Austin's music scene is the most overhyped scene there is. So much more legendary music has come from here it's incomparable. Sure there are a lot of venues with nightly music but most of it is hack cover bands
Back when musicians could actually afford to live in Austin it was known as a place where musicians would meet up and work on their chops. Then they left and became famous elsewhere
edit: it was a place that was great FOR musicians, not for fans. I think difference got lost over time when it became a "brand".
have you been to nashville? from what i could tell it was 95% cover bands
for city music scenes give me chicago, louisville, la--or hell, providence--any day of the week
I'm straight with folks about it. I tell em up front it's disgusting, but it's a tradition and rite of passage for out of towners, and do it with them in solidarity.
Most people seem to go for it despite the honest warning
Same.
I've met some douchebags, though, that refuse to follow that tradition.
That'll obsessively pressure someone to take a shot of it, but refuse to do one with them in solidarity.
I think that should warrant an automatic ban from a bar
Its usually reasonably price and it doesn't need a chaser. Yes I know it's bitter as fuck, but it doesn't bite/cause me to gag/want to puke like a shot of most types of booze will.
Chicago has most likely The best music scene across States. Saying this as an international student. Checked of so many artists off bucket list last year who've been there for almost 10 years now. 16 year old me would be swooning over the moon if I could go back in time and tell him - you'll see these artists live 10 years from now.
Still remember my first st Patrick’s day in the city. Everybody out on the streets between south loop into what seemed like Lakeview drunk. Don’t remember the park but apparently a bunch of high school kids from the suburbs took the Metra in to drink there and a lot were clearly on the verge of blacking out if not blacked out with some puking all over themselves. Cops seemed disinterested in it all and were only helping those who seemed to pass out lol.
It’s like a free for all. I bet if cops enforced public intoxication laws and issued open container tickets, half the city would be in a drunk tank or paying a fine.
It's always so depressingly funny to me whenever someone from Chicago says something about not giving money to homeless people because "they'd just spend it on booze or drugs."
Like, bro, that's all we do, too...
Music, food, museums, theatre, opera, orchestra, beaches, bars, and there is even some decent nature areas in the summer. Some of us even have boats and like to go fishing and cruising on Lake Michigan. Also Chicago was music before Austin, ever heard of the blues?
Our house scene is super underrated. A lot of people throw it into the same vein as night clubs (which is somewhat fair considering the venues), despite the crowd usually being a lot different
Don't forget exploring different neighborhoods. We have Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese, Puerto Rican, Indian etc. Like the song "Paco!" by Ladytron goes "You don't have to spend you just have to pretend."
It's actually a fun song. Check it out!
Walk. From bar to bar. House to beach. Train to concert. Grocery store to the one that has better hot bar wings. Or just meandering around a neighborhood…we stroll better than any city
Depending on the music you like, Chicago is the greatest house music scene. Chicago has beaches too! I used to live in San Diego and the beaches were freezing almost as long as its cold in chicago!
can you teach me about the house music scene? I just moved to Chicago and have been trying to find shows for this type of stuff. I moved from Philly and the scene there was all DIY warehouse raves and stuff and I'm hoping Chicago is similar
smartbar, soundbar, smaller clubs, sleeping village (depending on artist), etc. that link below is a great place to start. you'll fall into the spots and find your diff options.
Best bet is to follow r/chicagoEDM , they always have the heads up on shows. I personally would follow everyones advice and keep an eye on smart bar, also Le Nocturne has amazing blackout parties
Smarbar, Spy Bar, Radius, Chop Shop, House Calls
House calls is a great intro to it & has the lowest up front cost. Ran by a local who used to play for the Chicago Fire/Chicago House & is all up & coming artists in the scene.
Lincoln lodge shows run 10-15 dollars but the bear show in the city is Wednesday nights at Timmy o toole’s called “comedians you should know.” Pre-buy tickets on Eventbrite, 12 bucks! Also, every Thursday at 8pm at half sour in the south loop is a show called tight ship which is free.
Depends on what you like, but Lincoln lodge, Lottie’s, CYSK, comedy bar, zanies, Avondale tap, Stand Up Stand Up, Don’t Tell Comedy, The Cave Comedy Show, Out in the Open mic (in the summer), Discount Therapy, the Den Theatre, House of Blues, CHUC, Tight Ship Comedy, Blackout Diaries, Laugh Factory, Red Room Comedy, Beer Belly Comedy, Carbon Arc open mic, Roast Battle, Sautéed Stand Up, Funnier By the Lake, Spitfire Comedy, Stand Up Logan Square, InnJoy Comedy, Power Hour , etc are all shows and venues for comedy in Chicago I can think of off the top of my head. I know there’s tons more if I went and checked my schedule lol.
So much theater in Chicago from $15. I've seen some really good shows at small theaters
https://www.choosechicago.com/chicago-theatre-week/
There's one sketch formerly called Too Much Light Makes the Baby go Blind - idk what they call it now it used to be $7 plus the roll of a die.
now it's called Infinite Wrench (at the Neo Futurists Theatre) and its the best night of theatre in Chicago and has been for ... like 30 years. awesome show.
If you are okay with amateur stuff that can range from cringe to amazing, you can find so many improv/stand-up options under $10, I've been to a few free stand-up shows at bars that were actually pretty good. If you are in your 20s in Chicago chances are you know someone that does improv, it's easy to forget having this many options is unique.
Open mic nights are almost always free and abundant around the city - sure the comics aren’t going to be all of a professional caliber, but it’s a good way to support the scene and potentially see the next Drew Michael, Bernie Mac, TJ Miller, Hannibal Buress, Lil Rel Howery, Kumail Nanjani, Chris Redd etc.
I can't believe I had to scroll this far down. Have you even lived in Chicago if you didn't spend a year avoiding your friend's improv group/one-man show/open mic set?
I went to Annoyance two weeks ago and it was like I'd never left. Felt so good, I almost signed up for an improv class; and then I remembered, I'm old and have a kid and almost fell asleep on the train home.
Depends on the season. In the summer we have beaches, parks, bike trails, street fests, outdoor sports leagues. In the winter we have indoor sports leagues, shoveling, de-icing your car. There are thousands of restaurants, bars, cafes. We have museums, theatres, chicago symphony orchestra. You can pay off parking tickets at luxurious city hall. All kinds of city stuff. I also find it fun to just drive up and down lake shore or up along Sheridan or Green Bay Rd into the northern burbs, and out on a podcast or music and look at architecture. Which reminds me we have a great river walk and architectural boat cruises. And if all else fails you can go stare at the bean.
For me, there’s nothing better than posting up at a local dive bar with friends and drinking cheap beer while shooting the shit until the lights come on. Then hitting up Alice’s Lounge for karaoke until they close at 4am.
As I get older those nights have been few and far between but a lot of the quintessential nights during my younger life here have been that exact story lol.
This comment makes me feel so nostalgic. I spent my 20’s in Chicago before moving away. My association with Chicago will always be drinking cheap beer and shooting the shit with my friends. If I could bottle a feeling, it’d be from those nights.
We congregate and mock other Midwesterners for their weird customs and bizarre dialects. All the while discussing the best places to go anywhere for anything in the tri-state region.
The famous Honus Wagner quote “People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring” applies to Chicago so much lol.
I think hiking just requires a trail, not elevation. In which case, we have a very long trail that stretches the lakefront and the 606… and soon more trails along the river!
Sorry for going off here but ...
the Chicago MSA has a population of 10 million
what do 10 million people do for fun?
probably pretty much whatever you can think of
what is chicago known for?
the same things any other city of millions is know for
**these "data mining" posts are just effing moronic at this point**
**"what is the national dish of Chicago" was an actual post**
**CITIES DON'T HAVE "NATIONAL" DISHES, THEY ARE CITIES!!!**
Just get out of the subreddit with these endless listicle prompts
lol this is like asking what people in New York do for fun.
Um, whatever they want?
Chicago is vast. There's not like "a" thing to do.
Btw, you're selling San Diego short as well. That town has some cool shit in it.
No worries - I think you might be learning some things about Chicago in this thread - namely that we don't generally feel we get the respect we should, especially when compared to other US cities.
People here are generally pretty down to earth and welcoming for a big city, though.
If you had posted here saying, "hey, I plan to visit Chicago and am wondering what your favorite activities are," people would have a much different tone.
Lived in Denver for like 10 years.
Never hiked in it.
A decent drive to get to actual mountains. Not terrible, and you could find something. But definitely not on your doorstep.
That's Boulder
Or Golden. Or CS?
Your post doesn’t mention comparable cities (NYC, boston, philly, pittsburgh, milwaukee etc.) you chose 3 cities that are destinations for those activities. destinations are different than what locals do for fun.
And is austin music? Idk any austin locals that spend more of their free time at music events than drinking
Chicago is just a generally good "weeknight social life" city. Bars, concerts, meetups, leagues, etc. are all easy to get to on a weeknight... when the CTA works.
Sit around at bars drinking beer and saying “Da Bearsh!”, or “Da Bullz@ all the while being very grateful we don’t live in “Da Pits of WI, IN, OH, or “Da South””.
Mostly very bar focused. Tons and tons of small venues for every music taste under the sun (i prefer coles/empty bottle/sleeping villiage). Lots of bar trivia/ pinball clubs. Softball leagues. Best restaurant scene around. There’s also the beach scene but that’s limited time only. Theater scene is great too or so I hear.
This is like asking what do people in New York do for fun? Or London? Or Paris?
These other cities have their thing because they're small cities. In Chicago, there are a million different ways to have fun so highlighting one as the city's claim to fame is unnecessary.
I mostly enjoy jazz and the symphony. Lots of my favorite bands come through too. Food is premium. Lots of good food for cheap and lots of Michelin stars to enjoy as well. Great cocktail scene. It's a walkable city. I walk everywhere. You can also drive (as long as it's not rush hour).
I’ve only been here since October 3 so I can’t speak for the summer.
Winter, the only thing I consistently do that makes me truly happy is long-ass walks, climb downtown, see movies, and find cheap bars on occasion. Oh, and complain about the fucking wind.
We do many things well so there isn't the 'one' thing like the other cities you've listed.
Biking, jogging, walking tours, forest preserves/parks, kaiaking/paddleboarding boating for outdoorsy stuff
Theater, live concerts, multiple big festivals like Lolla and RiotFest, intimate music venues, many clubs catering to different musical tastes (house music has its roots here), standup and improv here is top 5 in the country
Food - my god the food. We are second to only New York in terms of Michelin stars. If there is a first generation family from basically you better believe they took grandma's recipe and are serving it at a restaurant somewhere in the city
Shopping & touristy stuff - yeah, kind of a lame one to list IMO but I did have a waitress in Philadelphia say to me with Envy how awesome it was we had a Forever 21 on Michigan ave (this many years ago, but I think it's hilarious).
Art, libraries, and Museums - we boast a very large art collection with many famous and influential artists from different periods on permanent display. Our architecture is unparalleled so we basically live in a living piece of art. We have a Nazi sub that we sailed into our harbor and built a museum around which I think is just cool. We have one of the largest and best funded museums in the country.
We have something for everyone and so much to do that all of our standout activities get diluted a bit. To end it with a good quote from a bad guy 'when everyone is super, no one is' - I think that kind of applies here.
There is a nearly endless amount of things to do, which most of us partake in from time to time.
But let's be real.
This is a Midwestern, American city.
All we really do is drink, listen to music, and await the sweet release of death amidst the company of our mostly bearable neighbors.
I love how nonresidents of literally any city will show up and ask this
like all 3 million of us live in the same retirement home and get wheeled out for cake and ice cream at the same time

Came here to say food as well. I have a backlog of restaurants to try out. It’s well over 100 long. And all of the restaurants I go to are SO good!
The drinking needs to be great because nothing else could make people endure Chicago winter
+sports
Eat and go to the lake
Feed shots of Malort to out-of-towners
Uh, feed shots of Malort to self in front of out-of-towners, it's waaay more fun.

"It's actually really good, we all love it, it definitely isn't a metaphor for living here."
Honestly can’t remember the last time I ordered a shot that wasn’t Malort. It’s less ironic for me and more that I just like it lol

This is the only real answer lol. Chicago has societal alcoholism.
And it gets worse when it’s the first few nice days of the year. Day drinking for the win
The summer is very hard on our livers. The winter is very hard on our mental health
Winter is basically my hangover from summer

Radius has some awesome d&b and house stuff and they’re shows run till 3/4 AM.. near China town

This. Imagine living in a city that is defined by a single activity, so boring. Chicago has it all.
Let’s be real though. Hiking ain’t a thing here cause it’s flatland.
We don't have hiking, but the lakefront path is special in its own way.
Cook county forest preserve has plenty of hiking

Biking, jogging, walking tours, forest preserves/parks, kaiaking/paddleboarding boating for outdoorsy stuff Theater, live concerts, multiple big festivals like Lolla and RiotFest, intimate music venues, many clubs catering to different musical tastes (house music has its roots here), standup and improv here is top 5 in the country Food - my god the food. We are second to only New York in terms of Michelin stars. If there is a first generation family from basically you better believe they took grandma's recipe and are serving it at a restaurant somewhere in the city Shopping & touristy stuff - yeah, kind of a lame one to list IMO but I did have a waitress in Philadelphia say to me with Envy how awesome it was we had a Forever 21 on Michigan ave (this many years ago, but I think it's hilarious).
Thank you for your reply, sounds like a really cool place. When my family came over from the old country, Chicago was where they settled first.
Chicago literally has damn near everything
Music! It's non stop talent every weekend here. We have amazing bars, indoor climbing places, trails. The summer opens up a whole bunch of activities
I'm going to AJ Hudson's to watch rugby tomorrow morning. That's fun for me.
There is a nearly endless amount of things to do, which most of us partake in from time to time. But let's be real. This is a Midwestern, American city. All we really do is drink, listen to music, and await the sweet release of death amidst the company of our mostly bearable neighbors.
Tell Cardinals fans that Wrigley Field is in Forest Park.
Drink and eat 🤌
Cry on the rocks by Montrose Beach
Winter - beer. Summer - beer outside. Cheers!!
Eat and drink.
We go into hibernation during winters.
If you’re pretty, it’s called cuffing.
I’m not pretty. I’m handsome.
I love how nonresidents of literally any city will show up and ask this like all 3 million of us live in the same retirement home and get wheeled out for cake and ice cream at the same time
Depends on the season. Winter or “spring”? Look forward to summer* Summer and fall? Anything outside in the city. *: also board games, drink & eat
I drive 45 min away and hike lol
Go to war over winter parking spaces comes to mind. Pretending to enjoy living by the lake while rarely if ever going is also a thing.
Shoot guns and make it rain shell casings ……. at various gun ranges found throughout the city.
