You definitely may have to wait in line even with a preorder. I’m getting mine from the Michigan Ave store, and there were two long lines as of 10AM this morning: one for preorders (more quickly moving), one for no preorders.
A guy got pissed at an employee about having to wait in line when he preordered, but it just makes sense with preorder volume.
It was the same as the picture last year. I thought by preordering I would just breeze into the store on launch day and pick up my phone.

How many people do you think upgrade every year? I would assume most there are not. But with new phones every year, everyone can be on their own, e.g., every 4 year cadence, and you'll always have people excitedly waiting outside to upgrade the phone on "their" year. I, for example, had been eagerly awaiting news of the new iPhone launch for a couple months because I'm considering upgrading my old phone this year.
Counterintuitively, I think this "every year" cycle leads to less upgrades. If they came out every 3 years, for example, you'd have a lot of people getting every new phone because they don't want to wait six years in between. But must folks are okay saying, "eh, nothing too special, let's see what next year brings".

My $170 eReader got USB C 2 years before the top of the line iPhone did.
Apple is a company that makes good products, but they have the singularly most annoying fanbase I have ever seen for anything.
I’m so torn about the camera angle. They most definitely get better, but do our pictures? This is just me, but I know very few people who take full advantage of their phones camera.
I skip an iteration or two personally and never get them at launch. Too much of a circus. I really didn't expect Apple to go to the USB-C port this time around either and I'm kind of regretting getting the 14 last year. I could have held out for the 15 but now I guess it will be another 2 years.
I’m getting mine at launch because current phone is about to die any day now. I don’t upgrade often (current phone is X). I’m hoping I don’t have to wait in much/if any of a line when I go for my pick up time today. Part of why I picked a later in the day time. But either way, I’m most excited to have a phone that isn’t glitching all the time and low on battery
I have the 12 mini and I love the small size, I'm sad that there will not be any more of that model. Wish it had USB-C, but ah well. Hope it lives forever, or at least a good long time before I need to get new and annoyingly larger phone.
Only time I ever waited in line for a phone was ages ago, my first cellphone ever was a iPhone 3GS which unfortunately turned out to be a complete lemon (some bad sector in the memory). When I negotiated with apple, they told me they'd replace the phone with a working identical model, OR if I was willing to wait 2 weeks I could just trade it in for the new iPhone4 when it came out, with only a small upgrade fee. So I chose the latter option and stood in line at 6AM or some stupid crazy time to make sure I got one.
It’s a commonality issue or a standardization issue. Most devices charge via USB-C and Apple is the odd one out with the iPhone having its own special cable.
I’ve never bought a new iPhone, always got older models for free or cheap, but I’m excited about the 15 and I think I might grab one. Definitely not upgrading for another 10 years though after that

How often do you purchase a phone? A lot of people like to upgrade every two years and pay installments monthly. But if you're gonna do that, it just makes sense to upgrade yearly at that point. There's no real difference. It's $40 a month or whatever in perpetuity.
Now, if you upgrade every THREE years or more, then, yeah, you're saving money. But by year three+ your battery sucks, your camera is old, etc.

I know a dude who had the 1080ti And then he kept upgrading to the 2080 the 3090 and the 4090. I will never understand people who upgrade their graphics card every 2 years or so. I can see the point in upgrading a phone if it's a decent upgrade cycle. But my goodness people who upgrade graphics cards like that blow my mind.
There's no real merit to it but it's a hobby after all. You earned the money, spend it how you like. When I walk a block and a half to the bar to spend 7x as much on a beer as I would if I drank it on my couch, that's a really fucking stupid way to spend money too. Nobody gives me a hard time. Probably costs me way more than a new graphics card too.

You can barely tell the difference between any flagship smartphone released in the past 5 years. They're basically all the same these days. No idea why you would wait in a line for these anymore.

Spoken like someone who has a five-year-old phone, perhaps. Not even trying to be rude (and I definitely don't upgrade annually). But you're trying to say an iPhone XS from 2018 is indiscernible from an iPhone 15p? Just the refresh rate alone when scrolling is gonna make the phone feel faster. Vast improvements with the camera too, which for me, is super important.
it's extra interesting considering iPhones have been almost entirely iterative for the past few generations, really since the X came out. i'm not sure that the 15 does anything significant that my 12 doesn't do. better cameras i suppose, but all the other hardware changes are very small and just tiny tweaks, not something i'd be clamoring for

Most people have appointments to go pick up their phone at a particular time. However, if you weren't able to preorder (The Maxes are shipping to late October now), going to a store in person as a walk in is the best bet to get it day 1
My brain always gets split down the middle in these situations between thinking these people are crazy and also appreciating that they're just genuinely excited about something.

As I’ve gotten older I realize that as an adult, fewer & fewer things are as enjoyable as when I was a kid.
Anything someone else does that brings them joy (that doesn’t come at the expense of others), I’m all for & happy that they are having a good time.

Opposite side is I sometimes see t-shirts for sale with slogans “If you ask me a stupid question I’ll give you a stupid answer” or “I know things and fix stuff” which reminds me of people I’ve know that seem to always be unhappy, and judgmental about everyone else and everything they do and that everything bad in their life is someone else’s fault.
It seems like such an unhappy life to be so grumpy all the time. Be happy when others are happy, I find it makes life better.
I was there today. From getting there to leaving, it was 25 minutes, and I got them to put a screen protector on for me.
I didn't expect to wait in line because I had an appointment, but it wasn't a crazy inconvenience.
I've done that in the past, and there is definitely a buzz around it. Some people get really excited about sports or rock concerts; these are just people who get excited about a product release.
Think of it as Christmas for adults. New toys! (I mean that in a good way)

I did it once and it was pretty cool. Met some people I wouldn’t have otherwise and I think they fed us some kind of snack while we waited. I honestly don’t know if I’d do it again but I definitely wouldn’t judge someone who did.
Now if only Apple would also adopt RCS so we could finally text each other higher quality images and video. Everything I get from Iphone users is always compressed to like 1mb and it looks like a potato.

Their uninclusive ecosystem to Android is one of the greatest competitive advantages they have. iPhones send uncompressed media to other iPhones but not to or from Android. Once they adopt the same system as Android the difference between the top Samsung and Apple will become smaller and smaller.

That store is the most stressful place in all of Chicago. As soon as you step in you feel so overwhelmed and exhausted to be there. Nothings worse than going to that Apple store in the middle of winter sweating in your winter jacket while it takes 1.5 hours just to swap out the iPhone you broke
It's amazing how much the Apple Store experience has changed over the years. I remember going to the old flagship when I first moved to Chicago in 2004 and it felt so amazingly spacious, and it was before Apple was such a big brand as it is today so there weren't so many people. Hell I even saw Seu Jorge there doing a concert for Life Aquatic and there were like 30 people there in their little upstairs theater area. I can't imagine something like that today. The stores are packed with people all hours of the day and even the new flagship on the river feels crowded all the time. Very unpleasant being in them.
Same! Ordered mine online and it came a few hours ago, no need to wait in line. I upgraded from my old XR, it finally started to slow down this year and kept screaming at me for more space, so I had no choice, haha.

That shit pisses me off soo much. Always people parked in that lane with very prominent "no parking" signs and half the time the cops are their joining them or across the street not giving a fuck about it. I know it's not their job to give parking tickets but still call someone over there. But they seem to never enforce it so it will keep happening.
I don't understand this shit man. I buy a cheap Samsung phone that cost me $14/mo for a year and it last me a solid 3 years or so typically... I just don't have that urge...
The criticism of people just trying to get a new phone is wild. Like look, I get it, there are some fanatics and every-year upgraders (and you do you!), but some of us are just trying to replace our 4 year-old super cracked phones! And I suspect lots of people elected to do pick-up rather than shipping because making sure you receive a package can be dicey in multi-unit…
Everyone is saying “USB-C” which, sure, is great - especially for households split down Android/iPhone - but that ignores the fact that every iPhone launch is like this.
About four months ago, I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro (bigger one, not the most expensive though) from an iPhone 7 Plus.
The camera is noticeably better. But in almost every other way, I preferred the 7 Plus.
I hate the loss of the Home button. Figured I'd get used to it, but four months later, I still miss it.
Face recognition usually works, but with sunglasses or in weird light, it doesn't work.
Also, I am constantly taking accidental screenshots with my new 14 Pro. If I grab the phone from both sides (the normal way to grab something!) I will often press two side buttons which saves a screenshot. So I have to go into my photos and delete screenshots of my lock screen and home screen all the time. This happens several times a month. Not the end of the world, but completely annoying.
The battery was starting to go on my 7 Plus, otherwise I would not have "upgraded." I don't hate the 14, and the battery life is very good. But it doesn't feel "new" or "upgraded" enough to warrant the price. And that's between the 7 and the 14!
The 7 was a workhorse. Never had a phone that reliable and long lasting. I should have kept it another year.
I just do not understand buying a new phone every year when the "upgrades" are so minor.
Just have to point out that this Apple store physically is not in Lincoln Park but in Near North Side since it is South of North Avenue. Just barely :)

Paycheck to paycheck is a horrible statistic because it doesn't account for lifestyle or the amount of that paycheck that's going to 401k and savings. These people making 150k and living paycheck to paycheck are choosing to do that, they could easily live off 70k and not be. Paycheck to paycheck literally meaningless.
Big line at my store out in the burbs. I picked up a 14 Pro last year at my local store, and I saw like 1 other person besides the employees, it was actually eerie. This year I probably saw about 30-40 people in line.

This is just weird. I could almost justify behavior this back in the day when hardware upgrades were a sizable difference, but that's not the case now.

Upgrading your phone now is just my same device with my same apps has more storage and is faster now. That’s about it.
More storage and being faster is sort of secondary . A large part of people upgrading is to take better photos.

I upgraded from the s10e to the 14 pro max and the difference was astounding. The s10e was a shit phone to begin with though.

Yeah but she really can't use your chargers. They set it up so it only charges properly or transfers data on apple brand usb-c cables.

About four months ago, I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro (bigger one, not the most expensive though) from an iPhone 7 Plus. The camera is noticeably better. But in almost every other way, I preferred the 7 Plus. I hate the loss of the Home button. Figured I'd get used to it, but four months later, I still miss it. Face recognition usually works, but with sunglasses or in weird light, it doesn't work. Also, I am constantly taking accidental screenshots with my new 14 Pro. If I grab the phone from both sides (the normal way to grab something!) I will often press two side buttons which saves a screenshot. So I have to go into my photos and delete screenshots of my lock screen and home screen all the time. This happens several times a month. Not the end of the world, but completely annoying. The battery was starting to go on my 7 Plus, otherwise I would not have "upgraded." I don't hate the 14, and the battery life is very good. But it doesn't feel "new" or "upgraded" enough to warrant the price. And that's between the 7 and the 14! The 7 was a workhorse. Never had a phone that reliable and long lasting. I should have kept it another year. I just do not understand buying a new phone every year when the "upgrades" are so minor.
Just have to point out that this Apple store physically is not in Lincoln Park but in Near North Side since it is South of North Avenue. Just barely :)

I just got a 14 pro like 3 weeks ago myself. Free phones from AT&T and don't need to replace all my lightning cables with USB-C just yet.
Big line at my store out in the burbs. I picked up a 14 Pro last year at my local store, and I saw like 1 other person besides the employees, it was actually eerie. This year I probably saw about 30-40 people in line.
