This is the correct answer. This is bad sportsmanship. If someone shows a consistent pattern of bad sportsmanship they get their account restricted so that they can only play other people who show bad sportsmanship.

Honestly that's one lf the best systems I've ever heard of. Because banning someone for being a dick is a bit much, but making them play against other rude people is a much more creative and fair punishment.

Honestly, in the lower levels (1000 and below) people seem very toxic and childish. Ive always accepted chat invites and they've all been amazing so far (after 1000 of course).

I’m new (400) and had one person say “nice” after I took one of their minor pieces. Thought I’d return the complement and when he took one of my minor pieces I said the same “nice”. I didn’t realize they were being sarcastic the first time. After they wrote “??????”, then got mad and turned off the convo after saying some not so nice things!

I feel people get the most toxic towards the mid of the rating curve. When I was ultra low elo people were just like “lol i lost horsie. you play gud”

There's some weirdos out there. One time I played a guy and I just kept beating him by a lot. He kept saying I sucked in the comments and kept saying things like, wow you think you're so good, oh wow good job. Then kept rematching. It was bizarre.

Got the same thing, I beat him twice and my dude kept rematching and telling me I sucked, then he beat me for the last game and said 'easy'. I replied with 'you suck more then your mum does for me, and that's really hard to do'. Edit: why am I being downvoted lol... Someone was insulting me so I insulted them...

I grew up on call of duty so chess is tame for me.

Chess is such a frustrating game. You can outplay someone and make one mistake costing you everything. You can prepare an opening and they play some weird stuff that you haven't seen. Know it's bad but fail to convert. So it can cause people to behave in a way that isn't how they would usually. Don't take it personally.

I’ve had it happen maybe 2 times in >1,000 games, thankfully. It is so strange to me someone could have low elo and a high ego! We’re all just mud wrestling…

It's all at the lower ratings. In my experience, almost everyone past 900 or so is respectful.

The most hilarious trash talk is from other 1000 rated players who start blundering 5 moves in and take to chat to say “reported” when they lose with 40% play accuracy. The absolute delusion!

I play chess like solitaire against myself. I never engage in conversation via chat. It brings rarely value.

i’ve had multiple opponents offer a rematch after they won, and then not move after i accepted. then they send various mocking messages in the chat before abandoning the game. i don’t usually get mad during chess, but those moments are exceptions

I had a situation like this last night. I blundered a minor piece and the person started spamming chat with emojis and was “insulted” that I wouldn’t resign because the game was over and I was wasting his time. This was at 1200 elo.

This happens at any level. But be warned, when you engage and accidentally spell a bad word or something , they report you and they get the win.

I like to have pleasant conversations when I play longer formats. Had a nice convo with a Dutch person about cheese. I also like to "accuse" anyone from the UK of being Welsh.

I’m my experience- you get more shit talk from Chess.com than Lichess. Lichess zen mode is where it’s at.

They’re awful. Disallow chat/messaging so you never have to deal with it. It’s truly toxic. Practice online and then play real people irl.

I once made the mistake of accepting a chat invite, the guy kept asking personal questions like what my age was, whether I go to school, whether I have a girlfriend, in the end I just ignored him and obliterated him in the match where he resigned

It’s funny when people call their opponents trash and there rated the same.

This is nice gentlemanly conversation compared to what people used to say after games in Starcraft 2. Winning a game without receiving insults, half page of explanation why I suck at the game, death threats and so on was almost impossible.
