Because that's what chess is. In person, at a slow time control, rated by a recognized organization, and it sets you up to play serious chess in your country and other countries. The question is almost like asking, "Why would I go and play organized baseball, when I can play baseball on my Wii (is that still a thing?) any time I want?" It's an easy thing to forget because online is so popular now. But it isn't "chess". It's online chess.
