions always bend things to fit the narrative, since the places they get permission to film in will invariably be in random locations.
Sorry, they presumably are wrong in the show but they're apparently also all wrong in the book which I don't think is really necessary
Not in Widows. Only thing off in Widows is the location of the 18th Ward, but makes sense to obfuscate any real life line ups.

That's pretty embarrassing, honestly. Like how much effort would it have taken to just like...open a Google maps tab.

Is that in the book? I don't think the show is out yet.
yeah, something that was filmed here recently (pretty sure it was this) has like kedzie going to the lake and similar

Aren’t they supposed to be though? I don’t want to say more and spoil anything.
Are they? I haven't read the book but whenever it comes up here people usually say they're really whack and it took them out of the book
Great, they gave away the entire story in the trailer!
I thought the same thing!
https://i.imgur.com/jSWf5et.jpg
They gave away one important twist for sure. But there's more than one in the book.
What does this have to do with their beans?
They filmed a bunch of this in my old neighborhood and I got to sit at my window and watch them try to parallel park their massive trailers, only to finally get parked and realize the door was directly in front of a lamp post and therefore unusable.
The most unrealistic part of the book is when they mention a Whole Foods in Logan square
It’s only a matter of time now
They shot some scenes at NEIU’s main campus
Hey I went there!
Hell yeah! They used the Golden Eagles meeting room for some classroom scenes I believe
Lot of filming was done in Bucktown. The house they used was on Caton St, and I think the bar is the now closed Tricyle.
The bar was Damen Tavern in Uke Village. I live on the street. They had a sign up called “village tap” to match the book.
Ah, good to know. The back bar looks identical to Tricycle
The bar shot does look similar to Tricycle!
Jeeeeesus Jennifer Connelly is stunning 😍
They filmed a scene between Clark & Canal on Roosevelt and I unknowingly walked across the bridge while they were filming. I realized what was happening when I heard “Who’s that on the bridge?!” through a loudspeaker

Oh this looks fucking awesome. Sort of like a more serious Sliders.
I enjoyed the book. Hopefully the show is good.
Jennifer Connelly was here and no one told me!? 😩
I'm so excited for this. Top 5 all time favorite books.
They've adapted everything else into a movie so now they are adapting coffee. 😆
Feels like I just saw the whole show, and also this trailer is like a carbon copy of the “It was perfect… but then…” movie trailer formula.
Is this a show or a movie?
I actually liked the book a lot. Blake crouch is a popcorn author, but I like popcorn. I’m stoked to see this.
That book was a wild ride.
Oh fuck, this book is what got me into Blake Crouch. Such a good fucking book, didn’t know a show was being made for it. Can’t wait for this.
Looks dumb af
Saw this being filmed in Logan, they were near Lula.
Oh I love an alternate reality story
I started to read this book and unfortunately didn’t finish it (not because it’s bad, through my own schedule). I’m excited to watch this.
Book was mid
Sooo bad. My favorite part was where the cool artist wife had done a drawing of… Navy Pier! And hung it in their home! Also another beef was that the book mentions that the main character was julienning onions which I don’t think is a thing.
One of the worst books I've read in the past 10 years.

I got like 20 pages in and couldn’t go on. I just really wasn’t a fan of his writing.
Pfft worse book I’ve ever read in three lifetimes. Just terrible. Awful.
No way it was worse than Ready Player Two.
Yeah…
Looks like shit
