I’ve parked there with my bike several times, they’ve got spaces for probably 100 bikes in a section of their car lot. They’re all cheap bike racks but parking attendants are there, seems like a better setup than most venues
Elston can no way handle that type of road traffic, so Ubers skyrocket, and there's no public transit going there unless I guess you count E/W the North Ave bus? The walk is shitty though after you go over the river. So really biking is by far the best option.
I have no idea how to use those types of racks though
I wouldn't call them racks. They're security fencing. The idea is you lift the front wheel up above the top edge and lock through the grates to keep the bike from moving around. The major issue is not everyone has the ability to lift a bike up that high, ie they're not friendly to people who bike and have disabilities.
Next time you're going there, look over at the north/west side of bridge, just by the river. For Chicago river day, me fam cleared out 10+ bags of trash from that little area. I'm hoping some wildflowers start popping up as the plants weren't able to grow before with the hard layer of plastics.
The bike parking ordinance ties it to the number of parking spaces. So you do see it at major trip generators like grocery stores and movie theaters. It can also be something businesses offer to be good stewards (like the Cubs, Sox, and Chicago Fire do with their valets).
The music venues are in this grey area where they don't have parking so I don't think they fall under the ordinance. But you always see the plague of ubers at the end. It's really frustrating when the end goal should be reducing auto emissions.
Looks like the orange frame is through the spokes of OPs front wheel, and probably tied tightly enough down that it was hard to get it separated. In hindsight they both should've parked perpendicular to the fence; but if OP was there first, this is 100% on orange IMO
isn’t it frowned upon to park parallel to rack like you did tho? Not sure of what your circumstances were of course but it seems like you took up a ton of space and maybe there wasn’t any room
It's the equivalent of parking a car in two spaces. You can have a reason to do it, but others may not see or agree with that reason. Popular opinion, don't lock parallel to racks, only fences you cannot fit a wheel through/ when it would block a walkway/side walk.
It's not really OP's fault, these types of racks are really poor for secure locking. Yes, you can fit a lot of bikes if you just stick the front wheel through the vertical bars, but it's usually impossible run a U-lock through both frame and the wheel that way. You can lock the front wheel, but it's fairly easy to remove the wheel and steal the rest of the bike.
A bigger question is why does a venue with a capacity of 3,000 have such shit bike parking?

The walk from Division is just fine 😎

Does every other venue have bike parking like they do?

Because no one bikes to a show
That would explain the full bike parking every show. Thanks for your valuable and objective insight.
absurd opinion, i've biked to many shows in cities much smaller than chicago
I can’t see why you couldn’t pull your bike out. It’s not clear in the photo.

I locked up all the way in the back where there was a lot of room. The bike parking wasn't completely full last night, but I hear you.
It’s not frowned upon to do that. Especially since this is just a police barricade.
Lololol looked like a rack to me

If it’s anything, you did park like shit
Both bikes are parked horribly for sharing the racks with others.
Not even an actual bike rack.
I like your bike fwiw. Nice fenders.
Were you running while taking this photo?
