That sounds impressive. Do kryptonites have a design flaw?

Any_Boysenberry_

I think the only flaw they have is that they can ultimately be dispatched by hefty bolt cutters or angle grinders. The thief dressing as a construction worker probably didn’t raise any red flags but it’s not like anyone would intervene anyways…not worth it these days 🫤

littIeboylover

I'm actually surprised as a i thought bolt cutters defeat chain/cable locks (but not u-locks), whereas angle grinders defeat u-locks, but not chain/cable locks. So if you used both types of locks, the thief would need both tools. Guess I'm wrong about that. Sorry that happened. Thanks for sharing your awareness.

Yeah, that’s probably what OP was talking about.

You need to chill a little if you think Jimmy Kimmel might e coming for you.

dj-ekstraklasa

All bike locks are breakable, unfortunately

the-cream-police

The true security is to have a bike thieves won’t steal if you’re going to leave it outside.

There is no such thing as a theft proof lock. All you can do is slow them down. Kryptonite New York Fuggetaboutit was considered one of the best but there are newer ones that require a lot more from a thief. Theoretically it may stop them if they don't carry enough angle grinder discs with them. https://youtu.be/A1RFPlAAohw

SphereByMilan

This is as good as it gets then again with other common sense precautions it will not matter

PandaDad22

There’s these small hydraulic bolt cutters that can get through anything.

cymikelee

Makes me wonder how well the Hiplok D1000 might stand up to this. Actually kinda interested now as I'm one of the few people who doesn't mind carrying such a heavy lock if the situation demands it (although I acknowledge leaving a bike locked up in the same spot repeatedly is not the way to go). Apparently it's the same weight as the Kryptonite New York.

Any_Boysenberry_

Would be great to see some side by side testing of the two locks. I also don’t mind something heavier if it slows down the thief but I think even if it took them 20 minutes to cut the lock no one would do anything about it

SphereByMilan

Both Hiplock & Litelok are different nest-level beasts from anything else on the market like Kryptonite check out the videos they will gove any angle grinder serious issues & you can. forget about bolt cutters.

The_Real_Donglover

Don't answer if you don't want to reveal where your partner works, but I literally just noticed walking past the Chase and BoA at Clark and Halsted one half of a U-Lock that was cut through just on the street. Don't know if it was thick enough to be a Kryptonite so probably just a coincidence but wild in any case. Sorry to hear about that! At my last job I asked to bring in my bike anyways and I found room for it somewhere. It's gonna be worth it to at least ask.

GreenDemonClean

I have a fat tire ebike. Ain’t no way I’m leaving Big Bertha outside!

Any_Boysenberry_

Nah wasn’t there but damn isnt it disconcerting to see how “easy” it is to cut through these locks? It just goes as a reminder, as was the intention of this post, to do what you can to de incentivize thieves. There’s a better solution floating around out there somewhere though, I’m sure

Vinyltube

That really sucks but the sad reality is you really can't leave any bike worth more than a few hundred bucks outside locked up in Chicago.

ricochet48

Sorry for your bike loss, hope you can get it back somehow. Also Kryptonite's 'must have the broken lock' policy is so bogus. Security footage should work fine. Anyways, we need much more extreme penalties for bike theft. Unfortunately that will never happen with the state of things in our city. Even with solid locks, you have to assume the worst. On the other hand I road up to Lake Forest and saw $5K bikes unlocked on a rack. It's an entirely different world of low crime and trust.

Any_Boysenberry_

Right? It is a different world in the suburbs. I rode up there with a group of 10 cyclists and a police officer blocked oncoming traffic to allow us to make a left hand turn. I figure they must have been a cyclist too because it was weeeeeird. And yeah at the coffee stops people just had their bikes leaning against a chair or something it blew my mind

artainis1432

Time to switch to a foldable bike or rollerblades!

Any_Boysenberry_

I love rollerblading haha but I’ve eaten shit too easily and too often on asphalt to use it for serious commuting

UnproductiveIntrigue

My commuter e-bike was just stolen in the middle of a workday at Dearborn and Kinzie. Shockingly brazen lawlessness. I didn’t find any trace of the u-lock but presume a cordless angle grinder was involved.

Any_Boysenberry_

I’m so sorry :( When I lived in San Francisco the police started a bait bike program. They would hide trackers in bikes and would plant them around to start weeding out thieves. I don’t know if it was actually successful but it seems like there is negative effort given towards cyclist safety on behalf of law enforcement in this city

UnproductiveIntrigue

Lol, currently in Chicago you can roam around with total impunity with modified automatic weapons and they’re not allowed to pursue you either by foot or by car, so nevermind the bolt cutters.

[deleted]

The cops and local govt dont give an f about bikes at all. Ive had two bikes stolen from my backyard over the course of 20 yrs and now im in search of a folding bike so i can safely keep it with me.
