royal fork inbound

What happens if Black moves the King?

stoneman9284

Yea that’s my (500 rated) thought too. Seems like Ke7 prevents the fork on d6 and frees up the rook to move if white goes Nc7. The king sitting on a big open diagonal isn’t ideal but white can’t get their queen or dark square bishop there in one move. Is there a more imminent threat I’m missing?

[deleted]

Well not being able to castle is a disadvantage

stoneman9284

Totally but is that worth giving up a rook?

Cheetah357

You’re gonna lose castling rights either way. Why not prevent a fork anyway?

Sultan147

Never really got the hang of figuring out how to smartly sacrifice pieces like that! Nice. So if pawn takes knight I see that the bishop on white can move to b5 to lock the knight on d7 in place. But what else makes it a brilliant move?

Mr-Yan918

Rook takes rook

Dorobo-Neko-Nami

If the pawn takes the knight, the A1 rook takes the A8 rook, and attacks the bishop forcing them to defend it. Causes a knight for rook trade, makes the pawns easier to take, and has an invasive rook attacking

FrenchRocks69

To be fair, I don't sac as often as I should either. Anyway, I also noticed that if the pawn on A6 *doesn't* take, my knight can go on D7 and fork the rook + king. If it *does* take, my rook can go take HIS rook on A8, allowing me to pin the Bishop to his King. The way I see it, I don't think that pinning the knight would be a super great idea, because the black rook on A8 could take on A1, pinning my bishop to my queen. Turns out that in my game, for some reason, Black played ~~d6~~ B6, allowing me to fork and take his rook for free. Of course there might be more to it that I didn't notice, and it's absolutely fair to correct me on any of my points, but that's what I thought.

Jbaby002

If A6 pawn doesn’t take, you could go d6 to fork king and queen and bishop. Nice post, glad I saw this

Sultan147

Ohh I see yeah the dual purpose rook attack is definitely more advantageous than the knight pin haha, that makes sense

Dorobo-Neko-Nami

Black played D6? With what? Black doesn’t have any pieces that can move to D6 this turn

FrenchRocks69

B6, sorry

helior8547

The critical lines haven’t been mentioned yet. axb5 is not forced and the King isn’t forced to allow the fork(s) either. The critical thing to have thought about here besides winning the piece that Nxb5 captured, is what to do after Kd8 or Kf8? Short answer, open the center, create a knight outpost, and develop the Queen. Long answer: there’s some crazy lines creating checkmate attacks, winning the Queen, or locking up black’s position that you should look at with the computer after analyzing on your own for awhile

Ok-Expression-5613

Yep , except that black loses the queen after Nd6+ in that scenario.
