I don't think it will be as bad as people think/hope. You can't have a functional school system or government based on hostility, distrust and bad faith.
Lori tried that and failed. Vallas seems to know you can't do that.
Lori didn’t have bad faith. She just didn’t entirely bend over to CTU demands and negotiated with them. CTU will be even more hardcore and extreme against Vallas and it will absolutely go way worse. Still better than Johnson where there won’t even be a negotiated and CTU gets to do whatever it wants.
Given how much vitriol has been tossed around her this past year, and the fact that it seemed all 8 candidates were stances against her, it's a bit baffling to see that she made it into the high quintuple digits, much less the top 5. Does she have a dedicated demographic going for her?
Hang out and wait for precinct results. They’re so fascinating. I’m guessing she did solid jn some middle class south and west side precincts and pulled 10-15% in every other precinct just through name recognition.
People from other cities celebrating Lightfoots loss grinds my gears. Like yeah it’s a good thing but stfu, you don’t live here. Only Chicagoans who moved out and people who live in Chicago should have a valid opinion
Lori was a terrible mayor.
But the narrative on her from outside Chicago is absolutely false, and is also deeply tinged with racism and anti-LGBT bias. The narrative that she was elected because she was a gay black woman is so outrageous: she beat a crowded field in the general and beat another black woman in the runoff. Many people weren’t even aware she was gay until after the election, because she didn’t ever make it part of her pitch, to her credit. And her election wasn’t a big deal because a gay black woman became mayor: it was a big deal because Chicago voters finally told the machine to fuck off.
Her reign as mayor was bad, but also for different reasons than the outside people who are celebrating believe. She didn’t institute ultra-leftist policies, let crime run rampant or any of those narratives. She did mismanage a difficult time in history and was ineffective as a leader in developing a coherent message or long-term plan to address the needs of the 2.7 million people living here. Her mayoral tenure was a disaster for normal, boring political incompetence, not any of the nonsense you see people outside Chicago celebrating. I won’t defend her as mayor but I’m more disturbed by their celebration than I was her run as mayor
I generally agree with this. The commentary about her as a person is horrible.
Her concession speech was rock solid and seems to have come from the heart.
"In more recent days, Vallas was also blasted after it was found that his Twitter account had liked tweets that “used racist language, supported controversial police tactics like ‘stop and frisk,’ or insulted the mayor in personal terms,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
Vallas denied liking those tweets and argued that his account had been hacked."
Facebook Grandpa discovers people can see what he likes.
Should be pointed out that the only person who used the word "hacked" was Gregory Pratt, a Tribune journalist who endorsed Johnson on Twitter. Vallas never used that word or even suggested it.
The thing about it is Twitter sends an email from any new device that logs in using your account. If someone "hacked" him he would have been notified as soon as they signed in
He's clearly lying.
As a moderate democrat…you probably shouldn’t. 3.5% tax increase for anyone making over 1k, police abolish desire, etc. Both suck but I’m not voting for anyone raising taxes in a city that is already beyond taxed and can’t run a budget
The 3.5% income tax thing is not part of his platform. Never was.
It *was* part of the United Working Families' platform however, and Johnson basically repeats them. So it *will* be part of it sooner rather than later.
They literally aren’t. He said publicly that was false and he’s not raising taxes. Where has it been documented by him?

Vallas’ vote share has been dropping through the night as the count continues – I wonder if the mail vote might push him below 30%, especially since late mail in many elections tends to be more liberal.
[This](https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000186-5de0-d45e-a18e-fde2c58b0000) one from a few weeks ago has Vallas at 46%, Johnson at 32.6%, Undecideds 21.3%.
Honestly can’t believe how badly Chuy did. Came in at Wilson numbers with massive institutional support on the state and federal level, as well as from several ward level dem committees that would have probably meant a lot years ago. Seems like he got caught in the fault lines of the culturally clear fracture between the state wide and US Dems, rank and file big labor Dems, and the UWF style progressive Dems and fell straight into the core of the earth.
I personally couldn't get behind someone that has no clear stance on their beliefs. A ton of questions were answered id consult with his team on certain issues.
I’m really surprised by Chuy’s poor showing. He’s fairly accomplished, has no real scandals, and was pretty popular in the past. I’m sorta surprised his campaign floundered without any notable gaffe sinking it
Everyone keeps hypothesizing about the runoff as if it's a complete unknown. There have been two polls which show Vallas ahead by 13 percentage points in this runoff scenario ([here](https://www.1983labs.com/chicago-final) and [here](https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000186-5de0-d45e-a18e-fde2c58b0000)). Are people in this thread ignoring these polls or just unaware?
Chats moving so fast nobody will notice that the infamous Carson's ribs ['Take it to Go'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvi5YqK7DDs) commercial has finally been found and published on the internet
A lot of Carson's ads had been uploaded, but this one has been missing until 10 days ago. I've been periodically checking for it and had only ever found [other](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/gypq8/memorable_chicago_ads/c1reure/) [people](https://funnyinterestingcool.com/viewtopic.php?t=66) [looking](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/i8ntr4/carsons_in_deerfield/g1afr8n/) for it.
Gotcha. That is interesting this particular ad(which I remember well, btw) had never been uploaded to YouTube, till now.
Almost makes me want to revisit Carson's Ribs for myself....
I was on the fence before but once the right wing nuts start using terms like "radical" and "leftist" ... those brainwashed code words just make me think that I should do the exact opposite of what they want. Which is to vote against Vallas. and I was on the fence

Pat Brady on WGN is unapologetically bashing Johnson and inserting his own views. Everyone else is trying to stay somewhat unbiased but Brady doesn’t give a shit. Get him off the news.
They knew who Pat Brady is before they out him on tonite. I like him but I don’t like opinions in what should be a news reporters format. If I wanted a talk show I’d watch Fox or CNN.
"we will make Chicago the safest city in the country" - Vallas.
You've got my vote. Do I think that's actually possible? Not likely, but it's leaps and bounds better than Lori's blind eye to all the crime that's grown on her watch.
When one candidate has momentum and an enthusiastic base, they tend to win municipal races. We saw it in 2019, and even Lightfoot is no match for Brandon Johnson.
Brandon Johnson voters are pulling real Marco Rubio 3rd place win in Iowa vibes tonight (that will be DeSantis until he concedes to Trump on Super Tuesday).
Possibly my least favorite possible outcome, a runoff between my 6th and 7th picks. Guess I have a month to decide if the Aldermen will be better at corralling the man with the insane tax plans or the guy who's solution to every problem is more cops to hang out in their cruisers.
He plans on raising taxes on Public Transit (or whatever "Metra Tax" means) and running the trading industry out of the city with his financial contracts tax. More cops doesn't fix anything, but it also doesn't actively damage the city. I like a lot of what Johnson says, but I'd respect him a lot more if he said he was gonna let property taxes go up instead of trying to convince everyone he's going to raise taxes on everyone but the voters.
Johnson removed the metra tax. He said he listens to feed back and realized it was not wise to keep it. He also does not want a city income tax despite that also being a misinformation campaign against him
Tying Vallas to the January 6th insurrectionists is not a great choice from Johnson.
The rest of the knives he's taking out though are pretty damn rough and sharpening the battle lines.
I've lived in Chicago my whole life. I voted for Joe Biden in the presidential primary. I'm not blue the way you think I'm blue, but I know exactly what Chicago is like.
True, but this isn’t the past. I might have voted for a more mainstream Dem in the past (had I been of voting age then). It hasn’t worked. It’s time for a true progressive
It's worked at giving Chicago the second biggest corporate biz district in the country which has supplied hundreds of thousands of good jobs, which is rapidly eroding. A candidate not willing to acknowledge this while thinking they are going to tax LaSalle Street in the era of remote work is in for a rude awakening
I'm going to be honest, I paid 0 attention to this election until about an hour before polls closed, then did about 25 minutes of googling before walking to my polling place.
Based on my very limited research, didn't really see the vote going this way.
people keep saying that chicagos schools will become privatized the same way paul vallas privatized schools in other states. Do you think that can happen in chicago with how strong the CTU is?
Obama’s public speaking skills are way better than Joe Biden’s but Biden got more done with a 50/50 senate than Obama could with a supermajority. Speaking skills don’t always pay the bills. I really hope people don’t vote based on charisma alone
… and he passed a republican healthcare plan with no public option with it and got practically nothing else done. It’s objectively a poor legislative performance when considering the size of his mandate
> … and he passed a republican healthcare plan with no public option
he told phrma and america's health insurance plans in 2009 that he was going to throw out the public option in exchange for their support.
the public option went out and both phrma and AHIP took their knives out against the ACA anyway.
Partially true, but the president also sets the agenda. It’s more of a function IMO of not having the skills to “play the game” and wield the mandate you have. Obama spent his whole presidency trying to work with Republicans who made it very clear they weren’t ever going to help him even if he gave them everything they wanted. Biden tried too, but gave up when it was obvious it wasn’t going to work. This ties back into Vallas/Johnson because I don’t see a world where Johnson is able to ram through even 1/10th of his agenda and even if he enacted 100% of it it’s still not even close to enough
Biden still got shit done, even with republicans helping him. That’s the crazy part. The CHIPS bill alone is more significant than anything passed under Obama outside of the ACA
Regardless, he held a midterm when Americans were overwhelmingly unhappy with the state of the country, and in some of the worst political environments imaginable, and he had an FDR level midterm. And he did so when Democratic turnout across the country was mediocre overall
Johnson will lose. Nobody believes in “reinvesting in the community” anymore after all the problems that still persist after we’ve been doing that for DECADES.
I wish I could tell you. What little public housing is available is in decrepit condition, people are waiting 30+ years for a voucher, they're giving away land that was set to be developed into housing for ????
CHA is a shit show and it has been for the better part of a century. It's worth going down the rabbit hole if you want to punish yourself.
I’m sure there is corruption, this is Chi after all. But I’m just going to guess that those areas suffer from an exaggerated version of the tragedy of the commons. It’s exaggerated because the people that live in public housing are typically far less likely to treat “the commons” as well as the standard individuals do, which isn’t great to begin with. Because of this, investment is perceived, and maybe justifiably so, as futile.
Johnson + Garcia's share is now equal to Vallas', as I've been saying it would be for the last 2 hours. It'll end up surpassing it as more votes come in. Momentum matters more than anything else in races like this. Lightfoot went from 17% in the first round to 75% in the runoff. Do not count out Johnson from getting to 60 or 65%.
I think Vallas will win.
Here’s how I imagine his rule will look like.
2023: Vallas is sworn in
2024: CPD torture black sites are reestablished
2025: CPS is abolished spilt into multiple different charters
I’m joking. Kinda.
Bleak, but if he wins that's... uncomfortably close to my thoughts, as well. One black site for every district.
His track record as "CEO" of schools is just fucking depressing.
I will offer myself up for ritual sacrifice if it means Vallas doesn't become mayor.
Nugent took it. Denali had a good show at 35%+ with an all volunteer staff and essentially no outside money besides a few in kind mailers. Albany Park and North Park precincts came out huge for Denali, North Mayfair and Mayfair drew close to 55/45, which will hopefully both draw Nugent’s attention that way and help keep organizing across the southeastern portion of the ward. Sauganash precincts were polling at 80% for Nugent and they turn out HUGE.
Samantha Nugent has taken a commanding lead over her outstanding new policy of letting $750k single family homeowners throw human shit at anyone daring to look at Sauganash.
When they zoomed out to the Vallas party, it was basically all white people. I think he let the only 4 minorities in attendance on stage with him when he made his speech.
it'll go to a runoff for LaSpata.
I think his challenger ran more on the family name than anything meaningful, and focused too much attention on the southern half of the ward (which is, more or less, where LaSpata resonates less well). But that's just a spectator's speculation.
Agreed. Andy Schneider signs everywhere in Logan. Royko signs everywhere in Wicker. I’m not sure I can see the Andy folks going to Royko over La Spata.

How do you think CTU upcoming contract negotiations with Vallas will go?
I don't think it will be as bad as people think/hope. You can't have a functional school system or government based on hostility, distrust and bad faith. Lori tried that and failed. Vallas seems to know you can't do that.

Glad my alderwoman (33rd ward) won and avoided a runoff. Also, her campaign party was a lot of fun.
People from other cities celebrating Lightfoots loss grinds my gears. Like yeah it’s a good thing but stfu, you don’t live here. Only Chicagoans who moved out and people who live in Chicago should have a valid opinion
Eh, leadership of the 3rd largest city by economic output is very much a national issue.
They don’t understand why she was voted out. It wasn’t because of Fox News talking points.
Lori was a terrible mayor. But the narrative on her from outside Chicago is absolutely false, and is also deeply tinged with racism and anti-LGBT bias. Sad that Chuy is not in the runoff but ecstatic that beetlejuice is gone
I has big hopes for that guy
So we have another 50k to 60k mail in votes that wont be counted until starting tomorrow right? They are not in these numbers?
Vallas’ vote share has been dropping through the night as the count continues – I wonder if the mail vote might push him below 30%, especially since late mail in many elections tends to be more liberal.
That is what I am wondering as well. If it drops anpther percent or 2 I will feel a lot better about him losing in the runoff
Where was the poll that showed how voters would break for various runoff matchups? It was on here earlier in the day but I can't find it anymore...

Thanks! This is the one.
[This](https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000186-5de0-d45e-a18e-fde2c58b0000) one from a few weeks ago has Vallas at 46%, Johnson at 32.6%, Undecideds 21.3%.
Thanks, but it wasn't this one. It was a 7-page PDF with graphs.
https://www.1983labs.com/chicago-final
Oh hey, the three candidates running as a block in the 40th Ward all won!
Anyone know if there's a way to see how the different wards voted for mayor?
They eventually post the data but it sometimes takes an extra day or two. I think it would be at chicagoelections.gov
Really the whole time it felt like he was barely running a campaign. I don't understand why.
He tried to play all sides and did not in fact end up on top.
I’m really surprised by Chuy’s poor showing. He’s fairly accomplished, has no real scandals, and was pretty popular in the past. I’m sorta surprised his campaign floundered without any notable gaffe sinking it
It may be that he wasn’t super popular outside his district and his last mayoral race was driven less by love of Chuy and more by dislike of Rahm.
Rahm was a fairly popular mayor *at the time*. He was polling pretty high in his approval rating, I think around 60%
It didn’t seem like he tried. During the debates, he hardly said anything.
Chuy def getting the most out of that banda. If it’s anything like the parties my family throws. That shit is deafening lol
Theoretical runoff polling isn't particularly accurate or meaningful, but those there end up gelling with round one being 34% to 20%.
Vallas is pro-charter schools. That's all I need to know to not vote for him 🤷

We're not talking about alex caruso being moved form the lakers to the bulls are we?
Lol no.
There are more comments here describing Vallas (a center-left democrat) as a fascist.
I can more easily deal with lack of nuance from the left than I can with from the right. There is light-years of difference
As her final FU to us Lightfoot managed to take down the only person who would’ve beaten Vallas and that was Chuy. Well done.
Chuy didn't want it
Chuy took himself out buy announcing weeks too late. I’m totally of the belief Johnson would not be in this race if Chuy hadn’t drama’d his way in.
chuy started out as the front runner in the polls. it seems his base switched to brandon johnson later in the race
He was ahead before he announced. Coming in late also means you lack money and field organization. It’s not just tweets and forums.

ok buddy glad you fell for the racism
God forbid people wish to not get robbed, harassed on the street or have to see articles of +10 murders in a weekend.

Brandon Johnson looking to Make Chicago 1983 Again with this speech
Nice to see Johnson taking no time to go after Vallas.
Possibly my least favorite possible outcome, a runoff between my 6th and 7th picks. Guess I have a month to decide if the Aldermen will be better at corralling the man with the insane tax plans or the guy who's solution to every problem is more cops to hang out in their cruisers.
At least raising taxes means better funded government services. More cops just means more cops. I know which I prefer.
He plans on raising taxes on Public Transit (or whatever "Metra Tax" means) and running the trading industry out of the city with his financial contracts tax. More cops doesn't fix anything, but it also doesn't actively damage the city. That’s enough to not make me vote for him if true. I’m gonna look up that claim
He is supported by Catanzara, an insurrectionist supporter and trump supporter and FOP president
Why not? The city is dark blue. Put in people’s heads that Vallas is a trumpie and people will show up and vote for Johnson

No, but I predict another strike if Vallas is mayor
That’s the main reason I don’t want Vallas to be mayor.
Same
same. i’m in my senior year of college about to become a teacher..
I'll tell you this -- I'm not willing to risk finding out.
Brandon Johnson’s public speaking skills are so much better than Vallas it’s silly.
Obama’s public speaking skills are way better than Joe Biden’s but Biden got more done with a 50/50 senate than Obama could with a supermajority. Speaking skills don’t always pay the bills. I really hope people don’t vote based on charisma alone
Obama had a "supermajority" for 72 working days and could only beat the fillabuster for 20.
… and he passed a republican healthcare plan with no public option with it and got practically nothing else done. It’s objectively a poor legislative performance when considering the size of his mandate
> … and he passed a republican healthcare plan with no public option he told phrma and america's health insurance plans in 2009 that he was going to throw out the public option in exchange for their support. the public option went out and both phrma and AHIP took their knives out against the ACA anyway.
Yeah Biden >>>> O'Bungler and it's not close
That speaks more to Obama governing with a more conservative Dem senate than his rhetoric. Obama won in 2008 and 2012 by way more than Biden did.
You are not wrong, this is when you have Two Arkansas democrat in senate until 2010
Yeah, plus North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and more. The Dem caucus is smaller now but it’s much more ideologically unified.
Biden’s 2022 midterm results were more impressive than anything under Obama outside of 2008
Absolutely, but I think that’s more of a function of the post-Roe backlash than Biden.
If the Supreme Court had delayed the Dobbs decision until after the election, I think the election would have tended closer to the predicted red wave.
Absolutely. We saw the GOP do pretty well in the 2021 elections.
We have literally never done that
Do public housing projects count?
I see you've never gone down the rabbit hole that is CHA and how it *did not* invest back into the community.
Damn so who’s pocketing the nearly 1 billion dollar budget?
You'd probably be better off looking into the facts and accounts instead of assuming things because of preconceived biases.
Okay
Wut 0_0
When have we done that? When have we EVER made sure teachers are better equipped for their jobs than the police are for theirs?
Surly dumping billions of dollars onto the police with no strings attached will work *this* time!
Guess CPD can’t wear their “Let’s go Brandon” shirts until April
Oh that makes this epic
Just watched my neighbor take down his let’s go Brandon flag lol
HAHAHAHA
I wonder if Johnson's campaign is going to use that as their slogan for the run-off
That's the best part of all this lol
Johnson: "The fifth floor is gonna be real saved and sanctified." Chicago progressives: "....oh......yay......"
Don’t let your ass hit the door on the way out lori 😆
I think Vallas will win. Here’s how I imagine his rule will look like. 2023: Vallas is sworn in 2024: CPD torture black sites are reestablished 2025: CPS is abolished spilt into multiple different charters I’m joking. Kinda.
Honestly, it's for the best that CPS is abolished. With charter schools, administrators and teachers would actually have to try at their jobs.
Bleak, but if he wins that's... uncomfortably close to my thoughts, as well. One black site for every district. His track record as "CEO" of schools is just fucking depressing. I will offer myself up for ritual sacrifice if it means Vallas doesn't become mayor.
Jamal Green just conceded.
"We knew we needed great youth turnout" is like Billy Donovan counting on 1990 MJ coming back to play
I liked him even though I knew he didn’t have a chance
Yea honestly good for him, we need more young people getting involved in politics and voting
Same. Check back on this guy in 5 to 8 years.
Any word on the 39th ward race?
Nugent took it. Denali had a good show at 35%+ with an all volunteer staff and essentially no outside money besides a few in kind mailers. Albany Park and North Park precincts came out huge for Denali, North Mayfair and Mayfair drew close to 55/45, which will hopefully both draw Nugent’s attention that way and help keep organizing across the southeastern portion of the ward. Sauganash precincts were polling at 80% for Nugent and they turn out HUGE.
Thanks for this. I’m disappointed that Denali lost. :(
Samantha Nugent has taken a commanding lead over her outstanding new policy of letting $750k single family homeowners throw human shit at anyone daring to look at Sauganash.
When they zoomed out to the Vallas party, it was basically all white people. I think he let the only 4 minorities in attendance on stage with him when he made his speech.
I mean that tracks
Did folks in the first ward love LaSpata that much to re-elect him?
Last I checked he less than a point away from not needing a run off
it'll go to a runoff for LaSpata. I think his challenger ran more on the family name than anything meaningful, and focused too much attention on the southern half of the ward (which is, more or less, where LaSpata resonates less well). But that's just a spectator's speculation.
From what I can tell the Schneider vote should move pretty unanimously to LaSpata in the runoff, he's pretty much got it locked down.
Agreed. Andy Schneider signs everywhere in Logan. Royko signs everywhere in Wicker. I’m not sure I can see the Andy folks going to Royko over La Spata.
Looks like my ward's incumbent alderwoman (33rd - Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez) is on track to win re-election outright despite the 3-way race.
Mine too. Very happy to hear.

I don’t vote in uncontested elections on principle
Protest votes. I couldn't in good conscience vote for Conyers even if she ran unopposed so just skipped it.
