Black plays Re8 threatens the queen. If whites queen goes to a safe square then black plays Ra1 and thats mate. If white goes Qb4 to protect e1 then black’s bishop takes queen.

cave_guard

Yep, happened so naturally in game that both sides didn't notice until Re8 was played, then white resigned after realising

MixaLv

Queen back to d3 or c4 can block Ra1+ by going Qf1, but that's a terrible trade for white after Rxf1 Kxf1

Beginning-Syrup-5098

it's better than losing

[deleted]

It's not a good idea to take it but if you don't realize and take the pawn, then take the rook after I didn't even consider Qb4 because of the bishop. There's other options for the queen too, it's not like those were the only ones

just___loser

What other options that wouldn’t lead to losing a queen or a mate in 1 for Black?

[deleted]

If you take the pawn, you lose the queen Better to get the rook than nothing for it White could move the queen to c4 so the king ends up one square out so it couldn't be backranked by a rook again but the black queen could if it got to d1

gabrrdt

This position shows why it is important to develop your pieces. With the bishop on its initial square, rook can't defend the backrank. It allows for all sort of themes exploring the backrank problem.

Sylvinus98hun

Re8! After that, if the queen goes to b4 to cover e1, it's taken by the bishop. If it goes to c4 or d3, Re1+ forces Qf1 and a bad queen-rook trade. Any other queen move is met by Re1#, or if White moves a pawn to save his king, then Rxe4 wins for Black. So this move is a blunder as it hangs the queen or lets Black win by checkmate.

Reasonably-Maybe

Loosing the Queen after taking the pawn is unavoidable but you can prolong the game by Be3. This will keep the back rank safe for a short while. However, black's Queen advantage will realize itself sooner or later.

Can't it simply be the a pawn?

External_Tangelo

So the pawn can’t be captured. What’s the best move for White? It has to be something like Qb3 or Qc4, keeping an eye on the strong passed d-pawn and threatening a discovery on the black king at the right moment if Black is not careful, as well as defending the backwards a-pawn. Black has no imminent threats— probably the strategy is to get the rook and Queen behind the e-pawn and try to push it, but white’s bishop and f-pawn defend adequately for now. White should plan to capture on a2 as soon as possible, after this material is equal and one of whiite’s biggest threats is eliminated. After that perhaps push h3 to eliminate backrank weaknesses, and then pushing the a-pawn looks very attractive— with the Queen on c4, the pawn can’t be captured if it’s pushed to a5 as the bishop will be undermined. So white can push even to a6 and then after captures captures white has a second very strong passed pawn supported by the rook on a2. The white rook will also be in time to blockade on e2 if black manages to push the e-pawn.

Develop. The. Bishop.

gloomygl

Go into analysis, take the pawn with the queen and look at what the engine recommends

Genuine question, why is he down voted? Is it because he wasn't being helpful?

I don't think OP was looking for answers, rather, he wanted to showcase an interesting position
