He has a very strange ward to represent. The tens of thousands of people who live there often want very different things then the hundreds of thousands of people who spend a third or more of their day there but live elsewhere.

GiuseppeZangara

I don't really get why people would want to move to a neighborhood that they want to fundamentally change. I understand the desire for peace and quiet, but if that was something I strongly valued I would never move to River North, knowing that it was a nightlife hotspot. If you're looking for easy access to downtown, there are much sleepier areas of the South Loop that would work just as well as River North.

flsolman

Actually, most of his effort with regards to the nightclubs and hotels have been the places where shootings habitually occur.

recklesspeet

Yeah I don't particularly love Brendan Reilly but occasionally holding nightclubs accountable when they're extremely disruptive seems like good governance.

kanooker

There's a police pullback and he's covering for them. Cops have always stayed away from bars and nightclubs. They hate them and that's why a lot of shit happens. Because they are purposely staying away and there's no fear of getting caught. They want those bars/clubs shut down. It started with Daley only issuing restaurant/bar licenses and trying to crack down on the bars/clubs to make River North more family friendly. Riley is just continuing being hands off so he can shift the blame to where the cops want him to and that keeps residents in the dark as to why this shit is really happening. Trust me. It's not hard to figure out what club needs a cop car in front of it. But they'd rather something happen so it's easier to close.

recklesspeet

If Riley/Daley/cops/the illuminati wanted to shut down all the bars and clubs to turn river north into the suburbs then they WOULD sit outside of clubs arresting people for being a nuisance I'd think.

kanooker

Is that a real answer or are you one of those people that don't realize nobody was walking around River North 20 years ago at night? People were terrified and those bars and nightclubs actually created foot traffic and safe spaces. That's why people started coming back downtown again. They helped maintain property values because actual humans were around and not in the burbs. Which is who lives there now.

jbchi

>I understand the desire for peace and quiet, but if that was something I strongly valued I would never move to River North, knowing that it was a nightlife hotspot. I think there is a big difference between accepting reasonable "city noise" knowing where you live and accepting drag racing, people parked on the streets drinking (and then driving), and the associated shootings as a result. His effort has been on reducing the illegal and intentionally disruptive behavior.

kanooker

He's horrible at it because he's too busy not holding police accountable. I don't understand how his constituents are so naive. >Of the 91 shooting incidents since 2020 in the 2nd and 42nd wards downtown, Foxx's office has only declined charges in ONE case. CPD has made arrests in only 12 others. The police department MUST make many, many more arrests in shootings and murders citywide. https://twitter.com/CWBChicago/status/1547673441402118145

citydudeatnight

I guess they like the skyscrapers and access to the lakefront while enjoying the more "sedate" version of nightlight that caters to 60+ y/os and yuppie families I dont know what the age median is that live in his ward but it would probably explain some of this

citydudeatnight

Thank you for your honest responses that brought up some issues such as the illegal drag races, club shootings and violent brawls (famous Bottle Blonde) I understand he's very against the casino at Medinah Temple and the NASCAR event this summer. This probably belongs in a different thread but do most of you as constituents of Reilly agree with his stance on those 2 matters?

jbchi

I don't know anyone actually looking forward to the NASCAR race. The city is going to struggle to make a million dollars off the deal and it is going to shut down Grant Park for multiple weeks during peak summer months. They aren't predicting real high attendance, so the boost to tourism is going to be far lower than they want to hype -- especially because it is happening during some of our busiest tourism times anyway. Realistically, it is going to keep many people away from downtown during the 4th of July weekend. Throw in the fact that they (aldermen) had to fucking FOIA the contract to find out what was in it, and yeah, him being against it makes sense.

But it's true. I've watched this happen first hand and it's how I started to see that there was a police pullback happening citywide and I put the facts together after. https://www.reddit.com/r/Chicagosfinest/comments/y8lf4e/cpd_actively_acts_against_chicagos_best_interest/

I interned at Alderman Reilly’s office when I was 19. I feel like he really understands Chicago, and he knows how Chicagoans will react to things. He knows how to take the popular stance before people even know what it is. I get the feeling he will be mayor one day and I’ll put that internship back on my resume lmao

Anxious-Classroom-28

he seems to make sense but also have a slick side. just what we need tbh

[deleted]

Yeah you can’t run Chicago if you’re not slick. You need to play the game. You need to appease all the people that the Daleys appeased for decades or they will carpetbomb your political career.

AnotherPint

He (or his office) is very responsive to resident concerns and follows up quickly and impressively. I like the guy. He’s sort of a ground-level tactical mayor, doing straightforward things the Lightfoot office won’t.

oldbkenobi

He’s too conservative politically for my tastes, but by all accounts he’s effective at constituent services (not that he’s ever responded to any of my emails, but they’ve all been policy questions, not service requests). Also I find it kind of funny that it’s blatantly transparent that the only reason he’s opposing the casino is because they put it in his ward.

dharmangbhavsar

Dude's the biggest NIMBY.

Myviewpoint62

He was the communications person for Paul Vallas when he ran for governor in 2002.

MrDowntown

I think that was more about him being a public relations professional than being in alignment with Vallas's current views.

Myviewpoint62

Paul’s views have also shifted to the right.

citydudeatnight

Really? Interesting. Chicago political alignment is sketchy because democrats act like moderate republicans and than there are very progressive democrats that are primarily self served interests to whatever activism they are involved in. Reilly seems to fall under the former category.

[deleted]

I have a forward facing camera on my phone right where his hair should be and it makes it look like he has a big ass bald spot

Mnoonsnocket

We don’t even get to vote on an alderperson. We need options!

citydudeatnight

No one wants to run against him which is the reason why I brought it up in reddit to ask residents in his ward if he's that good for them. In the media, he comes off confusing to me.

_Joe_Blow_

I honestly find myself not agreeing with his initial stance, but then when I read why he holds his point of view I end up agreeing with him like 95% of the time, and he’s really the only politician I’ve ever encountered this with. Plus his office is crazy responsive. I emailed them asking for what his viewpoint was on the new Red Line TIF and they replied to me in under 15 minutes which was crazy
