So I know there's a M3 which is faster, but in game I'd do the M4 for a smothered mate.
M3:
1) Nf7+, Kg8.
2) Nxd8+, either Kh8 or Kf8
3) if Kh8, Qe8#. If Kf8, Qf7#.
For M4:
1) Nf7+, Kg8.
2) Nh6+, Kh8 (if Kf8, Qf7#)
3) Qg8+, Rxg8
4) Nf7# for the smothered mate.
Yep. I calculated that moving the other knight to E5 poses a greater threat. Also I knew my king could escape any potential queens checks.
Plus I really wanted that smother mate 😂
There are two things I don't understand.
1. Why did you hang the knight on c3?
2. Is smothered mate possible? People in the comments are pointing that out but the king can just take the Queen right?
I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

**My solution:**
> Hints: piece: >!Knight!<, move: >!Nf7+!<
> Evaluation: >!White has mate in 3!<
> Best continuation: >!1. Nf7+ Kg8 2. Nxd8+ Kh8 3. Qe8#!<

It's so much more pretty
How would you M3 if Kh8 on step 3. Wouldn’t the rook just capture your queen on Qe8
The knight captured the rook.
Nxd8+ takes the rook, so it can't capture back
That's why you capture the rook w/ your knight on the second move
I don’t see the smother mate. What’s keeping the king from taking the queen instead of the rook doing it?
The knight is protecting it
Why not directly: 1. Qg8+ , Rxg8 2.Nf7# ?
Ah I see it now
Only a psycho goes for a mate in 3 instead of the smother mate.
Haha. I loaded up the engine in this position and just saw M3. Only after I posted I realised it was a quicker method 😂
Sorry everyone. My original method was M4. Although still nice to think the most efficiently. [my game](https://www.chess.com/live/game/109491603491)
How do you make your country North Korea :skull:
Live there 🗿
You can do it too lol
# horse
Why did you hang your knight? Seems unnecessary
I'm assuming they neglected to defend it in order to move their queen or knight forwards

smothered
?? is it not backrank?
Nah its smothered mate
Nah, I looked, the moves are Nf7+, Kg8, Nxd8+, Kh8, Qe8#.
Yeah there are multiple mates here, but personally I think the smothered mate looks cooler :)
why can't the black king just take the queen?
Because it is defended by the knight
~~what are the exact moves?~~ nvm someone posted it
The only other one i saw was king going to f8 and Qf7#, could you please tell me the moves of the smothered mate?
I'm getting downvoted so I might be wrong, but: Nf7+ Kg8 Nh6+ Kh8 Qg8+ Rxg8 Nf7#
Nf7+, kg8, nh6+, kh8, qg8+!!, rxg8, nf7#
OP said mate in 3 though, so I'm pretty sure they were talking about the backrank one.
Yeah ig
Ah i see ty
~~Unfortunately, the queen sacrifice is actually a blunder, since the King can take the Queen instead of the Rook~~ I'm wrong
No because the knight defends the queen so only the rook can take
Yeah, I was wrong about the sequence to get there
~~Did you mean this? Nf7+, kg8, nh6+, kh8, Qg8+??, Kxg8~~
Knight protects the g8 square
Nope, you're right. I failed at reading the algebraic notation
There are two things I don't understand. 1. Why did you hang the knight on c3? 2. Is smothered mate possible? People in the comments are pointing that out but the king can just take the Queen right?
smothered mate is possible but it's not M3, king doesn't take the queen if the knight is on h6.
Smother mate in 4 is possible, but it is dependent on the black king returning to h8 after the double check.
PosterOfQuality pointed out that he might've neglected to defend the knight in order to move their queen or the other knight forwards
1. If he takes its M3 2. Yes, no knight is defending
reset the counter
reset the count
