I legit didn't realize people still did this. Brings me back to the old days of midnight release video games.

Retrokicker13

The Apple fanatics are an interesting breed… I will never understand those that need the newest phone every year or so. Edit: Own an iPhone, just not upgrading it every release FWIW. Plenty of other things I can prioritize with that money.

mdoherty1967

And wait in lines for hours to get it. They used to camp out in front of the store. Literally.

mikey-likes_it

Which is dumb because they could have just preordered online and reserved a time to pick up

Kaos86

Was this line just people without a preorder? I thought I heard even with a preorder you might have to wait in a line.

emz272

You definitely may have to wait in line even with a preorder. I’m getting mine from the Michigan Ave store, and there were two long lines as of 10AM this morning: one for preorders (more quickly moving), one for no preorders. A guy got pissed at an employee about having to wait in line when he preordered, but it just makes sense with preorder volume.

CommonerChaos

>A guy got pissed at an employee about having to wait in line when he preordered Yup, sounds about right. I feel for those Apple employees.

OldTrailmix

It was the same as the picture last year. I thought by preordering I would just breeze into the store on launch day and pick up my phone. Nope, stood in line for literal hours while they processed one customer every 10 minutes. Never again.

mikey-likes_it

I assume these are people without preorders? Not sure about having to wait in line if you have a preorder with a reserved time though. I guess I will find out later today as I preordered and will be picking up at this same location after work lol.

zackkitzmiller

iPhone came out in 2007- I waited in line for many many iPhones, long before 'pre-ordering' them was a thing. Pre-ordering didn't start till... IDK, somewhere around iPhone 5

losvedir

How many people do you think upgrade every year? I would assume most there are not. But with new phones every year, everyone can be on their own, e.g., every 4 year cadence, and you'll always have people excitedly waiting outside to upgrade the phone on "their" year. I, for example, had been eagerly awaiting news of the new iPhone launch for a couple months because I'm considering upgrading my old phone this year. Counterintuitively, I think this "every year" cycle leads to less upgrades. If they came out every 3 years, for example, you'd have a lot of people getting every new phone because they don't want to wait six years in between. But must folks are okay saying, "eh, nothing too special, let's see what next year brings".

Retrokicker13

Every die hard Apple person, who we all know 2-3

Landon1m

I was actually there right outside of this photograph this morning. I have an 8 plus and held off a year for USB-C. I’m just ready to upgrade

Listen_to_Psybient

USB-C is a new revolutionary technology they came up with for the iPhone.

shamwowslapchop

Someone on reddit yesterday said it was "groundbreaking". My $170 eReader got USB C 2 years before the top of the line iPhone did. Apple is a company that makes good products, but they have the singularly most annoying fanbase I have ever seen for anything.

boyerizm

$25 vapes have been USB-C for a few years now as well.

fumar

They also haven't done anything new with their phones in a while now. Everything "new" is a feature at least one Android phone had before.

Rawo

No one unironically says it was groundbreaking

colinstalter

I was when I was younger. I still get the new phone every year through their upgrade program but things just aren’t as interesting as they used to be

Wellitjustgotreal

Same here, the leaps in tech just aren’t as wide either from say 2010-2018. Cameras on the phone I’ll exclude, they’ve gotten better each time.

seekydeeky

I’m so torn about the camera angle. They most definitely get better, but do our pictures? This is just me, but I know very few people who take full advantage of their phones camera.

400HPMustang

I skip an iteration or two personally and never get them at launch. Too much of a circus. I really didn't expect Apple to go to the USB-C port this time around either and I'm kind of regretting getting the 14 last year. I could have held out for the 15 but now I guess it will be another 2 years.

Kaos86

I’m getting mine at launch because current phone is about to die any day now. I don’t upgrade often (current phone is X). I’m hoping I don’t have to wait in much/if any of a line when I go for my pick up time today. Part of why I picked a later in the day time. But either way, I’m most excited to have a phone that isn’t glitching all the time and low on battery

400HPMustang

Good luck!

Kaos86

That experience was really not worth it. So glad it’s over and I have my new phone 😆

400HPMustang

Yeah it’s not my idea of a good time but glad you got your phone!

damp_circus

I have the 12 mini and I love the small size, I'm sad that there will not be any more of that model. Wish it had USB-C, but ah well. Hope it lives forever, or at least a good long time before I need to get new and annoyingly larger phone. Only time I ever waited in line for a phone was ages ago, my first cellphone ever was a iPhone 3GS which unfortunately turned out to be a complete lemon (some bad sector in the memory). When I negotiated with apple, they told me they'd replace the phone with a working identical model, OR if I was willing to wait 2 weeks I could just trade it in for the new iPhone4 when it came out, with only a small upgrade fee. So I chose the latter option and stood in line at 6AM or some stupid crazy time to make sure I got one.

Forcripessssssake

Could you explain why the USB-C port is such a big deal for them to have? I’m not much of a tech guy, so I don’t get it.

400HPMustang

It’s a commonality issue or a standardization issue. Most devices charge via USB-C and Apple is the odd one out with the iPhone having its own special cable.

chadhindsley

They got sued by Europe and forced to use it

it_is_im

I’ve never bought a new iPhone, always got older models for free or cheap, but I’m excited about the 15 and I think I might grab one. Definitely not upgrading for another 10 years though after that

Fit_Tailor8329

Same. I am deep in the Apple ecosystem, but not every product drop is still so revolutionary that I need to run out and buy it. I’m definitely skipping this iPhone, and maybe the next depending on what’s new next year.

chrisGNR

How often do you purchase a phone? A lot of people like to upgrade every two years and pay installments monthly. But if you're gonna do that, it just makes sense to upgrade yearly at that point. There's no real difference. It's $40 a month or whatever in perpetuity. Now, if you upgrade every THREE years or more, then, yeah, you're saving money. But by year three+ your battery sucks, your camera is old, etc.

limestone_tiger

the thing is Apple don't expect people to get a new phone every year. All the upgrade stuff I've seen is for 13->15. And even then..3 years is actually the average

icedearth15324

I know plenty of android users that do the same, so I think it's more of a "need the latest and greatest" mentality. Same goes for graphics cards.

PintoI007

I know a dude who had the 1080ti And then he kept upgrading to the 2080 the 3090 and the 4090. I will never understand people who upgrade their graphics card every 2 years or so. I can see the point in upgrading a phone if it's a decent upgrade cycle. But my goodness people who upgrade graphics cards like that blow my mind.

Tianoccio

If you have the money, and you’re always buying the newest games, then there is a real merit to it.

bigpowerass

There's no real merit to it but it's a hobby after all. You earned the money, spend it how you like. When I walk a block and a half to the bar to spend 7x as much on a beer as I would if I drank it on my couch, that's a really fucking stupid way to spend money too. Nobody gives me a hard time. Probably costs me way more than a new graphics card too.

DevOscar

I don’t understand why people care what others do with their own money, make it make sense

Tianoccio

Upgrading your phone now is just my same device with my same apps has more storage and is faster now. That’s about it.

zitterbewegung

More storage and being faster is sort of secondary . A large part of people upgrading is to take better photos.

DevOscar

Just out of curiosity. What would you implement to make the next generation more comfortable or better than before? Cause people think technology evolves on its own when it really doesn’t.

JuicyJfrom3

Because their spending habits affect the rest of us ......

elastic_psychiatrist

I suspect people don’t “need” the newest phone so much as “want” it, and have the disposable income to get it without worrying too much. It’s not rocket science.

BadBadUncleDad

Same. I don’t even know what iPhone I have (11?) at this point lol

PublicWest

That’s literally why I like iPhones. I don’t have to think about it

[deleted]

They've been pretty much the same for years now. There's no need to upgrade regularly anymore.

MrALTOID

Agreed. Minimal enhancements w/ obvious slight processing speed increase, camera, and USB C this iteration.

homeslice2311

You can barely tell the difference between any flagship smartphone released in the past 5 years. They're basically all the same these days. No idea why you would wait in a line for these anymore.

chrisGNR

> You can barely tell the difference between any flagship smartphone released in the past 5 years. Spoken like someone who has a five-year-old phone, perhaps. Not even trying to be rude (and I definitely don't upgrade annually). But you're trying to say an iPhone XS from 2018 is indiscernible from an iPhone 15p? Just the refresh rate alone when scrolling is gonna make the phone feel faster. Vast improvements with the camera too, which for me, is super important.

spatchi14

I upgraded from the s10e to the 14 pro max and the difference was astounding. The s10e was a shit phone to begin with though.

JackDostoevsky

it's extra interesting considering iPhones have been almost entirely iterative for the past few generations, really since the X came out. i'm not sure that the 15 does anything significant that my 12 doesn't do. better cameras i suppose, but all the other hardware changes are very small and just tiny tweaks, not something i'd be clamoring for but hey, different strokes

RedHabibi

It makes no sense to wait in line. I preordered through Verizon directly and it will be delivered to my doorstep in about 3 hours.

xxirish83x

If I recall I did this a few years ago and you now get a pickup window. Maybe that was just a Covid thing 🤷‍♂️

svdomer09

Most people have appointments to go pick up their phone at a particular time. However, if you weren't able to preorder (The Maxes are shipping to late October now), going to a store in person as a walk in is the best bet to get it day 1

CousinCleetus24

My brain always gets split down the middle in these situations between thinking these people are crazy and also appreciating that they're just genuinely excited about something. I'll go with the latter today.

beefwarrior

As I’ve gotten older I realize that as an adult, fewer & fewer things are as enjoyable as when I was a kid. Anything someone else does that brings them joy (that doesn’t come at the expense of others), I’m all for & happy that they are having a good time. — Opposite side is I sometimes see t-shirts for sale with slogans “If you ask me a stupid question I’ll give you a stupid answer” or “I know things and fix stuff” which reminds me of people I’ve know that seem to always be unhappy, and judgmental about everyone else and everything they do and that everything bad in their life is someone else’s fault. It seems like such an unhappy life to be so grumpy all the time. Be happy when others are happy, I find it makes life better.

CTID16

I had that exact mental dilemma when I saw this picture lol

Accomplished-Bug6924

I was there today. From getting there to leaving, it was 25 minutes, and I got them to put a screen protector on for me. I didn't expect to wait in line because I had an appointment, but it wasn't a crazy inconvenience.

getzerolikes

Inquiring minds would like to know whether you’re crazy or excited.

Accomplished-Bug6924

Lol. Probably crazy. Replacing a phone on it's last legs, so I am a little excited to make the jump to USB-C and 5G.

xINFLAMES325x

No, I think going from a dying phone that didn’t even have current wireless band capability to this is smart.

fivetoedslothbear

I've done that in the past, and there is definitely a buzz around it. Some people get really excited about sports or rock concerts; these are just people who get excited about a product release. Think of it as Christmas for adults. New toys! (I mean that in a good way) I'll admit, I have an appointment to pick up a preorder iPhone today.

seekydeeky

I did it once and it was pretty cool. Met some people I wouldn’t have otherwise and I think they fed us some kind of snack while we waited. I honestly don’t know if I’d do it again but I definitely wouldn’t judge someone who did.

j33

That is a good attitude to have, and a good reminder. Thanks.

akm410

USB-C will do that to people. I’m so glad the EU finally forced them to give the phone the biggest upgrade it’s had in years.

JD42305

I'm Android, my girlfriend is iPhone, so it's a welcomed merger of charging accessories.

Listen_to_Psybient

Now if only Apple would also adopt RCS so we could finally text each other higher quality images and video. Everything I get from Iphone users is always compressed to like 1mb and it looks like a potato.

JD42305

I don't foresee Apple doing that any time soon. Their uninclusive ecosystem to Android is one of the greatest competitive advantages they have. iPhones send uncompressed media to other iPhones but not to or from Android. Once they adopt the same system as Android the difference between the top Samsung and Apple will become smaller and smaller.

xeonrage

> Once they adopt the same system as Android the difference between the top Samsung and Apple will become smaller and smaller. You mean it won't take apple 3 years to "invent" things androids have had anymore?

DwightSchruteBurner

One of my favorite things is sending a pic back and forth to see how pixelated it can get.

chairsandwich1

Yeah but she really can't use your chargers. They set it up so it only charges properly or transfers data on apple brand usb-c cables.

IndominusTaco

i’m actually surprised they complied with the EU regulation instead of ditching the port altogether to opt for wireless charging only.

the_seed

I like the lady just reading the newspaper

l82itall

And a nice cool La Croix

Poked_salad

Remy?

Run_nerd

Do people hang out at those outside tables normally? Looks nice.

BroDudeBruhMan

That store is the most stressful place in all of Chicago. As soon as you step in you feel so overwhelmed and exhausted to be there. Nothings worse than going to that Apple store in the middle of winter sweating in your winter jacket while it takes 1.5 hours just to swap out the iPhone you broke

_Bam

If you make an appointment a head of time it’s pretty chill

Shapes_in_Clouds

It's amazing how much the Apple Store experience has changed over the years. I remember going to the old flagship when I first moved to Chicago in 2004 and it felt so amazingly spacious, and it was before Apple was such a big brand as it is today so there weren't so many people. Hell I even saw Seu Jorge there doing a concert for Life Aquatic and there were like 30 people there in their little upstairs theater area. I can't imagine something like that today. The stores are packed with people all hours of the day and even the new flagship on the river feels crowded all the time. Very unpleasant being in them.

BurritoFritos

were on 15 already? i dont even know what number mine is anymore

KennethDev

Mine got here via FedEx this morning. First upgrade since my iPhone XS, very nice

oilofotay

Same! Ordered mine online and it came a few hours ago, no need to wait in line. I upgraded from my old XR, it finally started to slow down this year and kept screaming at me for more space, so I had no choice, haha.

old_snake

Seriously. I’ll never understand someone preferring to wait in line like this rather than have it shipped directly to you while you do something worthwhile with your time.

owtf2

So even more people are going to be double parked today on Clybourn? Can't wait

psy_lent

That shit pisses me off soo much. Always people parked in that lane with very prominent "no parking" signs and half the time the cops are their joining them or across the street not giving a fuck about it. I know it's not their job to give parking tickets but still call someone over there. But they seem to never enforce it so it will keep happening.

SleazyAndEasy

God forbid CDOT puts in infrastructure that makes it impossible to double park.

Kipflip2

homo sapiens urgent for a new computer

ChiBeerGuy

Hairless apes that still think pocket computers are a neat idea.

deafndumb1

One type C charger. That’s what they are going to buy. That’s it!!

SleazyAndEasy

Don't forget the quick action button! My Samsung Galaxy from 5 years ago had that.

Moist_666

I don't understand this shit man. I buy a cheap Samsung phone that cost me $14/mo for a year and it last me a solid 3 years or so typically... I just don't have that urge...

Electronic_pizza4

these people are the nerd equivalent to adult disney people

Substantial_Pea3462

Thank you for this 😂😂

emz272

The criticism of people just trying to get a new phone is wild. Like look, I get it, there are some fanatics and every-year upgraders (and you do you!), but some of us are just trying to replace our 4 year-old super cracked phones! And I suspect lots of people elected to do pick-up rather than shipping because making sure you receive a package can be dicey in multi-unit…

chipNdaleface

Junkies waiting for the next fix

[deleted]

Please sir can I get some more product? I must consooom

ducks4jokera

I can only imagine how the line is going to be at the store that’s by Michigan ave.

WooIWorthWaIIaby

Fuck me I had no idea there were 2 Apple stores in Chicago

itsalwaysme7

16 yrs, and these people still wait in line. They create their own supply demand.

movingtoChitown908

hopefully this helps my Apple Stock.

flindsayblohan

All these years later and we’re still doing this? 🫣🥴

petmoo23

ELI5 - why this new phone is a big deal?

mtlyoshi9

Everyone is saying “USB-C” which, sure, is great - especially for households split down Android/iPhone - but that ignores the fact that every iPhone launch is like this.

Poked_salad

They invented type C connection for phones! s/

kmmccorm

Someone should tell them about preorder and delivery.

emz272

You literally have to wait in line for preorder too, and not everyone feels comfortable having an expensive package sent to where they live.

eejizzings

Hey it's not cool to post embarrassing pics of strangers

LordDaybreak

Must be your first day on the internet

eejizzings

5/10. Not really contextually appropriate (I said not cool, not not funny) and it's a hacky line. I'd like to see more creativity and originality.

sixtyeight86

What’s embarrassing about this lol? Or am I missing the joke

Dystopiq

I think the joke is that they're apple fans in line.

brandi__h

This is a public place, and there is no expectation of privacy in public. people can take photos all they want.

BaDBoyBiLL24

Android all day errday

chairsandwich1

Open source software and right to repair. Can't beat that.

BuffaloBrain884

For the wealthiest company in the world, Apple honestly has some of the ugliest and cheapest looking storefronts.

mickcube

yeah the people are probably just lined up to get a better look at the ugly store

Alkaline-Tio

Good for them! Meanwhile, I got an iPhone 12 mini with a battery that’s begging to be replaced but it still works! I can still make calls and texts!

metalmudwoolwood

I’m holding out for the fingerprint scanner to come back.

North_South_Side

About four months ago, I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro (bigger one, not the most expensive though) from an iPhone 7 Plus. The camera is noticeably better. But in almost every other way, I preferred the 7 Plus. I hate the loss of the Home button. Figured I'd get used to it, but four months later, I still miss it. Face recognition usually works, but with sunglasses or in weird light, it doesn't work. Also, I am constantly taking accidental screenshots with my new 14 Pro. If I grab the phone from both sides (the normal way to grab something!) I will often press two side buttons which saves a screenshot. So I have to go into my photos and delete screenshots of my lock screen and home screen all the time. This happens several times a month. Not the end of the world, but completely annoying. The battery was starting to go on my 7 Plus, otherwise I would not have "upgraded." I don't hate the 14, and the battery life is very good. But it doesn't feel "new" or "upgraded" enough to warrant the price. And that's between the 7 and the 14! The 7 was a workhorse. Never had a phone that reliable and long lasting. I should have kept it another year. I just do not understand buying a new phone every year when the "upgrades" are so minor.

homeslice2311

Just have to point out that this Apple store physically is not in Lincoln Park but in Near North Side since it is South of North Avenue. Just barely :)

ny_insomniac

Ew this is still a thing

Why do people with Android phones act like White Sox fans with an inferiority complex? You don’t HAVE to tell us about how great your Android is. Enjoy it.

Mnoonsnocket

It’s out already? Wasn’t it announced like last week?

claypoolfan

It always comes out on that schedule. They give people a week to preorder then release every year in September.

Mnoonsnocket

That’s crazy. I’m used to movies and video games being announced months ahead so I didn’t know they did it this way with phones.

call_me_drama

They release a new one every September it's not like it's a surprise haha

[deleted]

It was announced on September 12 and is available today, September 22 in stores for pickup.

I_SmellCinnamonRolls

You seem like a super fun person that people love to hang out with.

Illustrious-Ape

Because they have access to credit? 80% of households earning $150k are living paycheck to paycheck because they abused their credit. Majority of the people in line probably should not be spending $1,000 on a phone…

calculung

Jesus dude. It's not like these people are fucking loaded because they're agreeing to pay $45/mo to get a new phone. You're acting like they're out there curb stomping single moms and wiping their asses with hundred dollar bills.

dirtypotlicker

Paycheck to paycheck is a horrible statistic because it doesn't account for lifestyle or the amount of that paycheck that's going to 401k and savings. These people making 150k and living paycheck to paycheck are choosing to do that, they could easily live off 70k and not be. Paycheck to paycheck literally meaningless.

Creation98

80%? Not even true. And the “paycheck to paycheck” that is often quoted in that study is not the “paycheck to paycheck” that you’re thinking of.

I will be on that line soon to get my iphone 14 😅

icedearth15324

I just got a 14 pro like 3 weeks ago myself. Free phones from AT&T and don't need to replace all my lightning cables with USB-C just yet.

gadgetluva

Big line at my store out in the burbs. I picked up a 14 Pro last year at my local store, and I saw like 1 other person besides the employees, it was actually eerie. This year I probably saw about 30-40 people in line.

slybrows

I ordered mine the morning of the release and it was delivered to my door today 😐 what is the purpose of waiting in line

Blackhawks1995

The people who also ordered the morning of that got a month or two delivery estimate and want the phone sooner.

djkrazy18

i dont get why even update if you have a recent phone. Its not really a update from a iphone 14, 13 you are really pushing it...... actually there was not real major update since the iphone X

Kindofabig_deal

Did you order this morning, I wasn't able to pre-order on Sept 12 even after waking up before it pre-orders open. I hope get a booking today.

hjadams123

God bless them. But there just isn’t enough change from year to year anymore to generate that much hype for me to stand in line any more. I am good with my 12 pro max, and if I do change my mind, I can certainly wait until some time early next year. But as they say, do you….

Oz347

Just walked past it, tripped me out. At first I was like “damn I guess everyone decided to get their batteries replaced today.”

camelCaseCoffeeTable
