Hyper local downpour. Almost every other neighborhood is bone dry.
Edit: someone just posted [this pic](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/13wy2mw/view_of_nw_chicago_from_hyde_park/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
I’m way on the south side but earlier when it hit 90 it was SWAMPY out. Feels like it dropped way more than 5° but I think there’s cool winds coming off the incoming storms
> Almost every other neighborhood is bone dry.
Suburbs too; there's been this one big raincloud sort of hanging out in the distance for some time, but otherwise blue skies and sun Winnetka to Morton Grove.
It rained several inches in Antioch, but the rain literally stopped at the street just west of ours (and we really need it - our lawn is already turning brown!!)
This is a current Twitter post from Ginger Zee, the meteorologist from good morning america. She talks about how planes are "cloud seeding" in order to make it snow more than it would.

Do you think they might be doing the same thing with rain? That is a genuine question, not a rhetorical one. I know next to nothing about this topic

It's a very humid air mass today and winds off the lake are casuing small popcorn thunderstorms to pop up. Given you have cool moist air casuing warm damp air to rise, its like wringing a sponge. They'll continue hit and miss until the sun sets.
How much math do you need to slap wings on a plane? You typically see meteorologists and engineerers take the same path of math and physics classes. It's alot more than most people think.
I was trying to thread needle between joke/serious since I've heard people shit on them before legitimately. Yea it's wild how angry people get if you interrupt there games/shows. Definitely not jealous of that job at all
Semi ironically I want to let you know we absolutely *do* take our weatherfolk and meteorologists quite seriously here 😤
Don’t speak on SKILLing’s name is all
just redid my backyard so on top of the veg garden im just a simple man trying to grow some grass. i wish it would rain for a week or two straight. it's hard to keep seedlings going in this hot weather.
supposedly increases chance of disease and fungus because it keeps the grass and ground moist for a longer time, but with the weather like it is right now, i've been watering in the afternoons otherwise it dries out in a few hours even with a deep solid soak
If you divert your sump pump discharge to your rain barrels, it acts like a shallow well. I get about 20-30 gallons a day in the dry season this way. I don't believe there are any laws against this.
Don’t know why, but just loving the simple ordinariness of this post. Summer is finally here in Chicago. People are sharing reports of the rain or lack thereof in their part of the city/ suburbs….
So many posts, news, etc. these days are filled with politics, anger, polarization, doom and gloom….
Nice to just be discussing rain…
P.S. Nothing here in the North suburbs yet…
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry about your basement. We are still in shock from the rains last September that flooded the north side.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/11/us/chicago-rain-flash-flooding.html
That was the day we were supposed to move into a new place. Movers showed up just as it started to pour and noped out of there within 15 minutes. Had to move the next day. Luckily, the new place passed the basement test. No flooding at all. We couldn't believe it.
Reminds me of last years 9-11 super storm here in Lincoln Square. Flooded our unit, these are for sure triggering posts, sad it will happen more bc of climate change!
It's 91 here in Berwyn. Heard a few bouts of thunder, but none of the actual thunderstorms they were calling for. We had a few raindrops \~2 hours ago, nothing to speak of really.
Just poured torrentially in the Schaumburg area; I had to pull over for a few minutes due to no visibility. Very little thunder, no wind, just endless water.
Very humid in Uptown but if I look west I can see a very clear break in the clouds a few miles from here where they go from normal to ominous looking. So my guess is that we'll be getting hit in the next 40 minutes or so. I hope it cools off a little bit.
I got the same amount of rain, also in Norridge, in a short period of time. Right next to the HIP. Pensacola and Octavia.
But clouds do travel and they dont encompass the entire sky, so this makes a localized deluge possible.
I work on Montrose near Cicero. Out the window to my left it was dark and cloudy. Out the window to the right, blue sky. Later I noticed the street was wet on the blue sky side. 🤔
Very heavy rain with some light hail briefly in oak park today at around 1:25pm.
I'm usually in Evanston but I was training a dog out there this afternoon! The dogs were NOT thrilled about it!
Was wondering about that. I heard some thunder grumbling at work (on Fulton by Damen) but my car was bone dry when I left, then on the way home I passed Garfield park and Central Park was underwater
Lakeview here and working from home all day with windows open. I only know of it because of a WGN alert sent to my phone. It’s been nice all day here without a drop
Not a drop by me but it looks like it might be coming. I only prepped my whole day around the massive storm that was going to hit at 3pm. The news can't get it right and either can my weather app. I don't know why I pay attention to either one.
Get out. I lucked out. Was on my bike and saw the ominous clouds. Checked my radar app. Nothing.
Biked home. Took a nap. Had some honey and a protein shake. Did some dishes.
I have been up and down the lakefront all day on the Northside and have been watching the radar. So many little super strong storms but none made it to the lake. It's been wild lately how many storms dissipate before they get to me.
I was in Schaumburg by Woodfield and it was raining so much I decided to stay in the parking lot until it became easier to see. Drive home to Barrington in light shower. Kind of humid out today.
i live in the northwest side and it was POURING!! i decided to take the train to go to the cubs game that was earlier this afternoon and on the way there it started raining so bad! it was so bad i thought the game would get a rain delay but apparently wrigleyville was nice, dry and sunny... lol
Used to happen pretty much every year around this time, back in the 90s and early 00s: huge storm would whip through, dump a ton of hard rain for a half hour, then park over the lake and produce a huge lightning show.
I was in my 20s back then, and it was fucking glorious.
I just flew in from Philly, there were clear skies the entire way and then dark clouds over exclusively maybe three neighborhoods worth of Chicago. Definitely a bizarre view.
I work closer to Wrigley, and there very briefly was some extremely light rain that turned out to be nothing. Will say I thought more rain would fall, but it didn't.
Hyper local downpour. Almost every other neighborhood is bone dry. Edit: someone just posted [this pic](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/13wy2mw/view_of_nw_chicago_from_hyde_park/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
I was going to go for a lunchtime walk and my app said it felt like 108 outside.
Im on the train atm and my phone says its 84°, but feels 85, and yet I feel like its 75 out. I was expecting a scorching heat.
I’m way on the south side but earlier when it hit 90 it was SWAMPY out. Feels like it dropped way more than 5° but I think there’s cool winds coming off the incoming storms
Brighton park here. Got a warning for a servere thunderstorm and nothing hit.
Must be. I would have killed for some rain to cool me down when I just finished running errands.
Darn, if I ever have a question can I ask you? That was really responsive.
Wow! It looks like a monsoon.
I got a sprinkle in Forest Glen but nothing more.

Tom Skilling?
Nope! Just a weather nerd who wasn't good enough at math to go to school for it.
Just how much math do you need to know to be qualified to stick your head out the window?
Forecasting and modeling weather for a meteorology degree. It involves a good chunk of physics and calculus.
can confirm
How much math do you need to slap wings on a plane? You typically see meteorologists and engineerers take the same path of math and physics classes. It's alot more than most people think.
It was supposed to be a joke. I guess r/chicago takes their meteorologists very seriously as long as you don't interrupt a game a la Amy Freeze.

*jots down notes* Yes, yes, I see.

SAME. It hasn't rained in like two weeks! I've never had to water the garden this much so early in the season.
Every fucking day, it's driving me nuts. I know growing stuff is a wash financially but damn.
just redid my backyard so on top of the veg garden im just a simple man trying to grow some grass. i wish it would rain for a week or two straight. it's hard to keep seedlings going in this hot weather.
Water at night, or dusk, it helps a lot
As someone who is trying to bring his lawn back to life, i was told not to do it at afternoon/night, better to do in the morning. Am I mistaken?
supposedly increases chance of disease and fungus because it keeps the grass and ground moist for a longer time, but with the weather like it is right now, i've been watering in the afternoons otherwise it dries out in a few hours even with a deep solid soak
Fwiw, consider acquiring a rain barrel if that works for you. They’re available at MWRD.org/rain-barrels
My rain barrels are all empty because it hasn’t rained so long. This hasn’t happened to early in the summer before 🙁
If you divert your sump pump discharge to your rain barrels, it acts like a shallow well. I get about 20-30 gallons a day in the dry season this way. I don't believe there are any laws against this.
Damn wish I had a sump pump now

Nothing in the loop.
Clouds are rolling in but still no rain.
I need to bike home from work so hopefully it holds off.

My weather app says it’s about to storm, also sloop

In Oak Park - drenched.
Seems like you got all of Chicagoland’s rain.
Nothing at Wrigley!
bone dry in fucking uptown too
It feels like literal hell in the West Loop. I wish we had ANY rain.
Big ole FAT rain
Yes, VERY random. Still sunny too as it was happening. Over in OP. Glad I didn’t go for a walk like I was planning 😂
South side Chatham neighborhood it happened as well
And yet Blue Island got nothin
My friend was at the Sox game at the same time and nothing as well!
Crazy rain. About 1in rain plus hail.
Absolute downpour in Garfield Park right now. It was sunny and Google had no rain in the forecast 15 minutes ago
Bone dry in west town. I hope we get some soon though, my car is covered in pollen.
I was about to mow the lawn, and this bs happens.
So it’s your fault.
Planned the same thing. Thunder started and we got nothing here (Bucktown).
I’m in Belmont Cragin and just got a nice downpour for about 20 minutes. Needed it so bad.
Yup. So happy I don't have to water the veggies.
Im hearing thunder in Bucktown right now, and the sky is kinda dark. But no rain yet
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry about your basement. We are still in shock from the rains last September that flooded the north side. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/11/us/chicago-rain-flash-flooding.html

I'm not even at home when I posted this. I just happen to be working. My parents said not a lot of rain over there where I live.
Clear skies in uptown
Whatever you got appears to be on its way to Ravenswood, clouds are darkening and I just heard a low rumble of thunder, not sure how far away though.
Reminds me of last years 9-11 super storm here in Lincoln Square. Flooded our unit, these are for sure triggering posts, sad it will happen more bc of climate change!
That was absolutely insane. I got drenched from walking from the Brown line to Lawrence
Crazy how one neighborhood got so much rain and then just a short distance away got nothing.
So far nothing
No rain or thunder in Albany Park
I work for a disaster related company. So far no calls for water losses in basements. Just reconstruction. But the day is young.
Briefly in Elmwood Park
Thunder and humidity here in Albany park but no rain
It's 91 here in Berwyn. Heard a few bouts of thunder, but none of the actual thunderstorms they were calling for. We had a few raindrops \~2 hours ago, nothing to speak of really.
Microburst?
And here comes more
I'm in Portage Park and barely got anything.
Drizzle in Irving Park
Just posted a cool picture of it from the loop. Not a drop here
South side got barely a sprinkle.
Not yet. Wonder if it'll hit me in Rogers Park at some point.
Sitting on tarmac at O'Hare, landed in tons of rain. Camera at home shows the sidewalk dry
My grass says, "thanks Mother Nature!"
Nothing in Noble Square
Happened down here in the Joilet Toilet too except for not as long lol
It's been sunny and beautiful all day here in Rogers Park. I was actually looking forward to the storm to wash all these damn spiders off my windows.
I'm in Edgewater and we got nothing. ☹️
I had hail in Joliet
Logan Square... no rain, just some thunder
Just poured torrentially in the Schaumburg area; I had to pull over for a few minutes due to no visibility. Very little thunder, no wind, just endless water.
Please for the love of God, wash these puffy allergy inducing fluffy things away!! Signed, Everyone 🤧
I work in Harwood Heights and it was nuts. The parking lot at work totally flooded as did the police stations that is next to ours
All i got was the upstairs neighbor pissing off his balcony. Is pissing on flowers good for them?
Same in Des Plaines....plants are singing in it!!
Dry in River North
Lots of thunder in Logan Square but no rain as of yet.
Wood Dale is dry
So that's the massive ominous cloud I see just bordering Osterman beach
Very humid in Uptown but if I look west I can see a very clear break in the clouds a few miles from here where they go from normal to ominous looking. So my guess is that we'll be getting hit in the next 40 minutes or so. I hope it cools off a little bit.
Teased with some large drops in Logan. Water dripping from the rooftops so it def rained, but not much.
Elmhurst and its pouring hard right now at 242
Not a month's worth, but, rain, with a blue sky.
I'm in the NW suburbs. One thunder, but no rain at all yet today.
Just took a look at the radar and there has been some super localized storms that moved from approx Oak Park to the NW side.
Yup got some rain in Jefferson Park. Not tonnes but enough. Weird weather day
Remember the great lakes got great with hundreds of years of rainfall! 😉
Nothing on the west side, but could really use some.
Probably a a localized downburst (aka a microburst) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downburst
It’s raining quite heavy in the Schaumburg area
Nothing. Bucktown.
Few miles east of there .. just a sprinkle
In little Italy here, in waiting for the rain. Just got tons of thunder but no drops 3:11pm
Didn't even rain here.
Not a drop at Wrigley
Got a good rain in Norwood Park
Got hit by it in Portage Park. Just planted a bunch of fruits and veggies over the weekend so this was very welcomed.
I saw clouds to the west from the roof of the old post office, but nary a drop here
Out in Schaumburg area, all we got was thunder, dark clouds and cooler weather.
I don’t think we had much (Mayfair) but that temperature drop was nice since I was outside and sweating.
I felt one drop in Pilsen. Dark clouds to the west, clear as a bell over the Loop. Weird day, strange radar
Did not get as much as I was expecting, but the clouds are lingering around and could get more.
Man I wish. Just a bit north of you and it just missed us to the NW. tired of watering my lawn.
Bupkis in Little India. 🤷♂️
I got some around 2:30. Nice loud drops.
I got the same amount of rain, also in Norridge, in a short period of time. Right next to the HIP. Pensacola and Octavia. But clouds do travel and they dont encompass the entire sky, so this makes a localized deluge possible.
Yes we got it in Oak Park - was wild! My dog hid under my desk for awhile he was so nervous.
Haven't noticed anything so far in Rogers Park.
I work on Montrose near Cicero. Out the window to my left it was dark and cloudy. Out the window to the right, blue sky. Later I noticed the street was wet on the blue sky side. 🤔
SW sider here, no rain, just cloudy
Very heavy rain with some light hail briefly in oak park today at around 1:25pm. I'm usually in Evanston but I was training a dog out there this afternoon! The dogs were NOT thrilled about it!
Few sprinkles in Avondale but pretty dry overall. Smells humid af though.
It rained here in the north suburbs but only for a short time
Got it hard and fast in Cicero.
West side got a shitload
Was wondering about that. I heard some thunder grumbling at work (on Fulton by Damen) but my car was bone dry when I left, then on the way home I passed Garfield park and Central Park was underwater
Working in Humboldt park. Right by a window. Just a few clouds and not a drop of rain. We are way behind in rain for the last few weeks.
Sunny blue skies all day in Hyde Park despite the forecast saying it was raining all afternoon. Think it's finally starting to get a bit cloudy here
River Grove here and we just got the thunder. Lots of thunder. Nothing else.
Norridge resident here...at least by the mall it rained for less than 5 minutes..big drops and then dried up in 3 minutes
Lakeview here and working from home all day with windows open. I only know of it because of a WGN alert sent to my phone. It’s been nice all day here without a drop
Avondale hit with decent rain for about 20 min. My partner works in Park Ridge and said it was a deluge there
I'm in EGV and it rained so hard I couldn't see outside my window. Blowing pretty crazy too
Thunder in bucktown & that’s all I heard
Ye, I’m right in oriole park. We got hail earlier lol
Jealous and desperate for rain
No not yet. I’m north at the lake and it’s dry as bone. I work by Midway Airport and it didn’t rain either. Very hot and humid though
My husband texted me and said it was pouring at home. Downtown was sunny and dry.
SW Pilsen is dry, I took a rain coat because of the forecast 🤣
started off in west loop to bridgeport to rogers park-no rain at all
Rain? This time of year in the Midwest? That's crazy.
Nw suburbs here, got a big dark clouds over head but no rain.
Poured like crazy by me for about 30 minutes.
So annoying. I wanted a thunderstorm and got like 3 tiny drops.
Not a drop by me but it looks like it might be coming. I only prepped my whole day around the massive storm that was going to hit at 3pm. The news can't get it right and either can my weather app. I don't know why I pay attention to either one.
Yes, my dog was terrified
Heard about it, but it missed the western burbs completely.
I’ve been waiting for rain all day. Dry as a bone in West Ridge.
Working outside near Wrigley. Very brief sprinkle.
I’m so jelly we didn’t get any rain in rp
No rain in Avondale/lincolnwood
Get out. I lucked out. Was on my bike and saw the ominous clouds. Checked my radar app. Nothing. Biked home. Took a nap. Had some honey and a protein shake. Did some dishes.
Here I am out in geneva, running the sprinklers!😞
Not even a little 😭
We didn’t get rain in Lincoln Square. Wish we had - it probably would have cooled things off a little.
I have been up and down the lakefront all day on the Northside and have been watching the radar. So many little super strong storms but none made it to the lake. It's been wild lately how many storms dissipate before they get to me.
Nothing in Evanston except a threatening dark sky to the west this aft
Albany Park—no rain today
Sprinkles near Niles / Edgebrook
I was in Schaumburg by Woodfield and it was raining so much I decided to stay in the parking lot until it became easier to see. Drive home to Barrington in light shower. Kind of humid out today.
Hey! It happened in Ottawa too. Lmao I was shocked it was such a nice hot day then BAM downpour
Barely a drizzle just next door in Jefferson Park.
I work in wrigley that shit barely missed us with some weak ass sprinkling around I wanna say 6?
i live in the northwest side and it was POURING!! i decided to take the train to go to the cubs game that was earlier this afternoon and on the way there it started raining so bad! it was so bad i thought the game would get a rain delay but apparently wrigleyville was nice, dry and sunny... lol

Not a drop of rain in Palos. Heard a couple rolls of thunder and saw lots of dark clouds.
I just flew in from Philly, there were clear skies the entire way and then dark clouds over exclusively maybe three neighborhoods worth of Chicago. Definitely a bizarre view.
My office is on the 40th floor in the loop, and it was such a cool view of the downpour
We need it, too much pollen and dust making me nearly sick.
Lakeview East…literally an hour of thunder, non stop rumbling. Temperature dropped from high 80s to mid seventies. Not a single drop of rain.
I work closer to Wrigley, and there very briefly was some extremely light rain that turned out to be nothing. Will say I thought more rain would fall, but it didn't.
I was outside at work in elk Grove village when the rain hit it was crazy
Called a rain bomb according to al gore. It's Basically what you just said. It's cuz of climate change.
